Slick Tahs bury Canes

Slick Tahs bury Canes

The Waratahs produced their best performance of the competition to beat the Hurricanes 32-16 and book their spot in the play-offs.

The Tahs took to the field in a jersey that probably matches the wallpaper in Phil Waugh’s bathroom. Perhaps the jersey designers felt not enough people knew exactly what a Waratah was, or perhaps the coaches wanted to distract the Canes with a design so bad it put Stade Francais’ atrocity to shame.

The official line is that the Tahs donned the strip for charity, and they seemed to thrive in the new colours, hammering the Canes up front and scoring some spectacular tries thanks to their sublime support play. The wet conditions should have prescribed a tighter approach, but the Tahs’ tendency to look for the offload had the Canes’ defence scrambling.

The hosts went into this crucial match without their star scrummager, Benn Robinson, and were dealt a further blow when Dan Palmer cried off with injury in the 11th minute. Unfortunately for the Canes, they also lost captain Andrew Hore early on, a loss that seemed to have a greater impact on their scrumming prowess.

The Tahs bossed this set-piece and piled on the pressure through a relentless forward assault on the Canes’ line. The Kiwis were able to withstand the forward barrage and even managed to snaffle a couple of timely turnovers on their own line. But it was when the Tahs ran it from deep that the visitors struggled to get back on defence.

Great offloading complemented penetrative supporting lines until Kurtley Beale received the final pass to dot down. Lachie Turner then created something from nothing, chipping behind the Canes’ defence, collecting the ball, and sprinting upfield. The pass at pace was accurate as Drew Mitchell took the score to 18-6.

Piri Weepu managed to goal a penalty before the break, but the Tahs struck decisively after half-time. Having absorbed plenty of punishment in the first stanza, the Canes defence was lethargic and allowed Mitchell to cut the line. The Wallabies winger found Rob Horne in support and was on hand when the Tahs centre delivered the final offload.

The try and subsequent conversion took the Tahs to a 25-9 lead, and the way the hosts were firing, a Canes fightback seemed unlikely. The hosts had the better of possession and were winning the collisions, a battle that was made easier thanks to the tiring Canes defence.

Another chip over the top eluded a seemingly well-placed Cory Jane as Beale collected his own kick to score. The bounce of the ball was favouring the Aussies, and the try ensured they claimed a bonus point.

The Canes played themselves into the Tahs’ 22, but their desperation was exacerbated by elementary handling errors. Jane knocked the ball over the tryline, and while you could say that the slippery conditions were responsible, the Tahs were getting all their passes away despite the wet.

Turner was sin-binned in the 67th minute but the Canes failed to make the most of their numbers advantage. They spilled a pass from the resulting penalty and then butchered another opportunity when they ran it from deep. The Tahs defended spiritedly, but eventually conceded a try to David Smith.

The Sydney side has played some uninspiring rugby to date, but this performance confirmed why many teams consider them a threat. Their pack is difficult to stop once it gets going, and when they string a couple of passes together, ala the Crusaders, they can translate pressure into points.

They’ll continue to whinge following this win, as the five-point return takes them to second position on the log. Had the Bulls sent their first-string to Newlands and beaten the Stormers, the Tahs would have hosted a play-off.

The Stormers should beat the Bulls B team on Saturday to book a home semi-final, a result that will see Waugh’s charges traveling from Sydney to take on an intimidating outfit in Cape Town. The other play-off should see the Bulls hosting the Crusaders.

Canes to leak plenty of tries, but score even more. That’s the way they roll.

So 4 tries to both sides I can imagine without too much difficulty. It’s the 6 point winning margin that might be a tight call, I reckon.

Unless a miracle happens the Bulls will face the toughest play off games.

    Meaning either Crusaders or Stormers.

I categorise the Stormers as a tough play off game because they won’t have to travel and will have more local support than the NZ teams.

There is no way that Saders will beat Bulls next week. It is quite simple that they have still have jet lag and next week they have to fly to Gauteng again! Same happen last year to Chiefs and Bulls murder them in final. After Stormers beat Saders with about 30 points Bulls was relaxed last week, that is not going to happen next week.

I’m a bit afraif for my Stormers against Tahs next week. Earlier in this year Tahs was the best in first 20 minutes but after that Stormers had seen more ball and I thought they was only marginally better at the end.

Another thing is that was the second spear tackle by hurdles in the match, the first one was after 3 minutes and nothing happened.

Agreed- nothing else should concern them other than a win.

And I reckon it’s going to be alot closer than most here think. The Stormers should have too much firepower, but as we saw against the Sharks, if you rattle them in these high-pressure must win situations, they haven’t tended to respond well.

A side-effect of not having won anything for a while. They need to learn to win the big games.

@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-109: No you see that’s where I disagree. you cannot say objectivley that the second placed side in the comp with the best defensive record in history in this comp, and the greatest losing margin of 6 points the whole season is likely to lose at home against a team that has not played together before and without 13 of their front line players. No one has that sort of depth, then you may as well say that the Bulls are the best and second best teams in the comp. (NOOOOOO, that wasn’t an invitation to start)

Ah- but you see, they don’t see it as windgat. They have this pleasant little idea that because their team has won the Super 14, they come from some position of authority on the matter.

