Keo.co.za looks at the South Africans who featured in European club action this weekend.

The northern hemisphere club action was all focused on the European Cup semis this weekend, with many South Africans influential.

Biarritz defeated Jean de Villiers‘s Munster 18-7, but the Bok centre set up their only try as his break handed his side the momentum. For the French side, Eduard Coetzee started at loosehead ahead of French strongman Fabien Barcella, who is returning from injury. Former Lions lock Trevor Hall started and played for 67 minutes as his industrious work was vital in setting up the win.

In Toulouse’s 26-16 victory over Leinster, Daan Human – who has reportedly been approached by SA Rugby for the Boks’ Test against Wales on 5 June – delivered a strong scrummaging performance at loosehead. Human gave Stan Wright a torrid time, while CJ van der Linde was used as a substitute and also struggled at scrum-time for Leinster.

Shaun Sowerby also started for the victors, and while he made a few mistakes, he was a composed figure and France No 8 Louis Picamoles only replaced him after 72 minutes.

    daan human is 34….i wonder if he may not want a last fling at the stormers…..we could do with the depth.

    CJ…the bulls await….

    @grant10(grant10)-2: Will only shape on his home ground, he was killed yesterday

    I told you this before, Daan Human will only be fit to play a couple of games, unless they manage him like Os was managed

    You hold to the props you got and you give them time and hard work in a gym

  • 4.pepinillo: Reply to this comment

    Daan Human is better at scrum than OS !!!! let´s play this Oak 60 minutes and then release the Beast for the final 20 minutes…

    @pepinillo(pepinillo)-4: Have you been frozen for the last 20 years???? Don’t make stupid statements like that, it shows you know absolutely zip about rugby. Daan has done quite well over there but I am farking impressed with him gooiing the Frog-language! If you haven’t heard Daan, check him out on the y o u tube and type in stade toulousain – daan human

    2 other interesting pops….Pat Barnard former stormers who is playing in Brive and Edward Cotzee former Sharks who play for Biarritz

  • 7.JL1: Reply to this comment

    @pepinillo(pepinillo)-6: Jake White tried to get Pat back, but Pat wanted to play for England. At one stage he was in their Academy until he got a nice pay packet form the French

    Yes home time for JdV but who will he sign for?

    He seems surplus to the Stormers requirements.
    The Sharks could use a No 12

  • 9.Greenfever: Reply to this comment

    Daan is a good scrummer, but not the future. Not worth investing in sorry to say. Let him earn his euros.

  • 10.Heavens Game: Reply to this comment

    And none of CJ or Daan are in the same league as Smitty.

    You kidding….surely?

  • 14.Heavens Game: Reply to this comment

    @grant10(grant10)-13: 1 or the other has strengths that are better (but not by far) than Smit eg. CJ in the loose, Daan at tight – but all round Smitty trmps them both – add the leadership ability and he is another level.

    Obviously you disagree…

    I don’t want to fight tonight – letting you enjoy your Stormers victory, so am trying very hard to be nice…

  • 15.grant10: Reply to this comment

    @Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-14: well you know i disagree…..at 2 he is better than most…..in fact i just voted for the great mythical leader on the keo poll….but at 1 or 3 i just dont believe….at international level….boks can afford to gamble.

    I know you and the great squirrel hunter …aka rangergirl….like to throw the win ratios at me….but hell we won with poor scrumming….at times downright embarressing…..

    anyway….we go to war next week….may the best team win and all that…i am sure the blog will be good value in the build up…..nite HG…

    outta here

    @grant10(grant10)-15: Good man and sleep in the comfortable knowledge that Smitty will lead the Boks in 2011 WC (injury permitting, of course). He will probably lead them out against the French in the final. Assuming he will win it again is a bit arrogant…so will not suggest that step too far, but lead them he will.

    ‘ Human gave Stan Wright a torrid time, while CJ van der Linde was used a substitute on the other side of the scrum for Leinster.’ – did the reporter watch the game? Human gave Stan Wright a torrid time, but Healy was taken off after 25min, Wright moved to loosehead and CJ played tighthead, opposite Human. And got drilled, so much so, CJ got taken off in second half.

    Guys you may be interested by what was written by Stephen Jones in today’s London Sunday Times….

