Matfield in line for top award
25 Nov 2010
Victor Matfield has made the shortlist for the 2010 IRB Player of the Year.
Richie McCaw and Mils Muliaina (both New Zealand), Imanol Harinordoquy (France), and Australian pair David Pocock and Kurtley Beale are also in the running.
The nominees were selected by the IRB Awards independent panel of judges, chaired by John Eales, following a year-long review of all Test matches and thorough consultation and deliberation. The panel comprises Will Greenwood, Gavin Hastings, Raphaël Ibanez, Francois Pienaar, Agustín Pichot, Scott Quinnell, Tana Umaga, and Paul Wallace.
The winner will be announced on 1 December, along with the IRB Coach of the Year and IRB Team of the Year.

a little bit of “trickery” and this award is in McCaw’s bag.
25 Nov 2010, 15:02 pm
look you have to give it to the guy who scored 98% on the ref quiz.
25 Nov 2010, 15:09 pm
Matfield has been very good in a very bad Bok team (the Scotland test excluded). But the Boks dont deserve any awards this year except Biggest Disapointment.
After 2009, then the S14 and then the June tests, it is unbelievable how bad this year has turned out.
25 Nov 2010, 15:10 pm
@THEBokFan(bokfan1) :
I thought he had a very average 3N in 2010.
25 Nov 2010, 15:12 pm
Where’s Steggies?
25 Nov 2010, 15:15 pm
@gunther(gunther) : Well, Gunther. You need to assess the question paper to gain an understanding of why ‘the guy who scored 98%’ actually scored 98%. These papers are highly confidential and the security in place to ensure it remains so, top-class (not unlike our own matric exam papers). I hooked up with the guys with Wikileaks though, and they managed to extract a couple of the questions ‘the guy who scored 98%’ did really well on:
(1) How long do you need to suck on PoB’s rooster to ensure a favourable result?
(2) Yellow cards. Only for non-AB teams. Substantiate with reasons.
(3)Kindly write a 1000 word essay on why the South Africans do not deserve even-handed treatment from referees.
25 Nov 2010, 15:19 pm
No Bok deserves an award this year. We have not been good enough. Simple as that.
25 Nov 2010, 15:22 pm
@Two Eyed(Two Eyed) :
don’t be embraboer.
25 Nov 2010, 15:44 pm
Last year Richie didn’t deserve the award, this year Matfield doesn’t deserve the award, let’s see what happens.
25 Nov 2010, 15:52 pm
Glad to see Beale there, had a great season. Would like to know why Kieran Read isnt there, they’ve had six nominations before…
25 Nov 2010, 16:05 pm
Coach of the year , PDV !
25 Nov 2010, 16:13 pm
Krusty for clown of the year.
Krusty for media personality of the year.
25 Nov 2010, 16:15 pm
Anyways,
How can Matfield be nominated as an IRB player of the year when Gurthro Steenkamp was the SA Rugby player of the year?
Where is the credibility in the process?
25 Nov 2010, 16:40 pm
@willievz(willievz) :
surely there were different judges for the two awards?
25 Nov 2010, 16:43 pm
@gunther(gunther) : Certainly.
But that just shows you how different (credible) judges interpret and decide on excellence.
And, in turn, it tells you that these awards are simply in the eye of the beholder.
25 Nov 2010, 16:51 pm
@willievz(willievz) :
subjectivity is a ******…
25 Nov 2010, 16:57 pm
@willievz(willievz) : 17, well said…
25 Nov 2010, 17:17 pm
Either Richie or Beale deserves the poty.
PDiV to take absolute idiotic most braindead coach of the year.
Muir to take the ‘have been riding on my reputation as a semi-decent outside center for WAAAAAAAAYYYY too long now’ rubbish acoty. (*** coach of the year)
25 Nov 2010, 18:31 pm
what a joke…maybe if Victor was a flyhalf or centre he could deserve the award with the amount of time he spends on attach in those positions.
25 Nov 2010, 18:31 pm
I don’t understand these award nominations. Its like they’re always a year or 2 behind.
I thought Big Vic was below par in the Tri-Nations this year. Played well in 1 or 2 subsequent, but for the most part has been a bit of a disappointment this year.
But for sure he thoroughly deserves to be nominated on any prior years performances.
25 Nov 2010, 18:50 pm
@Kietzphat(Kietzphat) : agreed…bekker should of replaced him last year anyway.
He thinks he is god’s goft to rugby, and forgets his primary role of a lock FORWARD.
25 Nov 2010, 19:17 pm
Worst player of the year award goes to Brian Habana.
25 Nov 2010, 19:31 pm
@daydreamer(daydreamer) : he doesn’t pick himself does he?
25 Nov 2010, 19:54 pm
@Seven(Seven) : And you think Bekker plays the “primary role of a lock FORWARD” way. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Bekker is what Matfield is without the brains, which is not bad but not nearly as good as Matfield is.
Withou the combination of Matfield and Du Preez the Boks would not have been as good as they are and defintely without WC and British Lions victories. That is a fact.
Our biggest games in the WC were against England and in those two games FdP and Matfield were the MotM.
25 Nov 2010, 19:57 pm
@Seven(Seven) : By the way will your name be “Eight” next year, “Nine” the following year, etc. Oh sorry I should probably explain the “etc” thing…
25 Nov 2010, 20:17 pm
@Horings(Horings) : no agreed, definately not disputing his ability..just dont think he is as great as made out to be, my ultimate lock was Mark Andrews…
But ya Bekker was phenomonal at one point before he got caught with his pants down and injuries, and definately was pushing Matfield on his form.
