Tri-Nations latest (Thurs)
22 Jul 2010
Keo.co.za brings you the news from the Tri-Nations.
Monty wants to bin the boot
Springboks kicking coach Percy Montgomery has called for a more ball in hand approach against Australia.
‘I want us to kick less against the Wallabies and carry the ball more. The kicks will also have to be a lot better than has been the case up to now,’ said Montgomery.
‘The second week [in Wellington] was much better. We pointed it out to the players after the Test in Auckland and the statistics from the second Test shows how much better we were. The last thing the players should have done was to kick the ball away. And that’s precisely what we did.’
‘The chase of the kick is just as important and that is another area in which I expect a major improvement. It cannot be measured by statistics. It’s an attitude and I’m happy that we are improving. We could get away with it against Italy, but not against the All Blacks. We have to go back to the basics.’
Wallabies make late change
Matt Hodgson will miss the Wallabies’ Tri-Nations opener against the Springboks in Brisbane on Saturday because of a groin injury.
The Western Force flanker, who was named on the bench, suffered a minor groin strain in training on Tuesday and was ruled out after the injury worsened on Thursday. Hodgson will be replaced by Force team-mate Ben McCalman amongst the reserves.
Boks take ref frustrations to Sanzar
South African Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins has instructed the Springboks’ representative on the SANZAR legal committee, Judge Lex Mpati, to look into the matter of perceived inconsistencies in the application of the laws.
‘A number of stakeholders have complained to me about the lack of consistency in the rulings of the judicial officials in rugby,’ Hoskins said.
‘I have stressed to Judge Mpati the seriousness of the matter, and he has promised that he will come back to me in writing hopefully by next week. I don’t want to say too much further, as previously I have spoken about the issue in the media and nothing has been done about it.’
Tickets to go on sale in Soweto
Tickets for the historic Tri-Nations clash at the National Stadium will go on sale in Soweto on Monday.
The Golden Lions Rugby Union are the official hosts for the South Africa vs New Zealand fixture, which was originally planned to take place at Ellis Park. 5 000 tickets will be available from 09:00 on Monday, 26 July, sold for R100 on a first-come-first-served basis.
Buyers will be limited to four tickets per customer. These tickets will only be available at Sowetan outlets.

@RugbyRulz(RugbyRulz)-145:
Should’ve?
It was blatant, off the ball, after the whistle and dangerous.
That is about all you need to know about the Thorne incident.
On the JDV/Ranger issue I will say it again…
The OFFICIAL protocol dictates that for a citing commissioner to cite a player he has to deem the offense to be of such a nature that it would possibly have resulted in a Red Card… Plain and simple.
Both the Ranger and JDV incidents does not come close to that.
The citing was pathetic.
22 Jul 2010, 11:31 am
@rugby4eva(rugby4eva)-149: Ranger’s tackle was illegal, he’s supposed to have his arm up but he went into it Sonny Bill Williams style, illegal.
22 Jul 2010, 11:33 am
@rugby4eva(rugby4eva)-149: Yes PdV is a tad off his game in all respects. Hopefully a little less blame and taking ownership would be in order.
22 Jul 2010, 11:34 am
@RugbyRulz(RugbyRulz)-150: Wenger is the Arsenal football (soccer) manager, any time he’s asked a risky question he just says he didn’t see it.
Confident of victory at the weekend? Wallaby team looks good overall.
22 Jul 2010, 11:34 am
@Muttonbird(Muttonbird)-146:
its not just with the rugby.
I have seen many a Saffa superiority thinking in Aus and seen them being given a handing off.
I witnessed a guy being pretty rude to a cashier and the cashier gave back “take your better than a k.ff.r shite back to RSA where you came from..” in a very loud tone for all to hear in the shop. “you and your missus can piss off if you continue to be rude”.
This was from a coloured girl at the counter.
was very funny!!
22 Jul 2010, 11:35 am
World champ whingers alright. Never heard so much pathetic grizzling.
Rightly or wrongly, merit or not – suck it up. I’ve respected bok all my near 50 years but I just can’t respect this PdV managed circus.
Bok has officially become laughing stock of the rugby world. I’ve heard more credible conspiracy theories preached by drunk religous crazys.
Grow up, focus less on why everyone else is the source of your problems and more on getting your own game together.
22 Jul 2010, 11:36 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-151:
Thorn and JdV were both cited and suspended… rightly so
Ranger was penalised and that was correct.
Comparing incidents is futile.
22 Jul 2010, 11:37 am
@wallabie.(wallabie.)-155:
Hey.
What you talking about coloured girls.
22 Jul 2010, 11:37 am
Another telling stat. Ricky made 31 passes, Ruan 33!!
