Blitzboks bag bronze

Blitzboks bag bronze

The Springbok Sevens side beat England 17-14 in the third-place play-off at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The Boks began the day with a narrow 10-7 win over Scotland in the quarter-finals, but were outplayed by Australia in the semis. Mistakes and poor defence contributed to a 17-7 defeat, but it was important that they made it to the last four.

While they couldn’t contest the final, they could fight for a medal in the third-place play-off. A determined England outfit overpowered them initially, leading 14-5 at the break. But a late comeback ensured Paul Treu’s charges won the match and a bronze medal for South Africa.

In the final, New Zealand beat Australia 24-17. The Aussies led 17-7 at one stage, but the Kiwis proved irresistible in the second half.

Best sport at the Commonwealth Games – other than female hockey and netball.

Australia haven’t look great from what I have seen of them – they don’t appear to have a lot of pace, but they ran a very good England team close.

Should be an interesting game between South Africa and Australia.

I think SA won the commonwealth games gold (maybe silver?) in Manchester with a young Luke Watson in the team.

We were terrible against the Scots. The Crims looked the most impressive of the remaining teams.

    Mooi so!. Win this thing!

NZ have never come away with anything less than a gold medal at the last four Commonwealth Games. Unstoppable, now that Fiji are expelled from the body. (Well, Samoa might just keep them honest…)

Why don’t they have beach volleyball in this event/competition/games?

Not too bad considering our sevens players are mostly unknowns in the greater context of SA rugby, you would have thought that they could have sent a few star players to the CG seeing as it has a modicum of prestige.

    Hopefully the boys do well.

I hope that SA rugby send some big guns to the olympics in 2012, Jacques Fourie, Gio Aplon, JP Peterson, Habana, Spies etc. could be quite competitive.

The Team to beat is England.
They had the toughest Quarter Final and played very well. Had a couple of Refereeing decisions go there way.

SA not very impressive in Quarters. But I think Paul Treu was trying to rest some of his best.

NZ look good. But are they good enough to get past England?

Australia. A well ballanced team, and a Gold Medal would not surprise anyone.

    Very impressive players for SA:
    Benjamin.
    Cecil Africa.
    Menz.

    (forgive spelling).

All should be playing Super Rugby.

OZ try, SA defense not up to scratch, looks like OZ have it in the bag, 17-7 3 minutes to go.

Bet we lose to England as well, no medal.

  • 39.modawg: Reply to this comment

Oz dominating territory and possession, 2 minutes to go still 17-7 to OZ

  • 40.Panzer Chief: Reply to this comment

3.30 to go Sa behind by 10.

  • 41.modawg: Reply to this comment

England were hammered by NZ in the other semi, so we might still be in with a medal opportunity. The defense of SA way below par here, but Oz have some big boys.

    Game over OZ-NZ final.

    Congrats Oztralia, well deserved win.

In the 2012 London Olympics, SA should send some big guns. Juan Smith, J Fourie, Spies, Kanko, JP Petersen, J de Villiers etc.

Then we might have a chance, coz I’ll bet NZ will send their top players.
