Gethin Jenkins won’t play the Springboks at the Millennium Stadium next Saturday.
The British & Irish Lions and Wales loosehead suffered a calf injury in Cardiff’s European Challenge Cup final when they beat Toulon. He’s out for between four and six weeks.
No replacement has been named yet.
‘Obviously Gethin is an outstanding player and everyone knows how highly I rate Gethin,’ said Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards.
‘It’s like having another back-rower on the pitch as well as having a prop forward. We do have other loose-heads who will be jumping out of their skin to get that No 1 shirt on and to run out and represent their country in a Test.’
James Hook, Luke Charteris, Dwayne Peel and Martyn Williams were also ruled out earlier in the month. Duncan Jones, Richard Hibbard, Dafydd Jones, Dan Lydiate, Gareth Cooper, Tom Shanklin and Mark Jones were also omitted due to injury, while Melbourne Rebels-bound Gareth Delve wasn’t considered.
