Pieter Louw scored a hat-trick in Western Province’s 29-5 win over the Griffons in a friendly in Welkom.
In Province’s only warm-up before the competition proper starts next week, the visitors went into a comfortable 24-0 lead at the break. Louw had claimed a brace by that stage, while lock Adriaan Fondse also got his name on the scoreboard.
The hosts however, had missed two kickable penalties, which could have reduced the deficit.
In the second half the Griffons successfully nullified the visitors, and the second half score was 5-5. Griffons scrumhalf Theodor Schultz scored his side’s only points, while Louw claimed his third with 10 minutes remaining.
WP face the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein next week, and they know an improved performance is necessary against last year’s finalists.
