Jano snubs Sharks move

Jano Vermaak says he will stay with the Lions and won’t be signing with the Sharks.

According to media reports, Lions scrumhalf Vermaak and centre Doppies la Grange have clauses in their contracts that allow them to be released and sign for another union. Vermaak is contracted with the Lions until 2011 but it was reported that he could decide to sign for the Sharks in the next week.

However, Vermaak denied this.

‘I’m not going to sign with the Sharks and I’m staying with the Lions,’ Vermaak told keo.co.za. ‘I don’t know where these rumours come from but I’m not leaving.’

La Grange was also linked with a move to the Sharks, but Lions CEO Manie Reyneke dismissed this by announcing that the centre has signed a contract extension. The move was always unlikely as Cheetahs centre Meyer Bosman is expected to transfer to Durban once his current contract expires in October.

‘There have been rumors circulating in the media for the past week or so that both Doppies and Jano are leaving the Lions,’ Reyneke told the Lions website.

‘I would like to now put the rumors to rest. Doppies has just signed an extension on his current contract and we are currently in discussions with Jano, who will in all likelihood also sign within the next few days.’

Meanwhile, Vermaak said he feels ’100%’ as the Lions prepare for the Currie Cup.

‘I feel much better and there’s no pain in my ankle,’ said Vermaak. ‘There was still some pain during the Super 14 and I believe that I did come back a bit too early. But I’m fitter now and looking forward to the season with the Lions.

‘[New head coach] John Mitchell has really made an improvement so far. He has great rugby knowledge and reads the game very well. I’m sure the Lions will do very well in the Currie Cup this season.’

If Mitchell has made an improvement, does that mean Vermaak rates him higher as D.Muir?

And I see that Doppies has signed an extension according to Manie as well. Thanks god, that was a close one. Now we just have to get the Lions to take Pretoors and we will be okay.

Good to see the two of them committing to the Lions – they need an influx of players not a migration. Why are the Sharks on a mission to buy everyone and everything? Yes we had a shortage of quality in the S14 – but Doppie and Pretorious are not the players we should be approaching… Vermaak would have been quality, but we dont have a problem at 9 (kockott and mcloed fill the gaps nicely)

What a boykie, still a proud Lion! The wheel turns, if ever so slowly for the Lions. Keep the faith.

@ali(ali)-15: That is all on paper stuff, I will wait for the first game to see if anything has changed. Luckily for them they are playing the Leopards in their first game.

    Give the man a raise.

I hate how the Sharks refuse to develop their own players and just spend all their tourism money on pillaging the real rugby provinces.

Sharks = Player Sharks – similar to loan sharks. Breed your own players and stop stealing from other franchises you bunch of XYZs!

Eina – and then the Lions go and lose their warm up match to the Pumas, while the Sharks crush the Valke by 80 points to 3 ! And they are both sure to enjoy another fruitless Currie Cup and Super rugby season again and again.

Daar is nie pille vir ‘dom’ nie.

Good luck Jano and Doppies. The Lions and you deserve each other.
