Southern boys get revenge
27 Apr 2010
Paarl Boys upset Affies with a 13-8 win on the second and final day of the Wildeklawer SuperSchools on Monday.
On day one last Saturday, Paarl Boys were the only Cape school to achieve a win as the northern schools dominated. However, day two saw Paarl Boys, Paul Roos and Paarl Gym triumph as they picked up big wins against hosts Affies, EG Jansen and Monument respectively.
Affies, who beat Paul Roos in the first round, are the No 1 ranked school and were expected to continue their good form against Boishaai. However, Paarl Boys came back from a 8-3 first half deficit to win 13-8.
Wing Lionel Abrahams scored Paarl Boys’ try while other wing Devon Williams kicked the conversion. Johan Cilliers sealed the win with a penalty.
Paul Roos made up for the first round defeat with a 37-29 win over EG Jansen. The Stellenbosch school scored six tries to EG Janen’s four as flyhalf Darren Sherrat, wing Gideon Meiring, centre Thsothso Mbovane, prop Steven Kitshoff, wing Kyle Lombard and fullback Craig Barry all crossed the chalk.
Paarl Gym won their first match with a convincing 30-16 win against Monument.
Gimmies scored five tries in their victory as wing Conrad Loubser grabbed a brace while scrumhalf Willie Viljoen and centres Christopher Bosch and Ryan Stemmet also touched down.
The points difference could have been higher as flyhalf Lance Ruthford had a poor outing with the boot as he only kicked one conversion and a penalty. Monnas centre Ruan Steenkamp scored his team’s only try.
In other results, Glenwood, Grey College, Boland Landbou, Waterkloof and the Wildeklawer Barbarians also picked up wins against Diamantveld (17-5), Outeniqua (45-6), HTS Middelburg (20-11) Framesby (53-10) and Pretoria Boys (13-12) respectively.
