Jonny Wilkinson is a serious doubt for England’s June tour to Australasia after picking up a rib injury playing for Toulon last Sunday.

Wilkinson featured in the French club’s 28-21 defeat to Cardiff in the European Challenge final in Marseilles and cried off with the injury six minutes into the second half.

‘We don’t know if he has serious bruising or a fractured rib or cartilage. We should know more Tuesday when he undergoes a medical scan,’ said Toulon manager Philippe Saint-Andre, admitting that if the injury was “serious” Wilkinson could be ruled out of the tour.

England face Australia on 12 and 19 June and the New Zealand Maori on 23 June.
