Currie Cup latest (Thurs)

Keo.co.za brings you the news from the Currie Cup.

Smit snubs Lions

John Smit has committed to the Sharks after turning down a lucrative offer from the Lions.

Smith has re-signed for the coastal union and will play for them in the 2011 Super Rugby competition. Insiders say Smit was offered a large sum to join the Lions, but turned the offer down.

The Bok captain is currently recovering from an operation and will not feature in the Currie Cup play-offs or South Africa’s Grand Slam Tour.

Van Heerden lends Lions bite

Former Bok flanker Wikus van Heerden will start against the Sharks.

Josh Strauss moves to No 8 to accommodate Van Heerden while Warren Whiteley falls out of the match 22.

Lions – 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Jannie Boshoff, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Doppies La Grange, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Joshua Strauss, 7 Wikus van Heerden, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe (c), 4 George Earle, 3 Ross Geldenhuys, 2 Martin Bezuidenhout, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.
Subs: 16 Edgar Marutlulle, 17 Wayne Swart, 18 Johan Snyman, 19 Trevor Hall, 20 JP Joubert, 21 Burton Francis, 22 Deon van Rensburg.

Sharks stay the same

John Plumtree has been afforded the luxury of maintaining the same 22 for the Sharks match against the Lions.

Without any injuries in the squad, Plumtree admitted it was the first time in a while he didn’t have to worry about making any changes for the contest at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Sharks – 15. Louis Ludik , 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. Stefan Terblanche (c), 12. Andries Strauss, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 10. Patrick Lambie, 9. Charl McLeod, 8. Ryan Kankowski, 7. Willem Alberts, 6. Keegan Daniel, 5. Alistair Hargreaves, 4. Steven Sykes, 3. Eugene van Staden, 2. Craig Burden, 1. Patric Cilliers
Subs: 16. Kyle Cooper, 17. Wiehahn Herbst, 18. Michael Rhodes, 19. Jacques Botes , 20. Rory Kockott, 21. Andre Pretorius, 22. Riaan Swanepoel.

Mapoe worth a million plus

The Cheetahs have put a R1.5 million price tag on Lionel Mapoe.

Despite losing the legal battle to the Cheetahs, Mapoe still refuses to return to Bloemfontein and the Sharks are willing to pay a transfer fee.

However, the Cheetahs, who initially said they won’t accept any transfer fees for the wing, have demanded R1.5 million. This is R500 000 more than what the Bulls paid for Griquas speedster Bjorn Basson.

Bulls did it by the book

The Bulls are confident that they signed wing Bjorn Basson legally from Griquas.

This was according to High Performance manager Ian Schwartz after the Cheetahs announced they will take legal action against Griquas as they were not communicated in the transfer process. The Cheetahs, who pay a part of Basson’s wages, want to keep the wing.

Schwartz believes there should be no reason why the transfer should be stopped as they did it legally. The Bulls paid R1 million for Basson, who will join them on 1 November.

Eagles threaten to strike…again

The SWD Eagles’ players have threatened to boycott Friday’s clash against the Valke unless they are paid.

The players are angry as Saru has stopped all its funding to the union until the political infighting is resolved. Without Saru’s funding, the Eagles can’t afford to pay all their players.

The Eagles are second on the First Division log and this weekend’s match in George is supposed to be broadcast on TV.

the cheetahs are now simply being greedy.

they were exploiting mapoe by paying him a pittance in comparison to his market value and now they are trying to prevent him making a living where he will be better remunerated by putting a ridiculously high transfer cost on him.

i like the cheetahs, always have. but it seems harold is a k no b.

Two boys are playing cricket on a field in Durban, when one is attacked
    by a vicious Rottweiler.

Thinking quickly, the other boy took his cricket bat and managed to
wedge it down the dog’s collar and twist, luckily breaking the dog’s
    neck and stopping its attack.

A reporter who was strolling by sees the incident, and rushes over to
    interview the boy.

“Young Sharks Fan Saves Friend From Vicious Animal,” he starts writing
    in his notebook.

“But I’m not a Sharks fan,” the little hero replied.

