Tygerberg won the battle of north versus south when they beat Bishops 6-5 at home. In Northern Suburbs derbies Fairmont and De Kuilen were winners.
Bishops scored the only try of the game through frontranker Willem Gresse, while Tygerberg centre Ian Heynes kicked two penalties. The visitors pressed hard for the winning score in the final minutes of the match but stubborn defence from the hosts kept them out.
Bishops dominated territory in the first half with flank Evan Strauss and No 8 James Crowson combining well and impressing with their driving play, and Gresse winning quality turnover ball. Fullback Neil Bruwer and flyhalf Justin Geduld made some excellent try-saving tackles. For Tygerberg, lock Marvin Orie contested well in the lineouts but he wasn’t supported by the rest of the pack.
After the break, the hosts’ forwards played with more fire, with No 8 Jody Reyneke and hooker Entienne Swanepoel leading the charge. However, their backs failed to convert the possession into tries, with Heynes’ second penalty the only score of the second spell.
Hosts Fairmont easily dealt with traditional rivals Settlers in the English-medium schools derby match in Durbanville. Christopher Ward kicked four penalties and Fairmont outscored the visitors by two tries to one.
In Kuilsriver, home team De Kuilen recovered from a halftime deficit to score five tries and beat HTS Bellville 35-20. Darryl Losper kicked all five De Kuilen conversions.