    “So Leinster became yet another champion of Europe to discover that to win the title in the first place is kids’ stuff compared to the task of retaining it. They have not quite improved enough this season to make up for the fact that the whole continent was after them.

    They were also playing off a feeble platform. They have fallen victim to what is known as Os du Randt syndrome — in other words, believing that just because you are large, balding and South African you must be a good prop. Leinster’s South African, C J van der Linde, struggled horribly up front, as most South African props tend to do outside their country and his arrival as replacement did nothing to bail out Leinster’s overpowered starters.”

    @XV(XV)-19:

    Yeah, he was drilled by another Saffa who had more hair, in Daan Human. Maybe it’s the hair as with Samson?

  • 21.Partizan: Reply to this comment

    Old Stephen Jonesie fails to mention the other prop was a Saffa. I hope our second Bokke (meaning Deysel/the overseas guys) including Daan Human play Wales the Welsh get a pakslae of note. Jones is a old man fool. Can’t ever teach and old dog new tricks

    @Big Hit(Big Hit)-17: CJ VD Linde…if possible and available.

    Otherwise blood W Kruger or Brock Harris.

    Not Smit!

    ja….about time we caught a huge wake up ….our scrums are unacceptably poor here. Check the Munster comments after the loss….all complaining about there scrums as well…..we cannot continue to gamble in this area….it will hurt us ….need to fix that scrum bokke!

    @grant10(grant10)-12:

    Yeah I heard something too and I know its JdVs 1st preference.
    But another question – Is it best for the Stormers?
    They have a good 12 right now?

    Surely it will be expensive relative to their need?

    The Stormers don’t really have any major weaknesses anymore. (Backup tighthead maybe)

    It’s amazing how many good players SA has lost over the recent years. And not all past their prime either. The funny part is many of them were dismissed as useless by the likes of gwantie10 when they played in SA. Now they are being hailed as possible saviours by the same muppets!

    in the heat of the game i was too caught up to really analyse the refs role closely to be honest….

    seems he was lenient to stormers>?

    But hell after suffering at his hands for a decade he owed us a fair rap!

    Daan Human was not good enough before he left, so was Pat Barnard and Edouard Cotzee, but the french league top 14 is the world toughest league when it come to scrums and best practise because like in Argentina, scrum is part of french cultural and pride.

    Bring back Human….he is no older than Os Durandt was in 2009. Bring also back Barnard,BJ ,CJ and Coetzee, try them for some games in 2010 and then judge them. And keep Beast as impact player PLEASE !!!!!!!!

  • 36.grant10: Reply to this comment

    @pepinillo(pepinillo)-35: you make good sense …..if boks can choose a real powerhouse scrumming unit i believe we will beat anyone….anywhere.

    Its our poor selections that put us under pressure and will result in us losing our wc crown…..we certainly have the available talent….at home and in europe.

  • 37.stand-off: Reply to this comment

    In Europe and NZ conditions the Boks don’t need mobile props. We need powerhouse props to dominate the scrums. How about 1. Human, 2. Smit and 3. BJ to start?

  • 38.pepinillo: Reply to this comment

    It´s to late to blood youngsters like Kruger, Harris for WC 2011 and WC will be won by a team with strong forward, good defense and a good goal kicker just like England in 2003 and Boks in 2007. Forget about super 14 and 8 tris per games….world cup is always going back to the base !!!!!

    Boks have one weak point…THE SCRUM, SO LET´´S TACKLE IT AND LET´S TRY ALL PROPS available including the overseas ones Human,Barnard,BJ ,CJ, Coetzee and Rautenbach.

  • 40.gecko: Reply to this comment

    @31 Barritt has already played for England A so he can’t play for Boks. In fact England taking squad of 40 on tour so he will probably feature in that.

  • 41.Big Hit: Reply to this comment

    @grant10(grant10)-22: CJ is being heavily criticised up here, if he is the answer he needs to get some form together. Kruger has been dominated too many times. Brok Harris it is?

  • 42.grant10: Reply to this comment

    @Big Hit(Big Hit)-41: hi BH

    yes….maybe time to blood Brock and / or Werner Kruger.

    Smits neck injury is a warning sign….and check the scrums once smit was moved to 3 against bulls….it wasnt pretty.
