Boks latest – Beast misses training

Keo.co.za brings you the latest from the Springboks’ end-of-year tour.

Beast misses training – Beast Mtawarira sat out of Monday’s training session due to a knee injury incurred in the Boks’ defeat to Scotland. The decision on the prop’s availability will be made later in the week.

Should Mtawarira fail to pass fit, CJ van der Linde will be considered as a replacement. This would lead to Coenie Oosthuizen coming onto the Bok bench.

The team for Saturday’s Test is due to be named on Tuesday.

Poms buzzing ahead of Bok clash – England No 8 Nick Easter says his side is feeling confident about the coming tussle with the Springboks. England beat Australia two weeks ago, and despite a lacklustre showing against Samoa, he felt there were positives.

‘We’d created chances but had not nailed them,’ Easter wrote in his Daily Telegraph column. ‘We did in the second half. In many ways, we’ll get as much from this as we did from Australia. We’ll have to bring the best of both performances to beat South Africa.

‘I’ve played against them five times and lost the lot. England have lost their last six against them. Trust the Scots not to do us a favour. It’ll be a wounded Boks who come to Twickenham. It’ll be a full-blooded affair. It always is.

‘We want to finish on a high note. It would put a dampener on the autumn if we don’t manage to do that, difficult as it will be. We’ve got to make the most of these moments, all the more so as this is the last chance we get to clock a win against the southern hemisphere before the World Cup.

‘There’s a buzz in camp. We’re very much up for it.’

Matfield regrets poor tactics – Springbok captain Victor Matfield said his side employed the wrong approach and that contributed to a crushing loss to Scotland. The Boks tried to run the ball, even though atrociously stormy conditions prescribed a percentage approach.

‘There has been a lot of talk about us needing to be more expansive in our approach and maybe we paid too much attention to that,’ said Matfield. ‘These weren’t the right conditions to play expansively, and we made too many mistakes in our own half that Scotland were able to punish instead of us getting the ball down into their territory and playing from there.’

Bok coach Peter de Villiers defended his decision to sub goal-kicking machine Morne Steyn for Pat Lambie in the second half. Lambie went on to miss a crucial kick.

‘If we look at the Morne Steyn incident in isolation then it might have been a mistake, but if you look at the bigger picture towards next year’s World Cup then you have to say that the players need to get experience of playing in these conditions,’ De Villiers offered.

Poms take aim at Boks – Despite a disappointing showing against Samoa, England are feeling confident about the coming clash with the Springboks. Manager Martin Johnson wasn’t satisfied with the performance against Samoa, but said the fact that England ground out a win was important.

‘We had to keep our composure and keep on playing and it was a good experience for them,’ said Johnson. ‘I think we’ve clearly taken steps. This week was a new experience – not all of it good, but in a sense it is good because things like not finishing, going behind in the second half, are all ultimately good experience.

‘We’ve got one big shot at the world champions next week. Everything about us has got to have a little bit more intensity and accuracy. If we’d got that against Samoa we could have scored two or three more but we didn’t.’

And so they should be feeling confident. I think any team in the world would be feeling confident about beating the Springboks at the moment. I reckon we would lose to Samoa and Figi. I wish we could play them instead to better illustrate the sad state of affairs that we are in. I fear a loss to Scotland will not be enough to enforce change.

How about this for a novel idea? Yes the whole team played badly, but I put the most blame on the two scrunhalves, who persisted with the box kick strategy when it was clearly failing. Time and time again. I expect a lot better from Springbok level scrumhalves.

@stormersboy(stormersboy) : Francois Hougaard was quite predictable. He only passed the ball. He never once looked to have a break himself. I watched him for like 10-15 minutes and he never even looked for gaps! He was just fixed on getting the ball out. A great scrumhalf must always try and have a crack himself. It will keep the defence honest and give him more time for options because the defence will be held up and waiting for him to make the break therefore free up more space and time for his backline.

Die tackle werk was baie swak.

Die lynstaan werk was baie swak.

Dit was nie net die verkeerde taktiek wat daai wedstryd verloor het nie.

Okay , things need to change, this is something the boks cant run and hide from. What is really a joke is that SA has everything it needs…

Sorry to say but is Percy the bok kicking coach? What is so wrong with Vlok from the blue bulls? Why cant they both help Lambie? One might work on technique the other on the phycological aspects of focus ect ect.If Lambie could kick like MS, he would be the first choice Fly Half. Why is this not being done? Surely MS needs a compitant replacement?

Zane the pain… He must rate along with Earl the Pearl as one of the most over rated quota players of all time. FS > Zane. Coenie, what has be done wrong? How many tries has the man scored this season? That comes down to power, strength and being in the right place at the right time. Now we want to put the blame on Lambie.. I am sure he did not substitute himself..

Then we hear the conditions did not allow for the “expansive game” no **** Sherlock. So why not play it close with the forwards? The mindset needs to be changed.. Had Victor changed the “game plan” on the field when things were goin pear shaped it might have been different, but the guys are being told to kick and chase, how long does it take for them to see it does not work? Has not worked for a while now as well.. Being stupid is not doing the same thing wrong over and over again, being stupid is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result each time.

Krusty who should have rested the old boys on this tour, dragged them along in a bid to win a few games and save face. Would the populace have felt different had this bok team been filled with young up and coming talented players from the start? The like or Lambie, Strauss, Coenie , Mvovo, Jantjies and all the other young soon to be boks? I doubt it. It hurts the boks support more that this is a team filled with experienced boks. 100 + games for the captain alone! He has played more than 50+ games with his lock partner! Juan Smith is also no newbie, the list goes on and on. So why exactly is it that the boks supporters are so hurt? Simple, lack of faith and lack of vision.

Blame the ref . blame the weather , find any host of things you want, the sad fact remains the boks measure themselves against teams like the All Blacks , and the NZ team made the score 49-3. This bok team should never had lost, they are leaderless, clueless and rudderless. The world can see it, we can see it, yet all those in power refuse to change it. the RWC is not far away….
