Something special

Patrick Lambie is the future of South African rugby.
With the 19-year-old Sharks star set to tour with the Springboks in November, SA Rugby magazine looks at his rise to prominence and the debate surrounding where he should play.
Lambie himself says he is in no rush to pick a number, despite what happened to two other Sharks players – Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn – when they were labeled utility backs.
‘I’ve enjoyed 15, 12 and 10 and I don’t yet know which one I’m best at or which one I enjoy the most. But with a bit more time and experience I’ll be able to decide on a position, put my mind to it and stay there,’ he says.
‘I have honestly enjoyed all three positions, and maybe it helped that I played 12 after fullback before moving to 10, but the most important thing is that I’ve played a sequence of games in each position. I haven’t played one game here, one game there, and then gone back to the previous position.’
SA Rugby magazine also speaks to Sharks coach John Plumtree and former flyhalf Joel Stransky about Lambie’s future.
Also in the new issue:
– In what he calls his ‘most honest interview ever’, Luke Watson reflects on the mistakes he’s made, his controversial Springbok call up, and the move to Bath that has reinvigorated his career
– The Springboks let themselves down during the home leg of the Tri-Nations – on and off the field
– Allister Coetzee or Heyneke Meyer will replace Peter de Villiers as Springbok coach. SA Rugby magazine examines the candidates’ credentials
– Former England centre Will Greenwood on how this year’s Tri-Nations launched a rugby revolution
– Robbie Deans on the Wallabies’ progress, the new law interpretations, his relationship with Graham Henry and if he’d coach a South African side
– Why Richie McCaw is the most dominant rugby player on the planet
– Lionel Mapoe says he left the Cheetahs because they betrayed him. We find out more from the winger and speak to Free State president Harold Verster and Sarpa CEO Piet Heymans.
– The Springbok Women will not be a force on the international stage until they are properly conditioned and the team is selected on merit
– The Bledisloe Cup provides a very different spectator experience to that of a Tri-Nations match involving the Springboks
– Several South African schools claim their players are being poached by other institutions. SA Rugby magazine investigates
– At the USA’s West Point military academy, rugby is considered the ideal preparation for the controlled chaos of the battlefield

@Couchcoach(GI POT)-81: Your statement saying defense is secondary to attack….. Peter/Miur? is that you?

Love your work!

@Couchcoach(GI POT)-93: i agree with you on these guys should not be pushed into the national setup until after the RWC, but this obsession with wanting to play like Aus, NZ and France is crazy, jsut because it’s “entertaining” doesn’t mean we should adopt it, SA rugby is driven by a forward dominated game plan with strong defence, our strengths should be emphasized and appreciated, not admonished for something that is flashy, and in my opinion, not what rugby is about, the cricket scores coming out in tests these days are not good for the game in my opinion.

By the way, Goenta, speaking of Sharks supporters…
What’s the difference between Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga?
Only one’s got balls, and it’s not Bieber…

@MacToogie(MacToogie)-153: Agreed. As Heyneke Meyer puts it: There is only two types of rugby: Winning rugby and Losing rugby. I am entertained when my team wins.

Lambie had a poor game on Saturday by his standards ….but one cant judge him on just one poor performance. Imagine Lambie playing at 15 with a Michelak at 10 ?? Sharks backs in general were poor , with the exception of Mvovo (spelling ) and Mcleod ( spelling ) …….centre pairing is poor , Ludick very average and the Snail is a shocker !! Surely the youngster in the U21 , Mark Richards is a better player than Ndungane .
Jantjies is a better 10 than Lambie , but needs to lose a bit of weight , get a bit stronger , that buttocks of his certainly slows him down.

Why Richie McCaw is the most dominant rugby player on the planet
No comments everyone must agree.

@Mighty Horua(Mighty Horua)-133: That is quite true, the sharks have this innate ability to foock up a blokes career, they are the most consistent at stuffing guys around, and that includes the Cheetahs and lions. Lambie is brilliant at FB, but because they have NO clue what a FH is (they bought Skullet and Pretorius?????) they are going to mess this kid up too, im willing to put money on that.

@Slartibartfart(Slartifartfast)-176: the problem with these Kiwis is they are miserable in winning or losing, Saffas find the humorous side of losing eventually, these blokes just seem to be in a constant state of misery, must be their dog ugly women that makes them so, paper bags are sold in trucks loads in the land of the long white cloud i hear.

@NZINCHINA(NZINCHINA)-191:
Don’t want to explain it twice!
27 Sep 2010, 12:50 pm
@MacToogie(MacToogie)-153: Hi Mac, I do not for one moment profess or subscribe to an all out attacking game. However, when the situation presents itself to attack, you have to take it and then you have to have the personnel to make it work.
Any backline is completely dependent on the forwards dominating in both the set phases as well as the loose. That is why I believe that we need to stop looking towards individual players to ignite the spark. It is about the way that the team plays. We must get rid of forwards standing in the backline at first receiver and we must teach our backline players to run straight from depth. These are basics of backline play hat the Lions and the Sharks are perfecting.
In fact, unless WP get rid of carthorse De Waal, I may just, very secretly, start supporting these two sides because of their intelligent way of playing the game.
Oh, by the way, I am not **** or Pieter – do not have much time for either of them. My reference to attack over defense is that you seldom can teach a flyhalf to become more adventurous if he is pragmatic, but you can very easily teach a flashy player to defend. SA has turned the most brilliant rugby brains into bashing rhino’s for years now, so hence my habit of first assessing the players the attacking ability before his defensive ability. Defense is paramount – especially in test rugby and our defensive system is “in sy moer” thanks to PDV, Muir and Fool’s Gold
