Goosen masterclass sinks Paul Roos

Johan Goosen scored 36 points in Grey College’s 41-29 win against Paul Roos in Bloemfontein.

The SA Schools flyhalf kicked nine penalties, two from 70m, as Grey were outscored by four tries to two. Goosen scored one of his side’s tries and slotted two conversions.

Captain and centre William Small-Smith scored Grey’s other try (in the last move of the match), with Paul Roos’s five-pointers coming from prop Steven Kitshoff, centre Thsothso Mbovane and wing JP Lewis. Stephan van der Merwe kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Grey built up an early 16-0 lead but a Paul Roos fightback made it 16-15 at the break.

Not sure anybody still commenting on this but…
watched the game on FNB Classic Clashes, looked like a helluva match!
I must say it really seemed like the ref was nailing Paul Roos, any comment from those who were there? Was it deserved?
Also, that Paul Roos outside centre – that is talent, haven’t seen a step like that since Gibbs in 92

Sjoe, this response comes 6 months after Marino’s question, anyway – yes Paul Roos physically dominated Grey and were technically more astute as well. The referee for that match sadly brought the game into serious disrepute with some highly questionable decisions that went against Paul Roos.
It became apparent to all that were there that Goosen’s boot was firing well – the ref knowing this blew Paul Roos all over the park.A pushover try by Paul Roos that was scored by their hooker in the dying minutes of the game was not televised (mysteriously)was initally ok’d by the linesman – then disallowed my the freestate union referee, handing Grey penalties to keep the scoreboard ticking over for them as Paul Roos seemed to running them ragged. The scoreboard was not a true reflection of the game as the result should’ve read 36-16 in Paul Roos’s favour.