22 Jul 2010, 11:38 am
@Qrest(Qrest)-156:
You don’t have to read it all.
Go away if it bugs you.
22 Jul 2010, 11:39 am
154. Big Hit(Big Hit
Bollocks you need glasses..they even slowed it down for you wombat…That was nothing like a SBW…
22 Jul 2010, 11:39 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-151:
It does not have to be deemed as a red card for it to be cited.
It gets cited if the incident requires further sanction or to determine if the sanction on the field was satisfactory or if it deserved sanctioning but was not given during the match.
If citing only occurs if it is deemd a red card…then it still applies that all incidents are then checked to determine if it is a red card offense.
22 Jul 2010, 11:39 am
@Big Hit(Big Hit)-154: Hopeful is always the best approach. Confident is a tad overly optimistic.
22 Jul 2010, 11:40 am
@wallabie.(wallabie.)-155: HHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!! OMFG!! THAT IS THE FUNNIEST THING I’VE EVER HEARD!!!!!!!!!!! I’VE BEEN SCREAMING WITH LAUGHTER FOR THE LAST 3 MINUTES, I ONLY JUST MANAGED TO STOP LAUGHING LONG ENOUGH TO TYPE!!! LOLZ!!!!!!!!!
22 Jul 2010, 11:40 am
@RugbyRulz(RugbyRulz)-157:
I dont know if you have trouble reading or if you are just conveniently missing the point.
The <supOFFICIAL protocol dictates that for a citing commissioner to cite a player he has to deem the offense to be of such a nature that it would possibly have resulted in a Red Card… Plain and simple.
Both the Ranger and JDV incidents does not come close to that.
The citing was pathetic.
Now if you claim the incidents, or both JDV and Ranger incidents deserved a RED CARD then I have nothing more to say anymore really.
22 Jul 2010, 11:41 am
@Dawn(Dawn)-158:
I love coloured girls…but I am not married to one!
22 Jul 2010, 11:42 am
@wallabie.(wallabie.)-162:
I took the trouble to actually to get in contact with SANZAR officials to get the official procedures they follow, or that are supposed to be followed.
That was their official response, go argue with them if you want.
22 Jul 2010, 11:43 am
@wallabie.(wallabie.)-157: Hey Wallabie, that Saffa you mentioned, he’s an Australian now. He probably left our shores cause he couldn’t handle a majority ruled democracy with a diverse culture. Hence he now resides with you.
22 Jul 2010, 11:44 am
@wallabie.(wallabie.)-155: Ever cross your mind that maybe he was just a rude d*ck or just a dude having a bad day? You’ve never been rude?
Blows my mind that using disgusting language like that is seen as funny…where does she get off? Clearly a very profesional well trained person. (Even if he was being rude, which I’m not condoning by the way, there are wyas to deal with clients like that)
Your simplistic generalisations are getting really boring. If I come across a rude Australian (god forbid) does that meant automatically every aussie on the planet is a boorish drunk who talks too loudly and scr*ws his livestock?
22 Jul 2010, 11:47 am
@Atreides(Atreides)-171: Heard some pretty bad stories about Aussies in Durban for the world cup.
22 Jul 2010, 11:48 am
@Ratel Brussow(Morne Steyn is under-rated)-168:
True.
What was even funnier was the coloured lady had an Aussie accent but reckon parents came from RSA.
22 Jul 2010, 11:51 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-165: I have stated my opinion on all incidents. I suggest you take the time to read my posts, digest them and move on.
I already have.
22 Jul 2010, 11:53 am
@RugbyRulz(RugbyRulz)-172:
Yes you have stated that the recent citing on JDV was justified yet you seem to have a disregard on what is supposed to be official protocols…
Digested, moved on.
22 Jul 2010, 11:54 am
@Qrest(Qrest)-156: You mustve been hitting the papsak hard then during 2002/3 if you could respect that circus and yet not the current team!
22 Jul 2010, 12:11 pm
@Big Hit(Big Hit)-147: hey 008 don’t bring arsene into this!
stu said “we’re not sure” to smit asking “what about the spear”?
22 Jul 2010, 12:12 pm
does anybody else find it incredibly rich for kiwis to tell saffas to stop whinging?
this after a 2007 national whinge lasting a month and involving the whole populace, the government, the nzru and half the sheep population.
22 Jul 2010, 12:19 pm
@charo(charo)-176: And from Gunther’s earlier post Saffas give their poodles a workout.
Mate dont be silly with the sheep-shagging, shackle-dragging, convict, deliverance, etc jibes. It isn’t balanced.
22 Jul 2010, 12:22 pm
Hit and run people.
