Saints keen to get going

St Stithians College make the trip across the Jukskei river on Saturday for their annual fixture against St Alban’s College.

Saints recently returned from Harare where they played in the Independent Schools festival. They were missing a few players who were at the provincial Youth Weeks, so they sent a young side and lost two of their three games there.

St Stithians coach Ian Rickelton was satisfied with their performance.

‘We beat Peterhouse, and went down narrowly to St John’s Harare and St Andrews [Bloemfontein], but the boys played well given that it was a bit of a makeshift team,’ he told keo.co.za.

Rickelton says they expect a tough encounter at St Alban’s.

‘They may not have had a very successful season, but they are always difficult to beat on their home ground and they have just returned from a tour to Argentina, so they will be match fit and well prepared,’ he said.

‘We had a short break after the Zimbabwe trip, and then got the players back last week for three intensive practice sessions. Everyone has recovered from last term’s niggles and the boys are eager to get going again.’

Saints have three more matches ahead of them. They play visiting teams from England on Tuesday and Thursday next week and then round off the season with an away game at Pretoria Boys High on Saturday, 31 July.

Saturday’s game at St Alban’s kicks off at 12:15pm.
