Botha blow for Bulls
Gary Botha could miss the rest of the Currie Cup after suffering a knee injury in the Bulls’ 15-12 defeat against Western Province last Saturday.
The hooker injured medial ligaments in his knee during the first half and was replaced by Bandise Maku. The extent of Botha’s injury will be confirmed on Monday.
Loose forwards Dewald Potgieter and Derick Kuun are also injury concerns heading into the Bulls’ next fixture against Griquas on Friday.

Not to worry, Bantjes in for Gary, Okkie in for Kuun, and CJ in for Potties. Bantjes is better than Chiliboy in anyway.

Was actually relieved to see Gary leave the field on Saturday. Sympathy on the injury, but Gary looked like he was not there to play rugby. In the 10 odd minutes he was on the field he seemed to want to get involved more in off the ball incidents than actually playing rugby.

@Craven(Craven)-2:
The scrum is a pressure cooker. Rather not criticize. As much blame could be heaped on Tiaan and Brok.
16 Aug 2010, 07:23 am
Yeah, I kinda agree. Glad to see him leave the field.
Well done Province. Your Willem was better than our JLP. Only difference in the game IMO.

@UnbeataBULL(UnbeataBULL)-4:
We switched captains twice with injuries.
16 Aug 2010, 08:07 am
He looked injured when he started the game. Why did they play him ? he was nothing in the few mins he played cos of his injury and only a disruption as they had to change cappies a few times.

Goeie more almal.
Baie geluk aan die Wp manne – ek het nou nie die game gesien nie maar smaak my die Bulle was nooit in die game nie.