I may not be on over the next few days, so good luck.
22 Jul 2010, 12:35 pm
@RugbyRulz(RugbyRulz)-177:
erm, point to where i made a sheepshagging, shackledragging jibe. please
22 Jul 2010, 13:03 pm
@Atreides(Atreides)-169:
I am not the one to detrmine how people react or if they should be professional and how they should manage poor clientele.
Thats their business!!
yea they could have had a bad day…the saffa and also maybe the cashier. who knows how much abuse either took before they both exploded.
I dont care but it was all too funny. It was funny when one looks at it from the outside and having some knowledge that maybe there is something deeper to it…ie both of them from RSA and how they would have percieived each other to be if they were both in RSA.
Am I generalising …maybe so but there is more than enpough examples of this superiority from saffas in Aus. I dont make it up.
22 Jul 2010, 13:04 pm
Is scott higginbotham injured? Because if he isnt, why isnt he starting at 8, with brown on the bench, heck if hogdson was fit brown shouldnt even be in the team.
22 Jul 2010, 13:09 pm
@Rhys7(Rhys7)-181:
Higginbotham was not considered as he has only played just over a game since coming back from injury. He is in the wallabie set up to get in the mode but will need to play more club games.

Boks in Brisbane: The real story
Wed, 21 Jul 2010 23:26
If you do not win at a venue for a while, it becomes a hoodoo venue, and the Springboks have not won in Brisbane for 39 years. That’s enough to make a hoodoo. Let’s have a look at what has happened in the warm, gentle capital of Queensland. Not only have the Springboks found winning hard, they have also been well beaten.
This is the overview of results:
1956: South Africa won 9-0
1965: Australia won 12-8
1971: South Africa won 14-6
1993: Australia won 28-20
1997: Australia won 32-20
1999: Australia won 32-6
2002: Australia won 38-27
2003: Australia won 29-9
2006: Australia won 49-0
2009: Australia won 21-6
The Springboks went to Australia for the first time in 1921, at a time when Australian rugby was New South Wales. They did not even go north to Brisbane, playing one in Melbourne and four in Sydney.
The 1937 Springboks played two Tests in their 11 matches in Australia, both in Sydney but this time they went north and played against and Australian XV, Toowoomba and Queensland, the first and the last in Brisbane. They beat the Australian XV with nine Queenslanders, four New South Welshmen and two from Victoria 36-3 and Queensland 39-4 on a day when Danie Craven played fullback.
Then came 1956 and the Springboks battled in Australia in two dull Tests before going on to be defeated in New Zealand. The second of the two Tests was in Brisbane.
Back the Springboks came in 1965 on their way to another defeat in New Zealand and this time collected two defeats en route in Australia in the annus miserabilis of South African rugby when the Springboks went on a losing spree of eight out of nine Tests, including two defeats in Australia.
They came back in 1971, just to Australia and caused much upheaval and vigorous opposition from those who objected to apartheid but they won all their matches.
Their only tour to Australia was in 1993 with a Test in Brisbane . They had won in Sydney but lost in Brisbane and had the ignominy of having a Springboks sent off in a Test for the first time – James Small for being rude to the referee, Ed Morrison.
After that matches were part of the Tri-Nations.

Jake White believed in defence and on this occasion it looked a complete flop as the Wallabies ran in six tries to record their biggest win ever over the Springboks, the biggest win ever in the history of the Tri-Nations – and it was the Springboks’ opening match of the 2006 Tri-Nations.

1 match amongst 1000’s. Atleast Henry had the wherewithal to wait 6mths before complaining to his own employers. The French even gave him their highest Fair Play Award for NOT whinging immediately post-match, such were the clear and ovious provocation from referee Barnes. Meanwhile Krusty the Clown and Matfield and Smit didnt waste a minute – they whinged after Auckland, before Wellington, after Wellington and immediately upon landing in Brisbane. They still havent stopped. This after being nailed by a visibly better side.
In summary, in 2010, the Boks have whinged about the ref in 2 from 2. Or ‘100%’ in any other language.
David McHugh was injured out of a Test match by Piet van Zyl because of a ‘Kiwi-Aus refereeing conspiracy’. He is Irish. I suppose Paddy O’Brien, Paul Honiss, Stu Dickinson and countless others arent tho – but theyve ALL been called ‘cheats’ by Safas over time. Only by Safas tho.
In 2009, the Boks wore righteous armbands on to the field because of refereeing/citing conspiracies. They refused to pay their IRB fines.
This is merely a small, on-hand selection amongst so many many more.
Enjoy the – latest – SARU whinge about the ‘judicial process’ as reported only this morning. As you might say, thats rather “rich”.