The fact that their team has had so much success, automatically means that they know more about the game than anyone else and should you question them, well…

Us peons should know our place.

But soon enough, they will learn that when your team is at the top, the fall is much harder when they do inevitably fail one day.

And then, much like in 2008, the rugby fundi’s from the north will go very quiet.

    Crickets quiet.

We have something left to prove but we have had a great season and will contest the semi finals. Where remains to be seen, but I will predict that it will be at newlands, with the finals either in Orlando, or at Newlands against the ‘Saders.

@poppa69(poppa69)-212: law of averages means it was bound to happen Poppa, but the tough thing is the travel factor for the Saders, have to travel home, then then back to SA, if anyone says that wont be a factor they are dreaming, if the stormers win tomorrow they will have to be very weary of the Tah’s because the way they defended and countered in the 2nd half was pretty impressive, but then again the Cane’s didn’t pitch today at all, so one can’t really make an accurate assessment.

  • 226.BlueBlood: Reply to this comment

@Martin(Martin)-218: slightly yes, but this year has been a very tough competition. its an achievement to be in 2010 semis, it really is.

I almost wish that they would put the S15 off for another year, just to take in another year of S14 brutality. This is a special competition this. It has everything.

The Stormers, Crusaders and Waratahs did well.

I think semis will be Bulls vs Saders with a Bulls win, I dont think the Saders can put off the effects of all that travel forever. Then Stormers Waratahs, with a Stormers win. The Stormers team is a totally different outfit without Puke in there dividing everyone.

Bulls vs Stormers final is a dream come true. I would not even fantasize about daydreaming about trying to predict an outcome there.

I must say, the permutations are raelly in our favourat the moment. We either have a home semi, or we travel to Orlando, which is certainly better than going to Sydney or Christchurch.

I’d obviously prefer to see the ‘Saders in the final, mostly as it means a home final at Newlands, but If I was really dreaming, my ideal would have been Bulls/Stormers at Newlands.

And we had the chances to make that happen, against the Brumbies, the Reds and the Force. Less than 3 points all, but a miss is as good as mile, and I think that after the weekend the log will be an accurate reflection of the teams’ respective performances this year, with us either 2nd or 4th. And deserving of the log position either way.

  • 246.Kea-Cat: Reply to this comment

@poppa69(poppa69)-238: Well the Stormers deserve to be in the semi’s. Now previous performances mean twot, it’s test rugby time, play for the win even if you’re outscored 4 tries to nil.
One thing about the top 4 is the Stormers are competing against experienced teams.

had a look at the draw for the semi’s, bulls at 5pm on the 22nd, Stuart Dickinson the ref, then the second semi at 7pm, Mark Lawrence is the ref? then Joubert to ref the final? surely they should only decide on the ref after the final log positions are decided?

  • 249.Xkreni-WP: Reply to this comment

Bulls can sit back and relax. Briesies must still win tomorrow and they are not the biggest on bmt. Choked more than Linda Lovelace or the AB’s in WC in recent years.

    Some stats:

    1. On average, Super 14 teams win 63% of their home matches, and only 37% of their away matches (i.e. teams are almost twice as likely to win at home than away).

    2. 63.8% of yellow cards are awarded to visiting teams, and 36.2% to home teams (you are twice as likely to get carded playing away).

    3. On average, away teams concede 14.8% more penalties than home teams.

    4. SA teams concede 11.8% more penalties in New Zealand and 13.9% more penalties in Australia than they do at home.

    5. NZ teams concede 13.9% more penalties in SA and 11.5% more penalties in Australia than they do at home.

    6. Australian teams concede 12.6% more penalties in SA and 10.8% more penalties in New Zealand than they do at home.

CONCLUSION: Home ground advantage is very significant indeed. The statistics also seem to back up the idea that referees are under pressure to please the home crowd – the advantage is quantified as almost 15% more penalties being awarded against away sides, and double the number of yellow cards.

    @Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-288: “And Saders always need a Kiwi one…”

    Loud cry. Let’s examine that.

Saders did not lose 8 games from 13. In those 8 games they had

32 – 17 vs Highlanders DERBY (win was expected) Kiwi ref
35 – 6 vs Sharks (absolutely desrved whipping) Kiwi ref
33-20 vs Blues DERBY (very decent performance) Kiwi ref
23-16 vs Chiefs DERBY (deserved winners) SAFFA ref
46-19 vs Lions (any doubts?) Kiwi ref
26 – 26 vs Hurricanes (yes, referee’s blunder) and who the ref was? SAFFA Kaplan. ;)
20 – 13 vs Waratahs (again, deserved winners) SAFFA ref
45-6 vs Cheetahs (any doubts again?) Kiwi ref
40-22 vs Brumbies (again, any doubts?) Kiwi ref

    as for the losses

20-41 vs Reds (again well deserved loss) SAFFA ref
16-24 vs Force (ditto) SAFFA ref
14-42 vs Stormers (ditto) AUS ref
35-40 vs Bulls (daylight robbery) SAFFA ref

In total we have 6 Kiwi refs, 1 Aussie ref and 6 Saffa refs. Oh, wait, another foreigner in the semis. :) so, it’s 6 “us” vs 7 “them”.