And also FdP pure class…and 2007 is a long time away.
As for Matfield’s captaincy well i think the loss on the weekend is perfect example,(also few more when john was injured in previous years, please dont mention our win in NZ due to rickys lucky bounce) he just can’t replicate what he does at the Bulls wth his leadership at the Boks.
Dont forget to kiss big Vics picture before you go to sleep
25 Nov 2010, 20:25 pm
by the way, before you jump on me again, i wouldn’t replace him and appreciate his value…
but a player should not play on reputation alone.
Smit should of been dropped and so should habana…once they have rest, play themselves back into form…
all will be in 22 for next year
but i wish krusty wasn’t involved after saturday…
**** and Gary should be embarrassed for their credentials under the clown fisherman,
If we end up 5th after a loss on Saturday, he would be fired in any other professional outfit.
Its like the all blacks dropping out the top 3, man united not making the champions league, the patriots not qualifying for the play offs after winning the superbowl…
Sadly South Africa are behind in the world of running sport as a professional, money-making business
25 Nov 2010, 20:33 pm
30, 40 or 50 years from now the name Victor Matfield will be mentioned alongside those of Eales and Oom Frik as one of the best lock forwards of all times.
Rightly so.
About the same time, the name of John Smit will be mentioned as one of the best captains of union to play the game in Green and Gold.
I was asked earlier today who I would pick for 2011, my answer was simple; ‘Why pick either, if I can have both in my team?’
25 Nov 2010, 20:51 pm
only in South Africa will a coach be ‘fired’, contract not renewed, after winning a World Cup in 4 years…
well lets wait and see for Saturday. It’s going to be really difficult too.
And if come Sunday we are just above Scotland, heads should roll
And I haven’t looked this up but off the top of my head…
we were horrible on the end of year tour last year, we lost to clubs sides leicster and saracens, ireland, france. its also debatable whether we should of lost the game in Australia and definately shouldnt of lost the 3rds lions test.
this year we were kak and im straining for 2008, but i’m pretty sure we lost that tri nations too. not sure of end of year results
BUT THE BOTTOM OF LINE IS WE ARE PLAYING UGLY RUGBY…
25 Nov 2010, 20:52 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt) : 100%
25 Nov 2010, 21:48 pm
Vm is the token bok. No danger of him getting the award.
25 Nov 2010, 21:53 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt) :
Awesome post award – you sir, are full of WIN
25 Nov 2010, 21:59 pm
He has mostly always been good in the lineouts, but otherwise he seems to pace himself and then has a good game every now and then, but mostly my impression watching him on the field is of a guy that does pace himself and not over exert, i dont think he deserves this award.
25 Nov 2010, 21:59 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt) :
Spot on.
Matfield revolutionised the way a no 5 lock plays.
My gripe is with the IRB awards. I don’t think Big Vic played nearly to his potential this year, so I can’t see why he’s been nominated.
But it was the same last year when Dan C-arhda won. He was far better the previous year, yet Shane Williams won after being named among 4 NH nominees. FdP wasn’t even nominated last year.
How FdP has never won player of the year is beyond me.
25 Nov 2010, 22:02 pm
Vic is well past his prime. He was great once, but he’s only average now.
25 Nov 2010, 22:18 pm
@Kietzphat(Kietzphat) : richie mccaw won it last year…
25 Nov 2010, 22:24 pm
@TheTackler(TheTackler) : u should of just agreed with my post above
25 Nov 2010, 22:27 pm
@Transformation(Transformation) : would also like to know how Matfield revolutionised the way a no 5 lock plays?
was this for his added distribution in the backline? (hand speed negated)
or for the amount of time he spent in the backline?
No revolution..
25 Nov 2010, 22:34 pm
This is the 10 th time that this awards will be given.
Richie has been nominated 7/10 times – won it twice
Carter 3/10 – won it once
O’driscoll 3/10 – never won it
Giteau – 3/10 – no wins
Habanna – 2/10 – one win
Wilkinson and du Preez – 2 nominations, no wins
Based on this, Richie is by far the best (consistently) rugby player in the world during this decade.
Nobody even comes close.
25 Nov 2010, 22:41 pm
The ex zimbo with the impressive biceps might soon take over from Richie as the best opensider in the world
25 Nov 2010, 23:16 pm
@Robzim(Robzim) : Biceps….Mmmmm!!
26 Nov 2010, 00:57 am
Sorry, Transie, you are 100% correct. Meant to say Reechee McCaw. Brain ****. Reechee won it after being schooled by Brussouw in the 3N last year. He was far better in ’08 than he was in ’09.
26 Nov 2010, 00:59 am
Jeepers, you can’t even write f a r t now, without being censored?
26 Nov 2010, 04:27 am
@Robzim(Robzim) :
Yip pretty obvious isn’t it.
26 Nov 2010, 08:02 am
I don’t think Victor deserves this. I think a kiwi needs to win it.
26 Nov 2010, 09:08 am
Why bother nominating anyone else if you are going to give it to a KIWI.
26 Nov 2010, 09:57 am
@willievz(willievz) : Easy really, The SA rugby player award also takes the domestic competition into acount, IRB player only takes international games into account
26 Nov 2010, 10:00 am
@Kietzphat(Kietzphat) : Skopskiet was on the judging panel when FdP was nominated, thats why