@Agile T*t-Tyrant(Anairetes agilis)-3: Top of the morning to you.
16 Aug 2010, 08:20 am
@Agile T*t-Tyrant(Anairetes agilis)-5: Is that why your team lost.
16 Aug 2010, 08:24 am
firstly… congratulations to the lions… great win over the cheetahs… mitchell definitely making a positive contribution to lions rugby…
well done to the sharks… playing great rugby…
well done to wp… not a pretty win but a win nonetheless… grinding out a result over the bulls is a significant result IMO… normally these games would go the other way…
well done willem de waal… very cool under pressure and the difference between the two teams…
well done to brok for his game and man of the match… the guy got through an enormous amount of work in the loose… and was solid in the scrums… great game…
but my man of the match would’ve been paul bosch… i think he had a huge game in midfield… defensively this guy in as solid as table mountain… reckon he and JdJ will be our bok centres post-wc11…
tim whitehead also played well… koster too… good to see him get stuck in…
pieter louw was also excellent… he’s right up there with the best fetchers in sa…
for those who knock john smit for being outta shape… why no comments on gary botha…? the way his gut was hanging out at bind-time said all you need to hear about what sort of shape he is in… (not…)
also looks to me like GvdH is on roids… hell, even in the S14 he was a skinny schoolboy… now he’s so pumped up they could play him in the forwards…
16 Aug 2010, 08:25 am
i was at the game….like an old fashioned test match….what brilliant defence by bulls in 1 st half…..
This game could of gone either way…..well done bulls for toughing it out.
I would say wp had the better of the 1 st half….2nd half very tense!
Great to see the wp u 21 s and u 19 s winning as well….
16 Aug 2010, 08:25 am
@Agile T*t-Tyrant(Anairetes agilis)-1: Yeah but not Gary. Although that’s not saying too much…..
16 Aug 2010, 08:27 am
@ufo(ufo)-10: Brok was fantastic! I also like Paul Bosch.
And Juandre Kruger….what a player!
16 Aug 2010, 08:27 am
@grant10(grant10)-11: All sides still unbeaten in their comp’s so far this season….
16 Aug 2010, 08:30 am
@Staal(Staal)-7:
thanks staal…
it was a game in which both teams put in really impressive defensive efforts… bulls in the first half, wp in second… pretty much blunted each other’s attack…
bulls were definitely in it… teams very evenly matched… was relieved that province pulled it out… could just have easily been the bulls game…
16 Aug 2010, 08:32 am
@grant10(grant10)-13:
hey grant… yeah… they played well…
juandre kruger is a good one for sure… bulls lucky to have him….
16 Aug 2010, 08:36 am
bulls defend like new zealand, spoiling tactics at the ruck and marius jonker kept offering warnings…
Even derrick kuun said to marius ‘OK, laaste een’ even before marius finished warning the player.
16 Aug 2010, 08:54 am
@Transformation(Transformation)-17: I agree totally with you, it was like watching NZ defend, I was once again reaching boiling point with Marius.
16 Aug 2010, 08:59 am
What I couldn’t believe was the penalty count against the team, Bulls 11 WP 8. I thought it would be Bulls 25 WP 8, but I suppose if you count how many times Marius called new advantage I could be right.
16 Aug 2010, 08:59 am
@Transformation(Transformation)-17: that was for a late tackle rather than ruck infringements.
16 Aug 2010, 09:09 am
@Kea-Cat(KEA)-19: I couldn;t understand the whole 5 minute advantage thing. Really confuses me.
16 Aug 2010, 09:22 am
Morning all. Was a good game on Saturday. One can’t really expect a flowing, running game with the amount of huge hits put on by both teams. It was hard, it was tiring, and it wasn’t pretty.
I do think the Bulls were lucky to have only received one yelow card, as there were numerous occasions in their 22 when Marius Jonker could’ve dished out another 1 or 2.
Very proud of the Province boys winning a close one against the Bulls.
Hope they put in a good effort on the training ground this week. The Sharks are gonna be very hard to beat in Dbn, especially with the likes of Beast and Bissy returning.
16 Aug 2010, 09:37 am
@Transformation(Transformation)-17:
that was good captaincy by kuun…
but i agree with you… jonker’s perfomance reminded my of roland’s for the boks… but don’t see too many people complaining about it…
hmmmm….?
16 Aug 2010, 09:46 am
ek sê weer – ek het nie die game gesien nie maar as jul Wp ouens met ‘n wen kla oor die ref dan weet ek nie so mooi nie!!!
los die ref uit man…………………
you win some – you lose some….
I hope JJ Engelbrecht gets a start this weekend. Juries butchered 3 scoring opportunities, and looks caught in 2 minds most of the time.
We’ll have to make better use of our opportunities and visits to the 22. Even if it means taking the 3, instead of kicking into touch for a lineout
16 Aug 2010, 10:34 am
@Frankly speaking(Frankly speaking)-26: Yip, I like the look of JJ, and Fabian looks out of sorts. I actually expected much more from him.
16 Aug 2010, 10:36 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-25: @Staal(Staal)-24:
not moaning… we butchered some stuff… made some bad decisions… bulls defended well… so did we…
was just commenting on the fact that Jonker gave so many final warnings… he sounded pretty much like Roland to McCaw…
agree with you StormersBud… if we play like that against the Sharks… we’re gonna struggle… i’m happy it was a tight game… better than an easy win the week before playing the sharks…
16 Aug 2010, 10:56 am
@Staal(Staal)-24: Well if the Bulls aren’t complaining about the ref after a loss, then you must know………….
16 Aug 2010, 11:07 am
@ufo(ufo)-28: Yes, rather a wake up call than an easy win leading up to the top of the table clash i guess. Hope there are no injuries (to our team)….
I agree with you on the final warnings thing…
16 Aug 2010, 11:17 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-30:
yeah… hope Duane’s shoulder is okay… i thought he’d broken his collar-bone… but must’ve just twinged a nerve or something… can stiffen up though and give problems for a few days… hope he makes it…
16 Aug 2010, 11:20 am
@ufo(ufo)-31: yes, they will need his physicality against an in-form Willem Alberts. He definately is our enforcer in the side….
16 Aug 2010, 13:00 pm
The WP loosies were ver good again, Louw and Vermeulen very solid but Koster was brilliant.
Made some early snipes, looked pretty dangerous with ball in hand and his work rate was immense. Made 20-25 tackles I reckon.
Future Bok.
16 Aug 2010, 13:59 pm
@WP_(WP_)-33: I dont think you have to worry, after all;
1. WP beat the Super 14 champions this weekend, and;
2. We have all seen in the media how WP are the new dominating force in SA rugby, so…
Dont be concerned, nobody has mentioned the Sharks once when it comes to ‘dominating’. Just like they didn’t give the 3 point losing Bulls a hope in Cape Town either.
This should be a walkover – just like it was in the Super 14.
16 Aug 2010, 14:08 pm
DUSKY
Marius made a meal of it…he tried his best again to get WP to lose to his favs….but no….this time we could match and even better the phisical stuff and after that no matter how many warnings he gave the bulls…we stil won the game…….things are changing…wheter the Sharks or Bulls like it or not…..
WP is busy banishing all the light five nonsense and establishing a different outlook from the media, supporters, coaches, players etc…..
In the past it was very easy for refs like Willie Doos to let WP lose in the S14 like in 2008 at Newlands….I was there and we scored 2 tries that he did not give!!! And Habanas try that day was not a try.
All and all….I’m happy with what is going on in the Cape……but please……never give us Marius Whanker when we play the Bulls or Freestate….hell any team for that matter!
16 Aug 2010, 14:20 pm
@Hoops(Hoops)-35: Was Habana’s try on the 19th May 2007 a try ?
Rub of the green buddy, and I think the Sharks lost more matches with Doos as ref that any other referee.
Who is the ref this weekend ?
And what’s changing ? Where were WP last year at this stage of the competition ? And where were the Sharks, and where were the Bulls ? I dare you to look it up ?
Who won the Currie Cup in the end ? The Bulls. All the rest can hope for is that the Bulls dont make a semi-final (highly unlikely), because when they add their Springboks – it will be back to reality for the rest of the teams. Including WP.
Nothing has changed. Same old, same old.
16 Aug 2010, 16:32 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-36:
No it was not!
And alot changed!
Including the fact that FDP will be out for the Bulls…look at the boks……when he is gone…..alot is lost……
Doos came in to Help the Sharks with a Yellow in that S14 my friend…….when even Muller said he did not know how Schalk got yellow….when Doos was standing on the other side of the field when the incedent happenned!
Jonker cost us dearly last year when he got the cheetahs back in the CC with his 18-2 penalties against us in a game when we scored 4 tries in 30 min!!!!
17 Aug 2010, 10:46 am
@WP_(WP_)-33: Hey I was right!
Koster made 24 tackles, the most of anyone in the game.
According to ruggastats (Agile ***)
Also, the 2nd most ball carries of the WP side (11) to Vermeulen’s 14
Have your say
