Keo.co.za brings you the news from the Currie Cup.

Herkie holds onto 10 jersey

Herkie Kruger will start at flyhalf despite reports that Elton Jantjes would front Griquas.

John Mitchell has stuck with the experienced pivot for the game in Kimberley and has handed the captaincy to Franco van der Merwe in the absence of Wikus van Heerden.

Lions - 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Marius Delport, 12 Waylon Murray, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Herkie Kruger, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Franco van der Merwe (c), 6 Derick Minnie, 5 David Bulbring, 4 George Earle, 3 Ross Geldenhuys, 2 Martin Bezuidenhout, 1 Kevin Buys.
Subs: 16 Edgar Marutlulle, 17 Wayne Swart, 18 Trevor Hall, 19 Jonathan Mokuena, 20 Chris Jonck, 21 Elton Jantjies, 22 Doppies la Grange.

Strauss in, Bosman out for Cheetahs

Meyer Bosman will miss the Cheetahs’ clash against the Bulls while Adriaan Strauss will make his first Currie Cup appearance on Saturday.

Bosman suffered a concussion during the Cheetahs’ 33-26 win over Griquas last Friday and is expected to be out for two weeks. He will be replaced by Corne Uys at inside centre, which sees JW Jonker feature on the bench.

Good news for the Cheetahs is that hooker Adriaan Strauss has recovered from a shoulder injury which he suffered during the Super 14. Lock Izak van der Westhuizen has recovered from an ankle injury to start in the second row as Walti Vermeulen drops to the wood.

Meanwhile, the Cheetahs are set to lose their new recruits MJ Mentz and Shandre Frolick. Mentz is negotiating a new two-year contract with the Springboks Sevens while Frolick has decided to play club rugby in Johannesburg. If the Cheetahs need Frolick, they will be able to call him up.

Cheetahs - 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Philip Snyman, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Corne Uys, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 10 Louis Strydom, 9 Tewis de Bruyn, 8 Ashley Johnson, 7 Juan Smith (c), 6 Hendro Scholtz, 5 Barend Pieterse, 4 Izak van der Westhuizen, 3 WP Nel, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Subs: 16 Skipper Badenhorst, 17 Kobus Calldo, 18 Waltie Vermeulen, 19 Kabamba Floors, 20 Tertius Carse, 21 Sias Ebersohn, 22 JW Jonker.

Griquas sweat on Basson

In-form wing Bjorn Basson could miss Griquas’ match against the Lions in Kimberley on Saturday.

Basson, who has scored three tries in two games this season, suffered a knee injury against the Cheetahs and has already taken pain injections in order to be ready for this weekend. However, should he not recover in time, Richard Lawson will replace the Springbok wing and Bertus Swanepoel will provide cover from the bench.

There is one other change in the starting XV as tighthead prop Jacobie Adriaanse is promoted ahead of Albertus Buckle.

Griquas – 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Rocco Jansen, 13 Wilmaure Louw, 12 Barry Geel, 11 Bjorn Basson/Richard Lawson, 10 Naas Olivier (c), 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Leon Karemaker, 7 Davon Raubenheimer, 6 Wesley Wilkins, 5 Cecil Kemp, 4 Frikkie Spies, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Rayno Barnes, 1 Steph Roberts.
Subs: 16 Simon Westraadt, 17 Albertus Buckle, 18 Michael Passaportis/Gerhard Human/Rohan Kitshoff, 19 Marnus Hugo, 20 Matt Rosslee, 21 Richard Lawson/Bertus Swanepoel.

That Basson dragon really should be at the Bulls!

Griquas have some really good talent, but no depth unfortunately, which is sad because they can really give the big 4 a run for their money when their team is fit and without injuries.

@stormersboy(stormersboy)-2: Ja true. They are also known as WP’s third team. Check all those province players in that lineup.

Why is Naka insisting with R. Ebersohn at 13 when Corne Uys is a 13 and Robert a 12?

    It frustrates me!!!

Does he know something I don’t know? Am I the only 1 who believes Robert is a good inside centre and can become a great one? Is 13 Robert’s preferred position now?

    2. 3rd team? Hah. They’ll kick WP’s behind this season.

@Bouts(Bouts)-6: LOL now I’ve heard it all….kick our behinds? Seriously? We thumped the Free State, and you lost to them, but you’ve got ambition of kicking our butts? Ok…..

Lions – Griquas is my game of the weekend. The Griquas tend to be difficult to beat in Kimberly and the Lions could very well get a snotklap here.

    Subs: 16 Simon Westraadt,Rohan Kitshoff,20 Matt Rosslee,

All these players were allowed to leave WP to go look for gametime elsewhere. But they have a clause in their contract that says WP have 1st choice on them when their contracts at the other unions are finished. There was an article in SA rugby a few months ago about this. Very innovative of Rassie. Instead of letting these guys sit bench at WP he sort of “loans” them out for say 2 years then WP decide if they want to sign them again. Most of the guys come back because they want to be part of the set up at WP. This is done mostly with the WP academy players.

It’s a pity we couldn’t have loaned instead of “giving” Mullet Hougaard to the Bulls…
