Something special

Patrick Lambie is the future of South African rugby.

With the 19-year-old Sharks star set to tour with the Springboks in November, SA Rugby magazine looks at his rise to prominence and the debate surrounding where he should play.

Lambie himself says he is in no rush to pick a number, despite what happened to two other Sharks players – Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn – when they were labeled utility backs.

‘I’ve enjoyed 15, 12 and 10 and I don’t yet know which one I’m best at or which one I enjoy the most. But with a bit more time and experience I’ll be able to decide on a position, put my mind to it and stay there,’ he says.

‘I have honestly enjoyed all three positions, and maybe it helped that I played 12 after fullback before moving to 10, but the most important thing is that I’ve played a sequence of games in each position. I haven’t played one game here, one game there, and then gone back to the previous position.’

SA Rugby magazine also speaks to Sharks coach John Plumtree and former flyhalf Joel Stransky about Lambie’s future.

Also in the new issue:

– In what he calls his ‘most honest interview ever’, Luke Watson reflects on the mistakes he’s made, his controversial Springbok call up, and the move to Bath that has reinvigorated his career

– The Springboks let themselves down during the home leg of the Tri-Nations – on and off the field

Allister Coetzee or Heyneke Meyer will replace Peter de Villiers as Springbok coach. SA Rugby magazine examines the candidates’ credentials

– Former England centre Will Greenwood on how this year’s Tri-Nations launched a rugby revolution

Robbie Deans on the Wallabies’ progress, the new law interpretations, his relationship with Graham Henry and if he’d coach a South African side

– Why Richie McCaw is the most dominant rugby player on the planet

Lionel Mapoe says he left the Cheetahs because they betrayed him. We find out more from the winger and speak to Free State president Harold Verster and Sarpa CEO Piet Heymans.

– The Springbok Women will not be a force on the international stage until they are properly conditioned and the team is selected on merit

– The Bledisloe Cup provides a very different spectator experience to that of a Tri-Nations match involving the Springboks

– Several South African schools claim their players are being poached by other institutions. SA Rugby magazine investigates

– At the USA’s West Point military academy, rugby is considered the ideal preparation for the controlled chaos of the battlefield

    Pienaar

WOW Could you Exaggerate any more?!?!

Keep that up and we will have another Hougaard story!!

One Player is Never The Future of a Rugby Team, least not in South Africa! Brussow comes close though…

    McCaw however defies the odds..

A flyhalf the future of SA Rugby… Believe it when I see it..Every time they have some one they mess it up!

What do you think of Elgar Watts? Seeing that the Cheetahs are very short of FH options, maybe they should look in his direction, especially if Naas Olivier leaves for the bulls coz they’ll get no where with Louis Strydom…

Lambie has looked most effective at 12 from what I’ve seen.

eish , Lambie is a 15 …..finish and klaar !! The kid is gifted and has a great head on his shoulders . Not the best kicker but as a player world class. Jantjies is a better 10 , but has a problem …. that buttocks of his could become a problem , it seems to get biogger each weekend.

  • 209.Great White Shark: Reply to this comment

Jantjies hero is Januarie. He says he also wants to gain 150 kilograms and still get picked for every game because he’s ‘bleck’…

ha ha , I thought Ricky had his baby ??? Honestly its not a colour thing but Elton’s pumpkin buttocks could become a problem …..another Benny MaCarthy story !!

The future of SA rugby, I fail to understand how can you make such a statement just by looking and going by CC rugby, you do not make much sense Boet

Another 14 Lambies and we’d be able to take on the world again. He’s talented, motivated and was picked on his ability rather than his pigment. Now once he’s been coached in the kicking department we’ll have another great rugger player coming out of Sharks country.

    For now he’s just good.

‘The Springbok Women will not be a force on the international stage until they are properly conditioned and the team is selected on merit’

So, no different to the Springbok Men then…

The ‘Springbok’ women’s team could win a few pie eating contests though.

I’m not saying they’re fat but when they step on the scales it says, “No live stock please.”

    Div escapes the axe…again!

Divvy’s job is safe – for now.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers and his staff will remain intact ahead of the end-of-year tour following a review on Monday by a technical panel, although he will be getting some much needed help,/i>

elgar watts is heading back to boland next season.

if lambie is the future at this juncture, i am a little worried. sure the kid has got some serious talent, but he is untested at 10 on super rugby level. and his place kicking is poor.

if he is going to be playing 10 for the boks on EOYT, then we need another player to step up for goalkicks. this will alleviate some of the pressure that will be on his shoulders.

if we have to take lambie or jantjies on the EOYT, i would definitely go with lambie. it is too early for jantjies, at least we have seen lambie at 12 and 15 in super rugby.

  • 225.rangerman: Reply to this comment

@bloubulblog.co.za(bloubulblog)-224: no, we have only see lambie at 15 in superrugby.

neither elton nor lambie are worthy of the bs being heaped upon their shoulders as yet.

talents to be sure but many a bulletproof youngster became a wary veteran once lifes knocks got the better of him.

a little calm at this point will go a long way.

hope all the fame doesn’t go to his (Lambie’s) head! maybe the EOYT is to early 4 him?

  • 230.DT: Reply to this comment

No gents …..simple ….Lambie can play !! This kid has a head on his shoulders like a seasoned campaigner …..he needs to go the tour and be exposed to the Boks and get used to the pressures of being a Bok .In 4 years time he should be regarded as world class not just talented. The Aussies are doing it pretty well and with our hardened “old ballies” we couldnt beat them. Wake up SA ….its not about skop and moer !!

  • 231.TheBoksAreBack: Reply to this comment

@DT(Duncan)-230: Agree, Lambie is a good player with potential, and needs the EOYT experience.

  • 232.qc-oldboy: Reply to this comment

lambie and jantjies are great prospects for sa rugby.i strongly believe though that one of them should be included in the eoyt squad, just to give them a taste of test rugby..

wp’s lionel cronje is also one for the future

must be honest, I didn’t enjoy Rich’s article on Luke. Felt like it was a poor attempt to make people feel sorry for Watson which failed miserably. If I, a Watson fan can say that; I can only begin to imagine the agony everybody else felt reading that.

Also it was like there was an underlying tone that tries to pin Luke up against Cheeky, when I really don’t think that’s the case.

Just feel Keo, Simon or JC could have done a better job.
