Currie Cup latest (Thurs)

Keo.co.za brings the news from the Currie Cup.

Beast on bench

Beast Mtawarira will feature on the bench when the Sharks face the Leopards in Rustenburg on Friday.

The loosehead prop started in the win against the Lions last weekend but has been replaced by Pat Cilliers in the starting line-up. Another change in the front row sees Eugene van Staden start at tighthead in Jannie du Plessis’ place.

Wing Odwa Ndungane passed his medical test this week and also finds a starting place while scrumhalf Rory Kockott returns to the run-on side as Charl McLeod is dropped to the reserves.

As expected, Willem Alberts, Keegan Daniel and Jacques Botes form the loose forward trio.

Sharks – 15 Louis Ludik, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Stefan Terblanche (c), 12 Andries Strauss, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Patrick Lambie, 9 Rory Kockott, 8 Willem Alberts, 7 Keegan Daniel, 6 Jacques Botes, 5 Alistair Hargreaves, 4 Ross Skeate, 3 Eugene van Staden, 2 Craig Burden, 1 Pat Cilliers.
Subs: 16 Bismarck du Plessis, 17 Beast Mtawarira, 18 Steven Sykes, 19 Michael Rhodes, 20 Charl McLeod, 21 Monty Dumond, 22 Riaan Swanepoel.

Mitchell changes three

John Mitchell has made three changes for the Lions’ game against the Cheetahs.

Renaldo Bothma replaces the injured Trevor Hall at flank while tighthead Ross Geldenhuys is in for a battling Kevin Buys. Edgar Marutlulle’s inclusion means hooker Martin Bezuidenhout moves to the bench.

Lions – 15. Jaco Taute, 14. Deon van Rensburg, 13. Waylon Murray, 12. Doppies la Grange, 11. Michael Killian, 10. Elton Jantjies, 9. Jano Vermaak, 8. Warren Whiteley, 7. Derek Minnie, 6. Renaldo Bothma, 5. Franco van der Merwe, 4. George Earle, 3. Ross Geldenhuys, 2. Edgar Marutlulle, 1. JC Janse van Rensburg
Subs: 16. Martin Bezuidenhout, 17. Wayne Swart, 18. Johan Snyman, 19. Joshua Strauss, 20. JP Joubert, 21. Burton Francis, 22. Jannie Boshoff

Griquas get loosie boost

No 8 Leon Karemaker and flanker Rohan Kitshoff will start for Griquas when they face the Pumas on Friday.

Both loose forwards were sidelined when Griquas lost 50-3 against Western Province last weekend. However, Karemaker and Kitshoff have recovered from their respective injuries this week to start in Kimberley.

Matthew Rosslee has been promoted to inside centre ahead of Barry Geel, who drops to the wood.

Griquas – 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Richard Lawson, 13 Wilmaure Louw, 12 Matthew Rosslee, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Naas Olivier (c), 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Leon Karemaker, 7 Davon Raubenheimer 6 Rohan Kitshoff , 5 Cecil Kemp, 4 Frikkie Spies, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Ryno Barnes, 1 Steph Roberts

Sharks looking good. hopefully no injuries.

With the current squad we have the firepower to challenge for the semis.

Not the biggest strauss fan.rather give rudi keil a run alongside lambie. altho strauss defence might aid lambie, but then again there is swanepoel who plays the same role.

Would be interesting to see andre pretorius at 10,lambie 12 and odwa not starting.
dont know about jacobs at 13 when he returns.
    sorry for the ramble.

Sharks backline looking very slow all of a sudden with Ndungane there. Wheres that Vulindlu chap. Surely hed be a better bet? I’m sure hes a 13 anyway so he could also take Stefs place.

And I doubt Beast was dropped, looks like Plums front row rotation policy is coming into effect here against the lesser sides.

@stormersboy(stormersboy)-2: About the small wager how does a case of beer sound or the cash equivalent if you not a beer drinker. Are you coming to Joburg for the AB test then we can settle it then as I will be back in Joburg to see the test.

@Airwell(Airwell)-4: Sounds good to me. To be clear, we are wagering the outcome of what again? This weekend derby or position on the log?

Not Odwa, he is far too slow to be a wing.

Thanks, this morning the heading read ‘Beast Dropped’.

Gareth has obviously done some editing during the day.

wouldnt it be interesting if the lions played promotion/relegation against eastern province especially with some calling for the latter to replace the former in super rugby.

lions would drill them a new butt hole.

anyone know if Mapoe will now go to the sharks next year or is it open season for the other unions to take a punt at his services?

@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-12: you would think so wouldnt you, but its not so cut and dried.

Still think Lambie is a #15 ….better than Ludick as well !!Just hope Sharks dont confuse another good youngster by playing him all over the place. Ja Lambie is good but at 15 he is a serious player . Why dont the Sharks give Guy Cronje a run @ 10 ?? Sharks looking quite good but think that 12/13 is the weakness.
WP should give the Bulle a good klap at Newlands!! Leopards exposed the Bulls with a bit of pace ……sign of the times , ball in hand and keep possesion .Boks can learn from Currie Cup , dont kick all the ball away ….

@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-12: I think its open season!! Personally I think WP should pick him up. After next year we will be a bit short on wings. Habana is leaving after 2011, Aplon is getting on in age. Mapoe will fit in perfectly at Province.

    @Duncan(Duncan)-14: Two questions;

    1. Have you been reading all the articles about Lambie’s positional preferences ?

    2. Did you have the opportunity to watch him being interviewed after the Cheetahs game ?

If not – let me update you so that you, and the other 10 Million people who cant get it out of their head can rest…

    1. Lambie wants to play closer to the ball. His ultimate goal was to play Nr 10 (a position that he has played before). His move was probably expedited by the unexpected injury to Ruan Pienaar, but Lambie is as happy as a pig in the proverbial. And so is his dad.

    2. For those who are unable to read (which I think is the case seeing as most are too dumb to get this idea out of their heads and keep harping on it) – Lambie said himself after the Cheetahs game that he enjoyed the challenge of playing in different positions and found it very exciting.

So – relax – nobody is messing anyone around.

Its interesting how the Sharks are always pinged for this. How many different positions has Francois Hougaard played for the Bulls ?

@Duncan(Duncan)-14: In addition to this – There is only one big challenge facing Lambie for the future and that is when he gets to the Springbok team.

Because much like Francois Steyn, the kid is so talented that in maximum 2 years time I predict Patrick Lambie will be SAs best option at 10, 12 and 15. I would be prepared to put serious money on that.

A MASSIVE find for the Sharks. And that is the only reason supporters of other franchises will disagree with me. Because they are trying to convince themselves – not anyone else. They know very well what this means for the Sharks. If we could win 7 of our last 8 Super 14 games without a decent flyhalf including klapping one of the finalists…I mean – do the sums yourself.

Another brilliant thing is that Lambie’s dad is probably the biggest Sharks supporter on the planet. Sharks are a religion in the Lambie household…so, we got him….sorry for the rest.

reckon the bull’s fans (and many others) on this site are being duplicitous and speaking with forked tongues from the other side of their faces…

reading the comments over the last few days… they ‘humbly’ say that the bulls are the underdogs… we’re missing our key players… not the same without this guy or that guy… wp gonna take this one… etc etc…

yet… if you look at the poll results…

the bulls are OVERWHELMING favourites for this Saturday’s clash… i mean… according to the poll the bulls just have to pitch up and take it by 15 points…

well… let’s just hope Province get on the scoreboard… maybe… if we’re lucky… and the ref favours us… we can hold the bulls to under 50 points… and claim a moral victory…
