Something special

Patrick Lambie is the future of South African rugby.

With the 19-year-old Sharks star set to tour with the Springboks in November, SA Rugby magazine looks at his rise to prominence and the debate surrounding where he should play.

Lambie himself says he is in no rush to pick a number, despite what happened to two other Sharks players – Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn – when they were labeled utility backs.

‘I’ve enjoyed 15, 12 and 10 and I don’t yet know which one I’m best at or which one I enjoy the most. But with a bit more time and experience I’ll be able to decide on a position, put my mind to it and stay there,’ he says.

‘I have honestly enjoyed all three positions, and maybe it helped that I played 12 after fullback before moving to 10, but the most important thing is that I’ve played a sequence of games in each position. I haven’t played one game here, one game there, and then gone back to the previous position.’

SA Rugby magazine also speaks to Sharks coach John Plumtree and former flyhalf Joel Stransky about Lambie’s future.

Also in the new issue:

– In what he calls his ‘most honest interview ever’, Luke Watson reflects on the mistakes he’s made, his controversial Springbok call up, and the move to Bath that has reinvigorated his career

– The Springboks let themselves down during the home leg of the Tri-Nations – on and off the field

Allister Coetzee or Heyneke Meyer will replace Peter de Villiers as Springbok coach. SA Rugby magazine examines the candidates’ credentials

– Former England centre Will Greenwood on how this year’s Tri-Nations launched a rugby revolution

Robbie Deans on the Wallabies’ progress, the new law interpretations, his relationship with Graham Henry and if he’d coach a South African side

– Why Richie McCaw is the most dominant rugby player on the planet

Lionel Mapoe says he left the Cheetahs because they betrayed him. We find out more from the winger and speak to Free State president Harold Verster and Sarpa CEO Piet Heymans.

– The Springbok Women will not be a force on the international stage until they are properly conditioned and the team is selected on merit

– The Bledisloe Cup provides a very different spectator experience to that of a Tri-Nations match involving the Springboks

– Several South African schools claim their players are being poached by other institutions. SA Rugby magazine investigates

– At the USA’s West Point military academy, rugby is considered the ideal preparation for the controlled chaos of the battlefield

@Mighty Horua(Mighty Horua)-7: Thats the reality of the SA rugy media. Thye have their prima-donnas who they will build up (Spies, F Steyn, Wynand, J Fourie and now Lambie).

while often taking pot-shots at guys like Elton and Adi with no factual basis. In one of Keo’s latests newsletter he said that Jantjies is not the future. did not offer any analysis. just said that he i snot the future. What rugby is he watching?

When are they going to put JDJ or EJ on the cover and blow smoke up their arses based on no facts (e.g. instilling fear in the opposition, talent, potential)

thats why we need a tribunal. For so-called journos like the ones at HSM.

What on earth has this issue to do with him, I wonder. The peopol thinks SAB is the only company making beer, bliksemse neandertal.

@moedeloos(moedeloos)-52: If you do not like the website or the mag, just don’t it and don’t visit the site.

I do not subscribe to the glorification of young players. It is the fruit of desperation. They inevitably buckle under the pressure of expectation. It happens the world over. Danny Cipriani of England springs to mind, as do our own Gaffie Du Toit, Derick Hougaard, Ruan Pienaar etc.

The fact is that it is impossible to judge whether a player will be successful at international level before he plays there. Youngsters should not be included in the team because they are seen as potential saviours. They must be allowed to play at CC, Super rugby level and our Springbok “A” – more matches have to be organized for this team.

It would be an injustice to any youngster to be included into the Bok setup while the current management fall from pillar to post. They have no plan and not the rugby credentials to coach an international team.

@Mighty Horua(Mighty Horua)-60: agreed. like they had Jaque Fourie on the cover while injured. At the same time Adi was playing his socks off.

Someone commented at the time that it eqautes to Ian thorpe being on the cover instead of Michael Phelps after the last olympics.

