DF Malan were leading 12-9 against Rangers Silvertree when the refree ended the match after fighting broke out among supporters.
The match reached boiling point with 10 minutes remaining when the frustration on the pitch (three Rangers and one DF Malan player had been sin binned earlier) spilled into the stands.
DF Malan’s forwards gave them the upper hand in the first half, with the loose forward trio of Dewald Jordaan (eighthman), De Waal Steyn and Hennie Britz outplaying their opposite numbers at the breakdown. This gave the DF Malan backline plenty of ball.
However, scoring in the first half was limited to the boot, with Rangers centre Rafiq Isaacs backing up a solid defensive effort with two penalties and DF Malan’s Zandre Herselman slotting three. Rangers squandered their limited opportunities through sloppy handling and finishing.
The second half was a more evenly fought contest, with Ranger’s eighthman Abba Abrahams dominating in the loose phases. But the visitors failed to convert their scoring chances into points, and Herselman and Isaacs exchanged penalties.
In other results, Paarl Gymnasium destroyed their neighbours Boland Landbou 76-13, scoring 10 tries to one to consolidate their second place SA schools ranking. The hosts broke Boland Landbou’s flimsy defence at will, with Konrad Loubster scoring a hat-trick. Willie Viljoen was a standout, slotting all 10 conversions and two penalties to go with his try for a 31-point haul.
Tygerberg destroyed Stellenberg 57-31, having led 24-6 at the break, Paul Roos overwhelmed Paarl Boys’ 31-17 contrary to their sixth and fourth place rankings respectively, while Wynberg beat SACS 22-11.
