Muir beat Newton Tech 42-21 in the Eastern Cape on Saturday with flyhalf Shane Gates scoring three tries.

According to The Herald newspaper, Gates was in a class of his own, and also kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Muir’s other tries came from centres Liam Oldham and Lisa Mbanzi, wing Neo Mehlwana and prop Marzuq Baarman, while scrumhalf Lulama Mkwakwi added a conversion.

When Gates left the field 10 minutes before the end through injury, Newton Tech scored two tries by lock Denzil Lindoor and prop Asanda Modise to add to a first-half try by prop Jacques Marupen. Fullback Lorenzo Baatjies converted all three tries.
