Boks latest – Beast misses training

Boks latest – Beast misses training

Keo.co.za brings you the latest from the Springboks’ end-of-year tour.

Beast misses training – Beast Mtawarira sat out of Monday’s training session due to a knee injury incurred in the Boks’ defeat to Scotland. The decision on the prop’s availability will be made later in the week.

Should Mtawarira fail to pass fit, CJ van der Linde will be considered as a replacement. This would lead to Coenie Oosthuizen coming onto the Bok bench.

The team for Saturday’s Test is due to be named on Tuesday.

Poms buzzing ahead of Bok clash – England No 8 Nick Easter says his side is feeling confident about the coming tussle with the Springboks. England beat Australia two weeks ago, and despite a lacklustre showing against Samoa, he felt there were positives.

‘We’d created chances but had not nailed them,’ Easter wrote in his Daily Telegraph column. ‘We did in the second half. In many ways, we’ll get as much from this as we did from Australia. We’ll have to bring the best of both performances to beat South Africa.

‘I’ve played against them five times and lost the lot. England have lost their last six against them. Trust the Scots not to do us a favour. It’ll be a wounded Boks who come to Twickenham. It’ll be a full-blooded affair. It always is.

‘We want to finish on a high note. It would put a dampener on the autumn if we don’t manage to do that, difficult as it will be. We’ve got to make the most of these moments, all the more so as this is the last chance we get to clock a win against the southern hemisphere before the World Cup.

‘There’s a buzz in camp. We’re very much up for it.’

Matfield regrets poor tactics – Springbok captain Victor Matfield said his side employed the wrong approach and that contributed to a crushing loss to Scotland. The Boks tried to run the ball, even though atrociously stormy conditions prescribed a percentage approach.

‘There has been a lot of talk about us needing to be more expansive in our approach and maybe we paid too much attention to that,’ said Matfield. ‘These weren’t the right conditions to play expansively, and we made too many mistakes in our own half that Scotland were able to punish instead of us getting the ball down into their territory and playing from there.’

Bok coach Peter de Villiers defended his decision to sub goal-kicking machine Morne Steyn for Pat Lambie in the second half. Lambie went on to miss a crucial kick.

‘If we look at the Morne Steyn incident in isolation then it might have been a mistake, but if you look at the bigger picture towards next year’s World Cup then you have to say that the players need to get experience of playing in these conditions,’ De Villiers offered.

Poms take aim at Boks – Despite a disappointing showing against Samoa, England are feeling confident about the coming clash with the Springboks. Manager Martin Johnson wasn’t satisfied with the performance against Samoa, but said the fact that England ground out a win was important.

‘We had to keep our composure and keep on playing and it was a good experience for them,’ said Johnson. ‘I think we’ve clearly taken steps. This week was a new experience – not all of it good, but in a sense it is good because things like not finishing, going behind in the second half, are all ultimately good experience.

‘We’ve got one big shot at the world champions next week. Everything about us has got to have a little bit more intensity and accuracy. If we’d got that against Samoa we could have scored two or three more but we didn’t.’

@CoachPete(CoachPete) : 197 – Coach, How you doing yourself? Long time no chat buddy. I am very well.

Yeah, have no idea why Alberts is on the bench, just crazy that. Start with him, not sure where they will. Think Stegmann is not upto this level. So maybe they will play Alberts there but of course that is out of position for him. 8 would be great. Just don’t see Spies being dropped to the bench. Then Alberts scored a try both times he has come off the bench. So who knows.

Yes and not a up and under in 77 th minute thats when you keep ball in hand

In the wet weather play the big heavier loosies not the ponies Like Spies and Kanko

@CoachPete(CoachPete) : 200 – Coach the only thing is when we did kick, we kicked really bad. Not even that worked for us. We gave the Scots too much possession kicking it straight back to them.

@CoachPete(CoachPete) : 204 – Alberts should have started. Agree. Hope he starts this weekend.

  • 207.CoachPete: Reply to this comment

    @Puma(Puma) :
Well yes if you kick then they must be smart kicks or rather hold on to possession. (Like ABs)
But keep it tight and kick when its on and not down their throats
In a sloppy windy wet game, putting the ball in the space just behind the backs and in front of the 15 and wings can cause havoc

  • 208.CoachPete: Reply to this comment

    Ok we lost to Scots
it gives Scots hope and confidence Not a bad thing :)

But PLEASE we cannot lose to Poms

  • 209.CoachPete: Reply to this comment

    @Puma(Puma) :
I would start Alberts at 8 no questions
and maybe keep Stegman there and of course Juan

pete think back to the sharks vs bulls and wp in the semi and final

    it rained ball was snotty

sharks kept the ball in hand , kicked good kicks that they won back for the most

and yes even played some expansive rugby, why cant the boks try a simular style

it just comes back to the coaching staff that do not plan or prepare the team properly

  • 211.Puma: Reply to this comment

@CoachPete(CoachPete) : 207 – Should have, but we never even got that right Coach. I suppose we not used to playing in that much rain, but really we should be prepared for any weather. Cause nothing much worked well for us yesterday.

