Barritt’s smelling like roses

Barritt’s smelling like roses

Former Sharks centre Brad Barritt has been called up to the England squad as injury cover.

Prop David Wilson (sore back), former Free State flank Hendre Fourie (bruised ribs), lock Simon Shaw and Kiwi-born centre Riki Flutey (both calf) were injured over the past weekend and are in doubt for England’s Test against the All Blacks on 6 November. They will be treated and assessed by the England medical team in consultation with doctors from their clubs, but have in the meantime been replaced with prop Joe Marler, flanker Tom Wood, No 8 Dan Ward-Smith and Barritt.

Meanwhile, Jonny Wilkinson will undergo a scan on Tuesday after complaining of soreness in his left shoulder and could be replaced by Charlie Hodgson for the New Zealand game.

England also face the Wallabies, Samoa and Springboks in November.

He’s not good enough to be a Bok anyway, England can have him.

That’s a bit harsh, Trans. If you were treated the way he was treated by the Sharks, wouldn’t you have done the same?

Is my understanding of this article correct? Is Hendre Fourie an England candidate? If so, then it seems the rugby team is heading the same way as the cricket team (majority Saffa’s). What will be left for us to conquer? Football!!!

Dunno Xhosakid. The way Andries Strauss is playing currently I would go with him at 4.

Its amazing how average southern hemisphere players look so good playing in the northern hemisphere. Now england selecting a 30 year old South African, id be ashamed if i was English. They probably waiting until when the likes of Ernst Joubert qualifies for England duty too, so they can rush him straight into the team.

Barrit is MUCH better than adi jacobs. purely because barrit at least plays rugby. Jacobs has done nothing for 2 years (but he still makes boks..)

    1. Fourie
    2. de Villiers
    3. de Jough
    4. Olivier
    5. Strauss

    All still better than barrit..

SKW, what you smoking? Barritt is only 23 or 24, nowhere near 30.

  • 21.SKW: Reply to this comment

Doc, im talking about Hendrie Fourie bru.

  • 22.KevinRack: Reply to this comment

Barrit has great defensive oraganisations skills. He reads the game and organises the defence. Lacks speed but at a very early age he ran the Sharks backline. Highly rated but like Joe Pietersen he could see the writing on the wall for his future. Barrit is and was always better than WO but not the JDJ,JDV, JF.
Adi is very good attacking player but I think he is riding on past glories more than his current form.

Well if he runs out for england we shall see if he really is international class.

  • 23.The_Zulu: Reply to this comment

Barrit was first choice 12 when he left the sharks. Him and Waylon Murray formed a great pairing.
Adi only started playing regularly after he left.

Transformation @16: And you value the Sharks’ view on centres?

BTW, I do agree with you on Doppies.

But my point is that Andries is finishing really strongly

  • 25.motomouse: Reply to this comment

In fact if you go back and look at the game stats and performances during the 2006 and 2007 seasons you will see that Barritt was clearly the second best No 12 in South Africa (Frans Steyn had not yet played at 12) second only to Jean De Villiers.

Barritt was unfortunate to not be picked for the Boks during Jake White’s tender, for some reason “Wynand, I am a tiger until I play a test match Olivier” was selected ahead of him, how the hell that happened is beyond me but hey I am just a spectator.

Barritt is no traitor, he was let down by the Bok selectors, it was them who didn’t recognise his ability so he left to go somewhere he could be appreciated.

@25 – Agree with your semtiments. As much credit as JW gets, I also think there were some “bad” non-selections during his term of office i.e – WO ahead of Barritt, and some others.

England have it tough though… SA Samoa NZ and the Wallabies.
They should beat Samoa but they are going to get some heavy hits
from those lads…. Cant wait for these games to start!!!!

  • 30.mshiniwami: Reply to this comment

Barritt is a 12 Adi is a 13.2 different positions.

Barritt doesn’t even start for England.he Is behind Flutey/Gerathy/Tindall for 12 jersey.Flutley couldn’t even smell a 12 jersey at Hurricanes.

Barritt is solid on defence & communicates well.and did well in tandem with Murray.both have gone AWOL since.fact of the matter is Frans Steyn is/was a better 12 than Barritt & Jacobs a better 13 than Waylon.

  • 31.Big Hit: Reply to this comment

    15. it’s natural that if you have hundreds of pro players plying their trade overseas a few are going to rise to the top. Fourie is fourth choice openside, but like the first 3 has managed to injure himself so probably won’t get a game.

    30. Geraghty’s out of the picture now, Tindall is 13. With Flutey injured Barritt is behind Hape and Waldouck.

  • 32.Transformation: Reply to this comment

    30. mshiniwami(mshiniwami): you would think people who frequent a rugby blog would know that already

  • 33.mshiniwami: Reply to this comment

    BH

Ok.But why has England played Tindall at 13 for last 3-4yrs? He is clearly not a 13,not enough speed, skillset is suited for hit-it-up-channel 1/2 type 12 where he played in 2003.IMO he is past it anyway but if he should be played play him at 12.Hape the NZ rugby league import is below par and even be is above Barritt in pecking order.

  • 34.NZINCHINA: Reply to this comment

Flutey the kiwi is injured so you have another Kiwi in reserve makes you look like a fool doesn’t it?

  • 35.Big Hit: Reply to this comment

    33. Tindall plays like a crash-ball 12 but he’s actually always played 13 save for a couple of tests. Greenwood wore the 13 shirt while playing inside centre due to superstition after nearly dying on the pitch during the ’97 Lions tour to SA while playing in the No.12 shirt.

Barritt still has work to do for a start but he’ll get one eventually as it’s a real problem position which has almost become a game of musical chairs as about 10 players have appeared there since Catt at the ’07 World Cup incl. Flood, Barkley, Noon, Flutey, Turner-Hall, May, Geraghty, Erinle, Hape with none of them being able to nail it down.

    and you know it

  • 37.seamus: Reply to this comment

I wish him luck. He was poorly handled by the Boks.

It’s pointless comparing JDJ, JF and AJ with Barritt as he is a 12, not a 13. And as a 12, only JDV is better in SA – then and now.

  • 38.last movement: Reply to this comment

Sorry okes do not miss him. He would’ve joined the long list of undeserving springbok caps if he ever got one here. You can get emotional as you like, if we had a couple injuries he would be far down the list for a call up.

Good for you Bradley hopefully you will make it out there.

Barritt should have been picked by the Boks a while back cause he is that good, but Jake White was in charge and Barritt didn’t play for him in SA u/21, so no chance to be selected. No rather a brilliant (not) player like Meyer Bosman, fullback/flyhalf Francois Steyn, Wynand (only good for the Bulls) Olivier were better choices at 12 apparently.

Can’t blame him for going overseas and getting a chance to be picked on merit for England, earn big bucks and play against the best at test level.

What’s happened to all the best young Sharks of a few years ago, all gone. Barritt, Francois Steyn, Ruan Pienaar, Waylon Murray all gone away…
