Something special

Patrick Lambie is the future of South African rugby.

With the 19-year-old Sharks star set to tour with the Springboks in November, SA Rugby magazine looks at his rise to prominence and the debate surrounding where he should play.

Lambie himself says he is in no rush to pick a number, despite what happened to two other Sharks players – Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn – when they were labeled utility backs.

‘I’ve enjoyed 15, 12 and 10 and I don’t yet know which one I’m best at or which one I enjoy the most. But with a bit more time and experience I’ll be able to decide on a position, put my mind to it and stay there,’ he says.

‘I have honestly enjoyed all three positions, and maybe it helped that I played 12 after fullback before moving to 10, but the most important thing is that I’ve played a sequence of games in each position. I haven’t played one game here, one game there, and then gone back to the previous position.’

SA Rugby magazine also speaks to Sharks coach John Plumtree and former flyhalf Joel Stransky about Lambie’s future.

Also in the new issue:

– In what he calls his ‘most honest interview ever’, Luke Watson reflects on the mistakes he’s made, his controversial Springbok call up, and the move to Bath that has reinvigorated his career

– The Springboks let themselves down during the home leg of the Tri-Nations – on and off the field

Allister Coetzee or Heyneke Meyer will replace Peter de Villiers as Springbok coach. SA Rugby magazine examines the candidates’ credentials

– Former England centre Will Greenwood on how this year’s Tri-Nations launched a rugby revolution

Robbie Deans on the Wallabies’ progress, the new law interpretations, his relationship with Graham Henry and if he’d coach a South African side

– Why Richie McCaw is the most dominant rugby player on the planet

Lionel Mapoe says he left the Cheetahs because they betrayed him. We find out more from the winger and speak to Free State president Harold Verster and Sarpa CEO Piet Heymans.

– The Springbok Women will not be a force on the international stage until they are properly conditioned and the team is selected on merit

– The Bledisloe Cup provides a very different spectator experience to that of a Tri-Nations match involving the Springboks

– Several South African schools claim their players are being poached by other institutions. SA Rugby magazine investigates

– At the USA’s West Point military academy, rugby is considered the ideal preparation for the controlled chaos of the battlefield

Really? How would you know? You a fly on the wall in their board meetings.

Corporates are generally obsessed with risk management. Something like this would bother them more than you think.

I look at the effort that goes into their latest marketing campaign on Supersport – proclaiming how they have supported the Currie Cup for 25 years, and looking back at the highlights.

Which market do you think they’re targeting with that? And each time that add is broadcast, most supporters laugh out loud and associate ABSA with all the negative stuff that’s going on at the moment.

All those hundreds of millions invested, and it is getting them more bad publicity than loyalty from their customer base. What a massive marketing disaster.

Believe me, they’re worried about it. You may not be. But they are.

People should be careful with Lambie.

Remember he is still learning his trade as a 10.

Jantjies on the other hand, has been playing there for years.

    @gunther(gunther)-110:

    Haha.

I think he is a special talent, but people must be careful to rush him too quickly in what is an extremely complex position which requires a complex array of skills, some of which only comes by knowing and understanding the position and recognition of patterns and situations which only comes with time.

The fact that he is doing well without experience just tells you how good a prospect he is, but the decision making for a flyhalf decreases dramatically at Super rugby and test level and this is where experience becomes vital in decision making.

  • 116.Sidewinder: Reply to this comment

@Mighty Horua(Mighty Horua)-105: So what? The fact that he has acquitted himself so well in so many positions so early in his career speaks volumes for his ability. The fact is that the hype surrounding Lambie is more justified than any surrounding Jantjies at the moment. This much should be obvious, even to the race-obsessed crybabies.

morne, ruaan and butch are still better options than these 2 youngsters.

nonetheless, both these kids look good but I would like to see how they are in their 2nd season once the fearlessness has gone and expectation has arrived.

Then you also misunderstand the point.

The point is showing we have clout. A specific action is seriously upsetting to a very significant interest group. General transformation initiatives are everywhere and is not what is being opposed here. Instead, interference in rugby is being resisted in this very specific campaign.

You’re going to need an audio element when you take your grievance to ABSA in the form of a tollie-tollie outside their head office. Might I suggest some vintage Schuster, or even just a clever re-write of “Jamblikke Visblikke”?

we better get him to investigate the controversy surrounding the new Julius Malema *** doll.

Its causing confusion amongst consumers who buy it and think that it is already inflated.

Little do they know, you have to read the fine print which tells you that, to inflate Julius, you nead to don a Black, Green and Yellow T-shirt and blow hot air up his trumpet repeatedly.

This has left some consumers with a bad taste in their mouth.

On the upside every Malema blow up doll purchased before the next SARS audit season comes with a free Range Rover Sport and Breitling wristwatch.

Also included in the offer are full BEE credentials for you and five of your relatives and/or closestg friends.

So let’s see who our star Bok flyhalves have been in the last 10 years:

    In no particular order:

    Braam van Straaten
    Andre Pretorius
    Jannie de Beer
    Butch James
    Morne Steyn

Let’s go back a bit further:

    Hennie le Roux
    Henry Honnibal
    Joel Stransky

I’m sure I’ve missed a few, but the point is that very few of those were younger than 25 when they produced match winning performances for the Boks. In fact, other than Morne Steyn, I think none of them were younger than 25.

So the Lambies and Jantjies of this world shouldn’t come into Bok contention for at least another 4 years or so.

Let them hone their trade at S15 level. Flyhalf is not a youngsters position like wing or even centre.