Yeah, agree I hate losing to England, but if we lost to the Scots what chance have we got against England the way they are playing? My feeling not much.

The only positives, we know we have plenty injured back home, can they change it around? Not if we keep just kicking all our ball away. We need to adapt or we will be left very far behind.

Remember we have Fiji, Wales and Samoa in our pool who love run at every chance. We might not even make the quater final if we don’t buck up and adapt quick next year.

We also need to play as a team and not individuals. That is a huge problem. Teams win games.

@CoachPete(CoachPete) : pete stegmann has not been good

yes he won 1 ball on the weekend but gave away so many penalties

i would stick with spies and play alberts and jaun on the flanks

if your loosies hit the rucks fast and hard a fetcher gets nullified , btw eng do not have a true fetcher , theyhit rucks and malls as a pack

then id have kanko on the bench and maybe a daniel

this would however mean only 2 backs as reserves

Pity Stegman has not been good

  • 216.Puma: Reply to this comment

@CoachPete(CoachPete) : I would go with Alberts at 8 no problem with that coach, but please not Stegmann, he was woeful yesterday and last week against Wales as well. Bring on Keegan for this game. Next year we will have Brussow back if he is totally over his two ops.

  • 217.CoachPete: Reply to this comment

    Yes I know
You know he is going to give 200 %

  • 218.sharks_lover: Reply to this comment

@CoachPete(CoachPete) : a good example again is the sharks , and sorry i am using them , but they do not have a fetcher perse

if you take the super 14 match between sharks and stormers?? well we whipped them and they had 2 fetchers

the same happened in the other games we played against them

    loose combo’s for sharks

kanko, alberts , deysel in the match against the stormers

with him injured it was kanko, alberts , daniel

with botes of course on the bench

there is no recognised fetcher there as you see

  • 219.CoachPete: Reply to this comment

And yes he was the form flank like alberts in CC

  • 220.Puma: Reply to this comment

@sharks_lover(sharks_lover) : 212 – Sharky, Agree don’t think we need a out and out fetcher like we used to anymore. Rather if we hunt in packs and big players like Alberts, Juan etc… will do it just fine.

  • 221.Puma: Reply to this comment

For next year, hope the Boks have plenty time together as a team before the wc, not this hurry scurry off to play a grand slam with hardly any gametime together. That has cost them huge. Also taking players that are tired not good really.

Shut up Shut up SHut up Shut up SHut uppppppppppppppppppp!!!!
Anything you morons in England say only makes matters worse. In rertrospect we shouldnt have tried to play expansively in those conditions…… FFFSSSSSS!!! Thats like an F1 team saying – when the rain came pouring down maybe we should have changed to wet weather tyres… um in retrospect. FFS youre pofessionals. In rain you adapt – IMMEDIATELY and it doesnt take a bliksemse degree to figure that out Vic. And next time stop arguing with Stuart Dickinson and just tackle the po es out of him by “accident”. Whinging does nothing.
As for Div – nice one bro – were building to next years World Cup by playing Lambie but in the meantime were so KA k we couldnt even pass properly. We have no clue and we´re going to get knocked out in the pool stages at this rate… but hey at least were building towards that … you know. If youre going to exit in the pool stages you want to do it in style.

You dont bleed new players when youre under the cosh and the rest of your team is falling apart. To all the naysayers who are roasting Lambie this week – pathetic. The kid is 20. He needs support on the field, not a bunch of pensioners with their knickers in a knot. We were so hondka k you could have brought dan Carter on and we would have lost.

SHUT UPPPPPPPPPPP!! WE DONT WANT TO HEAR IT!!!! And Bismarck on another web – ahh we´ll bounce back for England. and this pearler – One try could have given us the victory
FFSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS thats bonehead mentality. All Blacks put almost 50 on the Scots the week before and we think we would have been ok if we just got a little try at the end. Its not good enough. Its not convincing and quite frankly if we had won like that it would have been a travesty. We didnt deserve jack last night. Sies. Absolutely disgusting. Like a bunch of mistreated dogs who think a kick in the ribs is a sign that things are going well. No pride and no brains this bunch.