“Sorry, since we are in Durban , I just assumed you were,” said the
    reporter and starts again.

“Stormers Fan Rescues Friend from Horrific Attack,…” he continued
    writing in his notebook.

“I’m not a Stormers fan either!”, the boy said.”

“I assumed everyone in Durban was either for the Sharks or Stormers. So
what team DO you root for?” the reporter asked.

“I’m a Blue Bulls fan”, the child beamed.

The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes:

“Little F*cker from Pretoria Kills Beloved Family Pet.”

    Frankly

    good question.

    is deysel not a vrystaater?

point being, we actually have an academy but actively recruit.

    the lions have….well….fokkol really.

but it sounds like they may have finally woken up to the pro era judging by their attempts to buy everyone and their dog.

or maybe they have simply gone back to their original poaching ways…louis luyt ring a bell?

shamepies! it must have been so much easier when doc could use maties and the bulls and lions could use army as a recruiting platform.

 i can go all day but its pointless really. because i dont give a toss which sh i thole a player crawls out of as long as he helps the mighty SHARKS win more than they lose.

    ho ho ho.

  • 21.John Galt: Reply to this comment

@ Frankly Speaking 15 and RedLion 4. I’m glad you brought this up.

Sharks have 7 players in their current side that are homegrown…..
    Lwazi Mvovo
    Pat Lambie
    Ryan Kankowski
    Keegan Daniel
    Alastair Hargreaves
    Craig Burden
    Pat Cillier

    Your “Lions” have only THREE…..

    Elton Jantjies
    Jaco Taute
    Derrick Minnie

Also – I did a little research…..and it makes for interesting reading –

By far the largest amount of players that have been “pilfered” by your Lions are from KZN (is this not a beautiful case of the pot calling the kettle black?)

    Jannie Boshoff
    Waylon Murray
    Doppies La Grange
    Warren Whiteley
    George Earl

This is followed closely by WP

    Josh Strauss
    Franco vd Merwe
    Ross Geldenhuys
    JC Janse Van Rensburg

Then you have two boys from Eastern Cape

    Jano Vermaak
    Michael Killian

Lastly – a lone representative from the Free State (who obviously wasn’t good enough for the Sharks…lol)

    Martin Bezuidenhout

Even of it is as you say, that the lions have fokkol, it still a lot more than the Sharks have as you’ve bought a whole host of their players lately, and they’ve bought how many of yours? 1

You may as close the academy, save the cash, and put in a bid to rename Grey College to the Sharks Rugby Development Academy :)

  • 23.iori Yagami: Reply to this comment

These Transfer fee’s are great. They will most definetly help the smaller unions like Griquas and Cheetahs. Griquas just received R1 million for a player they paid nothing for and now the Cheetahs are going to receive R1.5 million for a player they brought up through the ranks. This will help them to develop more youngsters and sell them to the bigger unions for large sums of money. It will strengthen the smaller unions financially which in turn will strengthen their structures which in turn will strengthen their quality of players.

Frankly Squeakings question @15 was really naive considering how many players in the Lions side arent from there.

I personally have never had a problem with it, its the professional era and players will gravitate toward where
    a) they get remunerated accordingly and
    b) their skill will be most efficiently used.

You still don’t seem to get it, though. Being born in, say Mosselbaai, but playing ALL your first class rugby in, say Witbank, doesn’t mean that the Pumas poached you from the Eagles. SARU committed to Kings
    2010-09-23 07:58

Cape Town – The South African Rugby
    Union (SARU) has reaffirmed its
commitment to the establishment of the
Southern Kings franchise in the Southern
    and Eastern Cape rugby regions.

The Executive Council of SARU met in
Newlands on Wednesday and appointed a
    subcommittee, consisting of the newly
appointed SARU chief executive Jurie Roux,
    Deputy President Mark Alexander and
    Southern Kings chief executive Stefan
Pretorius to finalise the Memorandum of
    Understanding between the three SEC
unions and SARU and the SEC franchise
    business plan.