And now compare to the Bulls: 11 homies, 2 Aussies, 1 Kiwi.

    Go figure. :)

Hookers: Du Plessis, Smit, Botha, Liebenberg
    Locks: Matfield, Bekker, Botha, Rossouw
Flanks: Deysel, Smith, Burger, Brussouw, Louw, Potgieter
8th men: Spies, Kanko, Vermeulen, Alberts
9′s: FDP, Pienaar, Vermaak, Hougaard (one day)
Centres: Fourie, JDV, Steyn, Olivier, De Jongh

    Former Kwaru rugby forward dies

    2010/05/14
    Alvin Reeves

FORMER Kwazakele Rugby Union (Kwaru) frontrower Welile Joseph Speelman passed away from a heart condition at his home in Zwide last week. He was 67.

Speelman was a member of the 1975 Kwaru team which won the South African Cup competition.

It was a side that was considered by the masses as being the black Springboks at the time and included the likes of Archie Mkele, Peter Mkata and Present Ntonga.

Speelman started his rugby career playing for Walmer Wallabies in the ’60s. “Bra Weza”, as he was fondly known, also played with and against the likes of Cheeky and Valence Watson, Temba Ludwaba and Dan Qeqe.

His crowning career moment came in 1975 when he was named in that star-studded Kwaru team which won the national cup final.

His funeral will be held at Ebenezer Methodist Church in Zwide at 11am tomorrow.

Frankly, I’m glad to have Frogs in the pool. Good hard rugby early on, no easy ride like in France07. I am wary of them much more than any other – because we all know South Africa are flying high and Australia are always a potential banana skin. But we usually are in the dark what France can do. Potentially they may be the best in the world on their day.

Others do not count that much, of course, do not forgetting that Irish, Pumas, Welsh and English are decent sides, too.

@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-448: I live up in Cambridge. There was ice on my car’s windows at 7am two mornings ago. ICE in the middle of May for goodness sake.

I moved here for pull reasons too, notably the better teaching of archaeology for the region I am interested in – North Africa.

I have only had a quick flick through the posts on this thread but it seems to me that the majority of the Stormers fans are underestimating the Waratahs as they are already talking about the final (presuming they win tomorrow that is).

Even though I don’t like the Waratahs, I must admit that they have looked very good the past couple of weeks whilst the Stormers seem to be plateauing a bit.

The Stormers are definately favourites but it is not as clear cut as some fans seem to think, 1999 anyone?

    @Simon7(Simon7)-468:

The Waratahs were excellent vs Bulls at Loftus, their first 50mins prob the best rugby this season. Like em or not, even in the games they have lost theyve always been there or thereabouts, hard to put away. Top Semi opponents for anyone.

If both Semis get tough, neutral, referees then this comp aint over yet.

    Yip, it’s definately not over.

The games next weekend are going to be epic regardless of who you support.

The Tah’s were great and the Bumblecanes a product of one thing…terrible coaching. Sorry but the buck ultimately stops there and the terrible thing is it has always been the same with the Canes. Great players, star studded but no discipline, no real structure and no real game plan…and at times no idea. These are things that a good coach is all over like a fox terrier and bangs into place( or should have years ago). I think Cooper has got by on what the team might eventually bring to the game rather than what is front of the people at the moment, more of a promise rather than results.. Good bye and good riddance I say and lets see if NZ can cough up a Ewan McKenzie and make the F’n Hurricanes do what they have been capable of for years …WIN!!

I have watched Dickenson in a few games he has reffed…he has been by far the best, standout, in marshalling the breakdown.
His handling of the breakdown has been exceptional. I think this is one area he has really put some focus on and come out trumps.

I will have him for the RWC final.

My gut feel is the Bulls have made a blunder…they should be doing away with the Stormers.
Bulls playing Crusaders for a semi…they will do away with the Crusaders due to double travel.
If Crusaders beat the Bulls then travel is a myth!!

Stormers could beat the waratahs, my gut feel says no way, then Stormers to play bulls…hmmm!

  • 475.captain fantail: Reply to this comment

@wallabie.(wallabie.)-474: I really think the Crusaders will be the bulls if they have to play them in the finals. The Cruisers travel well, and after the last match they have their tails in the air…but also agree they have made a big mistake but once again, who cares. I didnt care if they played their A,B,C team..thats their business to make those decisions and shoulder whatever consequences come out of it….
After the last match between the Bulls and Crusaders the reality was that the Bulls won on a couple of missed penalties and(that any ref coiuld have missed mind you) the Crusaders know this and are full of confidence so its not too the Crusaders detriment if they have to play the Bulls in the final.
Big Hit amply showed the missed penalties on the Youtube site he posted. ;-)