Sorry I know he is a Bull, but he was not up to it. Gave away a few penalties too. Not good that either. He has been replaced early too, so not only me seeing it must be the coaches

We know that we have great players and should be playing smart rugby and winning against Scots easily.

The game plan the defense, attacking strategies are the coaches jobs.

  • 235.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Slumtown(Slumtown) : 225 – Slumtown, have to agree, Brussow was another story totally. A little ball theif he was.. hehe. But the game has changed and Sharks never needed a true out and out fetcher either. But yeah, I rate Brussow highly if we need a out and out fetcher then it has to be him.

  • 236.CoachPete: Reply to this comment

Alberts wet weather strong carries hard yds good defence

@Puma(Puma) : Yeah man you have to say it like it is and i´m LIVID. We´ve been putting up with this **** for a year and a half now. If you have a look at the B&I Lions tour we played as badly for large parts of most of those games. We would play brilliantly then completely lose the plot start losing the collisions and just fade till we were hanging on by the skin of our teeth.
Then we had a great Tri Nations and we all relaxed and then came last years EOYT. its been going on for a long while and to keep hearing the nonsense these guys spew forth week in and week out just makes you realise how clueless EVERYONE seems from the top down. Its like PDV´s disease is spreading. I mean if youre a captain and you cant adapt immediately to a bit of rain after 104 test caps then you have a MAJOR friggin problem. And then to go and use that as some kind of lame excuse afterwards or mitigating factor. It beggars belief.

We got lucky for 2 weeks and somehow we thought perhaps its getting better – but yesterday was a HUGE wake up call. Its getting WORSE – and if they dont change the key problems its going to get MUCH worse. Sad but true.

  • 239.Bhloo: Reply to this comment

    @231 Puma
Put his performance (read role) in context to the expansive strategy vis-a’-vis the conditions. He did fine and no one else would have done better. In fact ignore Alberts try for the moment and he was no better.
Bulls has nothing to do with it. He is a Bok at the moment.

  • 240.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Porra the Fat and Clever Speedster(Porra) : 233 – Porra, Agree there, I would have Alberts in my team all of the time too

  • 241.Yetirat: Reply to this comment

What’s ironic is that when Divv took over he preached his vision of allowing players to play the moment and adjust their game according to the situation. What we saw yesterday was the polar opposite of that.

  • 242.sharks_lover: Reply to this comment

well here is a fact . all these players starred for their provinces , well most of them lol

and here in the bok setup they just not getting together as a unit

  • 243.Slumtown: Reply to this comment

@Puma(Puma) : Thing with Brussouw was he isnt only afetcher like a lot of people believe. If you look at his stats – he is one of the most commited defenders with one of the highest tackle counts. He is everywhere all the time – much like McCaw, and he slows ball down he cant pilfer. He´s tough and aggresive and in a tight game he is gold. If you had to play a combo of him Juan and Alberts at the back it would be frightening.

  • 244.CoachPete: Reply to this comment

    @Slumtown(Slumtown) :
Yep you run on tot field and change it there at start
F*^%k the coach and his expansive game plan
Victor and JdV should have said we play it tight with forwards and kick our goals

  • 245.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Bhloo(redj) : 239 – Bhloo, I know he is a Bok but he was superb for the Bulls, but somehow he is not doing it with the Boks. I never thought he was great at all. Also he never played much for such a long, long time and all of a sudden there he is selected for the Boks. Not sure how the players that were performing well and playing at the time felt. But yeah, that happens. Somehow don’t think he will start this week Bhloo. Actually I have no idea just my feeling.

@sharks_lover(sharks_lover) : My point exactly. Sharks and Stormers played well this Currie Cup. Super 14 we had Bulls and Stormers playing in the finals. Its just not possible to get that bad in so short a time. So it has to be the coaching staff and selection policy.

  • 249.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Slumtown(Slumtown) : 243 – Slumtown, yes agree. Look I rate Brussow and always have he is a fantastic player. If he gets selected no problems with that at all.

Now we have to see if he is over his ops. Had two done. Think he will be ready for the S15. Hope all the injured are ready next year.

@sharks_lover(sharks_lover) : lol cant help it mate – stupidity is one thing but when you keep bumping your head against the same wall I think its called retardedness. At this level of the game its beyond unacceptable and us as fans should let them know by bombarding Oregon Hoskins with 1000´s of emails, letters and calls calling for the entire coaching staff to go, and if it doesnt happen simply stop attending all Bok games. Lets see how they deal with that one. Zero bums on seats = mega panic stations.