    The subcommittee was instructed to
finalise the draft business plan within one
month and to present it to Saru at the next
    Executive Council meeting.

The presidents of Eastern Province, Border
and SWD met with the Executive Council
and during these deliberations SARU again
reaffirmed its commitment to establish a
franchise in the strategically important SEC
    region.

SARU president Oregan Hoskins praised the
positive manner in which these discussions
    took place.

“Our next step is to draft a comprehensive
business plan so that we can move
forward. The establishment of a franchise
in the SEC is a top priority for us and I am
delighted we are now starting to put
concrete steps in place to make this a
    reality,” explained Hoskins.

The Executive Council also approved a
Southern Kings proposal to play friendly
matches against the five South African
    franchises in 2011.

The SARU Exco also discussed the issue of
transformation at length. SARU is not happy
with the current pace of transformation
and the issue was referred to its
    Transformation Committee for further
    deliberations.

    “The Executive Council agreed unanimously
that we must tackle the issue of
transformation aggressively and in a more
    urgent manner. We discussed several
options in this regard, but in order for us
take decisive steps, we decided to refer it
    to our Transformation Committee for
    further deliberations,” said Hoskins.

    From Rugby365

John Smit’s season-ending injury means there will be a new skipper in charge when the Springbok ship sets sail for Europe later this year. rugby365.com’s Timmy Hancox casts his eye over the potential Bok captaincy candidates.

Whilst Smit’s injury will give the long-time Bok captain a well-earned – and necessary – resting period, it does suddenly leave Springbok coach Peter de Villiers with a serious conundrum; Victor Matfield aside, who is the next Bok skipper in waiting?

At the same time, recent reports have suggested that several of the senior members of the squad are likely to be rested after a long season and with a World Cup next year – all of which will no doubt complicate De Villiers’s plans; is rest important or do one of Matfield, Schalk Burger or Juan Smith need to cancel their holiday plans and head to home affairs to get their passports in order for a flight to Europe?

That said, there are also a number of candidates in the Currie Cup who have proven themselves to be excellent leaders.

Veterans Stefan Terblanché and Gary Botha are successful skippers for the Sharks and the Bulls, respectively, but are they good enough – or in Terblanche’s case, young enough – to warrant a place in the Bok mix?

World Cup-winning Bok coach Jake White once singled out Wikus van Heerden as Smit’s potential understudy as national captain, but Van Heerden has only just returned to full fitness for the Lions and is clearly short of a gallop to force his way into Bok contention.

New Ulster signing Johann Muller has had a taste of leading the Boks, and also done the job with aplomb for the Sharks, and could easily be one of the darkhorses in the race for the job – although De Villiers has not used him much during his coaching tenure.

But those potential candidates aside, all of whom have their own strengths and weaknesses, here are rugby365.com’s five possibles for the Bok captaincy:

    VICTOR MATFIELD:

    Pros:
    - A wealth of experience with over 100 Tests and the current second in command in the Bok set-up.
    - Matfield has led the Bulls to three Super 14 titles in the past four years – he is a leader, of that there is no doubt.

    Cons:
    - With the priority being the defence of the World Cup title next year, Matfield is one of the stalwarts in dire need of a rest to ensure he is peaking in New Zealand.
    - Also, whilst Matfield has enjoyed plenty of success as captain of the Bulls, that win in Dunedin aside (in 2008), he has not enjoyed as much success whilst in charge of the Boks.

    SCHALK BURGER:

    Pros:
    - He guided the Stormers to their best-ever Super Rugby finish this year (runners-up to the Bulls) and is well liked and respected in all rugby circles the world over.
    - Captaincy does not seem to affect his overall game – in fact, he seems to welcome the pressure of leadership.

    Cons:
    - Burger can be hot-headed at times and, sadly, is always a yellow-card candidate who may need a captain to calm him down – rather than the other way around.
    - He also needs rest after a very, very long year.

    JUAN SMITH:

    Pros:
    - Cool, calm and collected much of the time with a leadership style that can be assimilated to that of the legendary Gary Teichmann – preferring to lead thorough his actions with the view that less is more when it comes to talking.
    - He has the respect of his teammates – having been there and done it all in a Bok jersey.