I have no problem with building guys up, if it is on facts and does not have an agenda.

Keo and his ilk is writing Lambie into the team. How many articles have we seen about him, compared to Jantjes who is almot redefining the way SA flyhalves play their rugby and the boy can kick (excl saturday ;-)

Do you honestly, for one moment, believe they would have the courage of conviction to close their ABSA accounts en masse? Did anyone think these frontier relics would bring the bank to its knees? What’s next? Perhaps a sweeping boycott of ESKOM, TELKOM, SPOORNET, TRANSNET and Adult World for their blatant BEE policies?

Spoke to a lawyer friend of mine a while ago.

You’d be astounded to learn how many millions these guys are raking in from taking the government to court on civil rights issues and winning court cases with legal cost judgements going against government.

They are able to retain crack legal teams at government’s expense.

Simply because government is clearly at fault in almost every case, and don’t have a leg to stand on.

Nevertheless, government stubbornly just keeps pushing these things through, and these legal eagles are poring over every detail, cherrypicking the ones where they have the best chance of winning the case, and the cycle repeats itself.

Anyway, why on earth would people not be willing to leave ABSA? I certaily am. But I want to do it as part of a concerted campaign, not on my lonesome where the impact is not felt.

I’m ready to go once the campaign is launched, however.

@moedeloos(moedeloos)-64: “redifining the way SA flyhalves play their rugby” PALEASE…how is running way behind the advantage line with runners aplenty outside you redifining the way flyhalves play?

Again, his success is part of a team dynamic where he is given options on the outside by his centres and wings. There are no forwards standing in his channel. That is what you call good coaching. Yes, his distribution is very accurate, his pace off the mark is adequate and his vision is good. I cannot comment on his defense because I have not yet studied that part of his game, but defense is secondary to attack in my book.

Lambie’s good performances at flyhalf are also the result of good coaching. His outside backs run straight and into space and it makes him look good – as it should. He does not do the little chips and back handed passes that Jantjies do, but his vision on the field is very good, as is his defense.

I reiterate that neither Jantjies nor Lambie should be in the Bok set-up right now. Let them play another season because it is a well documented phenomenon that youngsters who burst onto the scene battle in the next season when opposition coaches and analysts have found ways of countering their style of play. It is too early to name either of them as potential Boks.

Moreover, they will not be half as effective in a Bok game plan that revolves around forwards in the backline and a kick-chase game.

@moedeloos(moedeloos)-85: I do not have a problem with your argument that the KEO journo’s are biased as are the guys at Rugby Mag – essentially the same journo’s

However, we cannot expect them to change their spots. I got so tired of seeing Spies, M Steyn and Pienaar on the cover of their mag while the first two were absolutely exposed as the one dimensional players they are, and the latter was injured and buggering off overseas.

They are biased, but so am I and so are you. Maybe raising your voice for points on the other side of the rugby scale brings balance, who knows?

I am just very worried about our rugby as a whole. We have two NZ coaches in our domestic competition and their respective teams play the most attractive rugby and suddenly we see that we do have options at flyhalf. Not because of the brilliance – only – of these two youngsters, but because of a team structure that allows them to distribute and alternate their points of attack. How many good flyhalves have we destroyed with our one dimensional game plan of crash ball 12′s and kick chase?

My concern is compounded by the various calls from all sides of the spectrum to have one or both of these players included in the Bok set-up where their talents will go to waste and their yet fragile minds will be contaminated and confidence dented. I do not think that I will survive this travesty and believe you me, it will happen if they go on the EOYT. Both players have their critics and these will sharpen their knives, ready for the meal when the inevitable failure is dished up.

@moedeloos(moedeloos)-85: Lambie has at least been tested at S14 level where he excelled as a debutant. Jantjies has turned in a few good performances in a watered down Currie Cup. Neither should be hyped up this early, but if you’re going to choose one, surely Lambie is the more logical option than Jantjies, unless of course you consider racial dynamics more important than the facts.
