Keo.co.za brings you the news from the Currie Cup.
WP to play ‘possession’ rugby
WP coach Allister Coetzee says keeping possession will be key in the final against the Sharks in Durban on Saturday.
Coetzee said the breakdown law interpretations will see the team with possession forcing penalties and scoring points.
‘You will be punished if you give away possession unnecessarily. The All Blacks’ style of play is based on keeping possession through phases,’ said Coetzee. ‘It’s important to make the right decisions in the right areas of the field. There is also a time and place for grubbers and aerial kicks. There is more than one way to play the game.’
Plumtree backs ‘matured’ Lambie
John Plumtree believes Pat Lambie will be able to handle the pressure when the Sharks take on WP in the final this weekend.
Twenty-year-old Lambie, who made his senior debut in the Super 14 this year, is set to start at pivot against Province on Saturday and will face opposite number Willem de Waal, who is 12-years older. Plumtree believes the young flyhalf will ‘do the job’ against WP.
‘He has matured a lot throughout the season. It was necessary for him to step up and do a job in the semi-final [against the Bulls]. And he did that. Now he has to do it again,’ said Plumtree.
Van Straaten to aid Sharks in 2011
Former Springbok kicking ace Braam van Straaten will assist the Sharks’ kickers during their pre-season preparations for the Super Rugby tournament.
Van Straaten is currently employed by the Australian Rugby Union as a kicking consultant to the Wallabies, but will spare some time to aid the Sharks. He will focus specifically on the kicking as the Durban-based franchise prepares for the 2011 Sanzar tournament.
Lions snap up Sharks pair
Sharks forwards Pat Cilliers and Michael Rhodes have been released from their contracts and have joined the Lions.
According to reports, Cilliers and Rhodes have fallen victim to the Sharks’ budget considerations that come into focus at this time of year. The signing of prop Eugene Van Staden will also limit Cilliers’ appearances in the coming Super Rugby competition, while Rhodes is at the back of the queue behind loose forwards like Jacques Botes, Jean Deysel, Keegan Daniel and Ryan Kankowski.
Cilliers and Rhodes are the latest players to join the Lions, who have already secured the services of Springbok hooker Bandise Maku.
De Wet to captain EP again
De Wet Barry will retain the captaincy when the EP Kings host the Pumas in the second leg of the promotion-relegation play-off on Friday.
Fullback Mzwandile Stick broke his collar bone in the 10th minute of the 36-36 first leg draw in Witbank after a tackle from Pumas loosehead prop Ronnie Uys. Centre Barry, who has skippered the team for most of the season, will lead the team in Port Elizabeth while Tiger Mangweni or Anthony Fenner will start in the No 15 jumper.

Lions can have Michael Rhodes, a bad buy in my opinion, over-rated player.
Whats this King Dragons stuff? What is the Dragons part supposed to mean?

plumtree has been very vocal since the end of the league part of the comp…
province mustn’t take the cheetahs lightly…
the sharks played like champs…
the sharks would rather die than lose…
it means everything to the sharks to win…
he’s happy joubert will be reffing…
doesn’t know if wp have learnt enough…
he’s been in finals all over the world…
blah di farking blah…
enough already… try and get through one day without telling the world how gstunningly fantastic you and the sharks are… we get it…
you’d rather player beyond the breakers of north beach… becuase you all walk on water…
at least alister coetzee has been far more circumspect and not running off at the mouth with a case verbal cholera…