    Cons:
    - Your best player doesn’t always make the best captain – will the weight of one of the toughest jobs in South African rugby affect his game? After all, captaining Free State is way different to captaining your country.
    - Does he have the personality to lead his country – especially when it comes to all the off-field commitments – and does he actually want the job?

    CHILIBOY RALEPELLE:

    Pros:
    - He has done the job before and is a player who has been earmarked as a potential Springbok captain in the future.
    - Ralepelle thrived under the leadership role at age-group level and has all the qualities to do a great job.

    Cons:
    - Bismarck du Plessis should be the starting hooker and is likely to be first choice ahead of Ralepelle on the tour.
    - Can his body hold up? Will he finish the tour – unlike last year when he limped home early?

    ANTON VAN ZYL:

    Pros:
    - Yes, he is a pick from left field, but his great work with Western Province indicates that he is one of the best captains in the country.
    - Fresh ideas and a fresh face could just be what the doctor ordered!

    Cons:
    - Is he good enough to warrant a starting spot in the Bok line-up?
    - No Springbok experience – his first Test in charge would also be his debut for his country.

    Grant

I actually agree with you. As you know I’m a big JS fan, but what if this is the end? We need to know what our options are. We also need some more experience in the depth positions, like flyhalf, hooker (esp. if Bissie isn’t fit), and the tour is a good way of introducing them in a less “Smit-like” environment.

But personally I’m no longer a PDV fan. Playing our players like he did, overplaying them in spite of knowing how much over the limit they already were was too much for me. That was a very unprofessional move, willing to sacrifice for a short term result that didn’t happen anyway.

I think he’ll take VIC with him, I just don’t see him having another plan at this stage of the game. Maybe he’ll surprise me but that’s ok. I’ll hapily eat my words

Ethnic labelling still part of life in SA –
    Swartz

    2010/09/23
    Khanyi Ndabeni

RACIAL or ethnic labelling is still a part of
everyday life in South Africa, Nelson
    Mandela Metropolitan University vice-
chancellor Prof Derrick Swartz said in Port
    Elizabeth last night.

This was despite the clearest commitment to
create a non-racial, democratic society as
envisaged in the Constitution, he said in a
public lecture at the Red Location Museum. It
was part of the museum ’s series of Heritage
    Month debates.

Touching on South Africa’s racial history,
    Swartz described multiculturalism as the
    recognition, acceptance and promotion of
culturally diverse social norms in public
    institutional life.

    “The association of multiculturalism with
apartheid might seem odd, if not perverse
at first sight, given their starkly different
    aims.

“Apartheid was based on the separation of
people. It was conceived as culturally and
socially incompatible for them to exist
    within the same geographical and
    institutional spaces. Multiculturalism is an
idea born of an expressed commitment to
enjoin cultural popularity within the same
    spatial and institutional contexts. Their
political motives are quite different, ” Swartz
    told the audience.

Since 1994, he said, the problem with group
identity was whether its purpose was to
represent individual life choices and beliefs
in all aspects of identity, and if the
autonomy of the individual was subsumed
    under a group.

“This presents a significant problem if the
bases of the assumed group formation are
based on ‘racial’ grounds, seen as political
communities. Not only would this reinforce
what many consider to be a relic of racist
19th century evolutionary biology – the
idea that there actually exist different ‘races’
    – but it would also politicise these groups
    into political communities.

“This is best illustrated in our current use of
ethnic categories as legal categories of
    social recognition. These categories have
been inherited from the apartheid era. They
are now used as not only markers of social
recognition, but as indicators of social
    advantage or disadvantage.”

He said while there was ample evidence that
    affirmative action and equity measures
taken in the past 16 years had hugely
    shifted the demographic patterns of
    employment and resource distribution to
    those previously discriminated against,
most public and many private institutions
did not look to function along the same
racially defined lines as in the past.

“Yet theses advances cannot be disputed.
The use of these categories has also tended
to reinforce group identities that make
    nation-building deeply problematic, ” Swartz
    said.
