Rovers crowned club kings

College Rovers won the National Club Champs for the first time when they shocked Maties 24-15 on Friday.

For the KZN champions, it was a case of third time lucky after they had lost the two previous finals they had appeared in, in 2006 and 2008. It was also the second year running that an open club – after Hamilton in 2009 – had beaten a Varsity Cup team in the Club Champs final.

It was the first time in 30 years that Maties had lost in the final. Their eight-match unbeaten streak in deciders was broken by a committed Rovers side whose defence, which was their hallmark throughout the tournament, again proved to be impenetrable.

Flyhalf Wesley Dunlop, one of the standout players during the week-long tournament, was again magnificent, kicking a conversion, three penalties and a drop goal to dash the Stellenbosch students’ dreams of an unprecedented 13th title.

wow, that’s a bit of a poke in the eye with a blunt stick for the mockers of natal rugby.

yes, natal is where it is at my friends.

not even a countrywide recruitment programme disguised as a varsity can help you capetonians.

The strength in KZN rugby is still evident. Looking good for the future.

@Great White Shark(Predawn)-9: Well its true what you said after school all the kids from the private schools will most likely end up in cpt . I know guys who make natal craven week sides and natal accademy sides go to cpt just becuase it has become a trendy place or becuase ukzn is so useless ,thats why people who complain about the sharks accademy and how it recruits are being a bit dof -any way dont froget that that rovers side was without rhodes downey and one or two other players -i was impressed with anton bresler and rudi kyle -and jodi jeneker
