Treu to aid Mjekevu

Treu to aid Mjekevu

Lions wing Wandile Mjekevu will train with the Springbok Sevens side in an attempt to sharpen his finishing skills.

Lions coach Dick Muir has asked Sevens coach Paul Treu to take Mjekevu into the camp, although the winger won’t be considered for the Bok Sevens team. Muir wants Treu to help with aspects such as decision making, communication and running off the ball.

The 19-year-old will miss the last three Super 14 matches and is also not available for the last two tournaments of the Sevens Series. He will be with the SA U20 side for the World Championships in Argentina at the time.

To go to a national team as a “finishing school”? Is there nothing lower down for that?

Those who knows rugby realized along time ago the value of sevens rugby to develop certain type of player and more specific wingers. Gio Aplon is a good example.

A point of interest. Gerhard vd Heever has also spent some time with sevens rugby. By this time he proved he is a good finisher..

The lowest kind of people is those who denies youngsters the opportunity to develop.

Put him on The Ricky Januarie Diet. He needs to gain a few and man-up as well!

Good move for the youngster. I’ve noticed that his decision-making is not very good (understandable in light of having converted to the wing from centre and bearing in mind his age) and he will surely learn some important skills. Well done to the Lions.

@thetackler: what is it to you, why worry? Israel Dagg, Victor Vito, Scott Higginbotham, Robert Ebersohn, Gio Aplon: all have sevens experience that has made them better players…

worry about your adopted nation’s players rather than what the south africans are doing…

    where is henno mentz?

    @Transformation(Transformation):
I watched Henno play for the Lions Vodacom Cup team last week. I really think this guy got a raw deal. Granted the competition isn’t much but I think they could have done with them out on the wing in the Super 14. Chavangha, Mjekevu and Pikeur all bring pace to the equation but none of the power that Henno does. Pity.

I wonder what happened to Trompie Nontshinga. The Cheetahs loaned him to the lions at the beginning of the season and I saw him play in a pre-season friendly and now he’s not even in the Lions Vodacom Cup team. Trompie and Henno on the wings (with Tondie on the bench) would have done the Lions a world of good out wide.

@cyborg: #13 oh no…henno was one of the better lions players last season, i still remember the tries he scored against the Reds (i think), quite unfortunate!

aaaah Treu is going to help the young Lion with his passing game and make him a better player – oh it is true!

    Agreed, well said!
7 is an important tool for players and should be part of player development.
South Africas second best fetcher Mpho Mbiyso is a great sevens player but as a forward this might be a label hard to shake.
