Monument will meet Kempton Park in the quarter-final stage of the Beeld Trophy on Saturday.
Monument are the Golden Lions provincial champions – they beat Florida 54-13 in the final – while Kempton Park, who were runners-up in the Valke league, beat Eldoraigne 31-28 in a play-off game last weekend.
The Beeld Trophy competition is the modern-day continuation of what used to be called the Adminitrator’s Trophy, and later the Director’s Trophy. It involves the provincial league champions of the provinces making the North Vaal Schools Association – Golden Lions, Blue Bulls, Leopards, Pumas, Valke and Limpopo.
Monument have emerged as overall winners six times so far. They beat Hoërskool Waterkloof 33-20 in last year’s final. Their previous success was also against Waterkloof. They beat them 30-17 in 2005.
Monument beat Kempton Park 30-17 when the sides met in the pool stages of the NuPower Tuks competition back in March. Monnas ended up winning that competition, which was contested by almost all of the schools that have gone through to the knockout stages of the Beeld Trophy.
Coach Wynand Moolman is, however, cagey about making predictions.
‘We have been in good form, but in the knockout stages of a competition the pressure is on and anything can happen,’ he told keo.co.za. ‘So we will be ignoring that previous result. We have had a week off and have prepared well, though. We have one or two players who were injured for the Florida game back and the boys are keen to make history by retaining the trophy.’
The quarter-finals in all four divisions of the competition will be played on Saturday.
