Genia in doubt for Wallabies

Genia in doubt for Wallabies

Scrumhalf Will Genia is sidelined with a knee injury and could miss Australia’s Test season opener against Fiji on 5 June.

The Reds captain played out the Super 14 season with a knee injury but will now enjoy a break to ensure no further damage is done. Genia will be out for three weeks with a grade 1-2 medial ligament strain, but is still hoping to feature in the match against the Fijians.

‘Physically, I’ll be right [for Fiji],’ he said. ‘I’m disappointed but I’m very happy that it’s not too long.’

Genia’s Reds team-mate Scott Higginbotham is not so lucky. After enjoying a great season for the Reds, the flanker suffered an ankle sprain in the last match against the Highlanders and will be out for six to eight weeks. Judging by his form, Higginbotham was a contender for the Wallabies’ No 6 position.

    Massive blow if Genia won’t be right in time.
    Like Du Preez, he’ll be the fulcrum of the Wallabies side come world cup time.
    And Higgenbotham’s injury is also a big blow.
    Finally, some quality back-up to Elsom and Palu.

    @grant10(grant10)-3: If Genia wobbly leave him to recoup and go with Valentine or Burgess. Both are more than capable.

    Higginbotham is a shame, I was looking forward to seeing him get a run at test level. The lad has showed improvement all season.

    @RugbyRulz(RugbyRulz)-9:

    Eish – no Robinson, Moore, Horwill, Higgenbotham, Genia (potentially), Mortlock (?)

    Hmm…

    Don’t rate Brown.

    @puff(puff)-10: Not my choice either, but he does play 8 and works well with Pocock as does Hodgson. Hoiles could be there on form but I don’t know if ARU are interested. He may well get a run against Fiji, he would give it a go. Kanko style of 8 against Fiji would work.

    June tests… you play with what you got.
