Province: Rassie’s going nowhere

Western Province have refuted claims that Rassie Erasmus will be taking up a director of rugby post with SA Rugby.

A article published in the Cape Argus suggested Erasmus was contemplating the move, but WP have responded by reminding all parties concerned that Erasmus is contracted to the Cape union until 2012.

‘Rassie is committed to WP Rugby and is a valued and respected member of the coaching staff. The rumours of a rift and an imminent move have absolutely no basis,’ said Rob Wagner, MD of WP Rugby.

AfriForum: Absa lied about race in rugby

Civil rights group AfriForum says it has evidence contradicting Absa’s claim that it did not put pressure on Saru to increase black representivity in the Currie Cup.

According to AfriForum, Absa deputy CEO Louis von Zeuner sent the following SMS to Saru president Regan Hoskins, after the Currie Cup matches played on 11 September: ‘Regan, I think you should write to the major unions on black players -judging from today’s games Lions 2, Bulls 1, Cheetahs 2 – they are not respecting the spirit and goals of transformation. Louis.’

Hoskins, in a Saru press release, said: ‘SA Rugby confirms that at no time did Absa threaten to withdraw sponsorship money or suggested that quotas be instituted or was in any way prescriptive about the composition of the teams.’

Cheetahs want to keep Basson

The Cheetahs’ Super Rugby franchise may take legal action against the Griqualand West Rugby Union after the latter failed to consult with them before allowing Bok wing Bjorn Basson to join the Blue Bulls.

‘In light of what has happened, the Cheetahs’ executive committee gave approval for us to seek legal advice on the matter,’ franchise MD Harold Verster told Sport24. ‘As soon as we have received the necessary recommendations there will be a special directors meeting where the findings, and the consequences thereof, will be discussed.’

These Cheetahs are becoming losers of note. First running to mommy Marinos to prevent as many Bulls Boks as possible from playing against them and now this. Their claim to fame is that they paid 60 percent of Bjorn’s S14 salary. Considering that they had exclusive acces to him during the S14 it is actually shocking that the cheapskates didnt pay his entire salary during the S14 and actually expected poor little Griquas to cover the remaining 40 percent.

Anyway, the Bulls followed the right procedure. The Cheetahs just have to live with it.

I reckon old Harold is getting a bit dizzy from the thrill of legal action. Suing for emotional distress if another team beats the Cheetahs will probably be next on his agenda.

As someone mentioned over twitter, Harold (who reminds me more and more of that character in the movie Harold and Kumar…) must have been a huge LA Law fan, he seems to show more interest in court room battles than rugby battles…

Anycase, Cheetahs can only really take legal action against Griquas, they have no case against the Bulls.

Bulls look like their depth will be very good for next s15.

concerned about 13 though….Jaco is ok and Dippenaar hasn’t shown me much yet. Maybe they’d consider Watermeyer at 12 with Olivier at 13?

@Tacitus(Tacitus)-2: Agree , Besides what did they expect ? Must he play another season for them now that they paid 60% of his salary for this year ? He is leaving after the season ends so they have no say in what happens to him. Griquas and not cheetahs invested in him from the beginning and they are being paid for the early release , its exactly how things should be. Cheetahs the way I see it had no part of the players development and invested nothing , instead they just rented him for a few weeks.

Cheetahs are going a bit too far with this.

    Bob Skinstad – Superrugby

Is there too much bloat to render the new look Super 15 something to look forward to?

I like big name, intra country, intense, derbies, they show the best players in their prime, battling for contention and position, in the age old rivalries that we have grown accustomed to – often they are just before tours and selections too, adding a sense of bite to the occasion, with bragging rights and national colours up for grabs.

I write all this because I think that is what the new Super Rugby (terrible logo) format is trying to use as a showpiece to start the tournament, and I praise the organisers for that, but then where does it head ? Down the veritible rabbit hole of quasi qualifying, match up murdering mince meat in the middle.

I still can’t work out whether the pseudo quarter finals are a boon or a balls up, as they might be teams from the same country, re-hashing what happened early on and stopping the possibility of the winners having to play all the good, in form teams or their vanquishers. It does seem a bit odd.

My other worry is that of the domestic competitions. For example, if we see the Cheetahs play the Sharks in the not so super new Super 15, possibly twice, why does that help in any way the jersey changed, same team match up that we were waiting for during our currently already exciting domestic match up filled, Currie Cup ? Have we not just given away all the home derby value to a tournament that needs our traditional rivalries to keep it alive and in so doing , thrown the baby out with the proverbial bath water ?

Where do we ( SARU ) negotiate from here ?

I think we should have kept our fantastic domestic Currie Cup – thrown out the Vodacom competition, and played like the H Cup in Europe – a game every fortnight or month or so, that was Super 15 only. Allow the local teams to keep building their squads, and pedigrees, match them up against each other domestically mostly, and only again through qualification where possible – and then lead up toward a grand finale, at the end of the domestic season, a la H Cup that sees the finals played within the same months, so that teams can keep their squads to defend their national club championships as well as the international ones.

This way – all we as South Africans have done, with the lions share of interest that we had, is give those prize matches away and lose focus on the Currie Cup, which is what made us great anyway, now the teams will play their stars for the Sanzar comps ( Super and tri/quad nations), then rest their stars, on insistence from SA rugby, for the Currie Cup – before playing an under strength team on the end of year tour – it seems to me that it all starts with a bang and ends with a whimper.

DID I mention that the global season of football has helped them (FIFA/UEFA) garner the biggest ever audience growth figures of the sport over the last few domestic and international seasons, hmmm, when do they play Champions League football again, oh during the domestic season off weekends/fixtures you say, and end it all with a grand finale ? One global season ? What a good idea !

    Dear Harold Verster:

Lawyers Fees + 60% of Bjorn basson + 100% Lionel Mapoe = Rx

Now use Rx to go buy a flyhalf. Focus on issues at hand…..Sias and Louis will be useless in S15.
