Reid rated tops in NZ
17 Dec 2010
Kieran Read has been named New Zealand Player of the Year.
The Crusaders and All Blacks loose forward was a surprising victor ahead of Richie McCaw. Reid has enjoyed a consistently good season, but McCaw, who won the IRB Player of the Year title earlier this month, was favourite for the country’s top prize.
The New Zealand Rugby Union described Read as ‘a rock at the back of the scrum’. Blues halfback Alby Mathewson was named Super 14 Player of the Year.

Should have Mccaw in my humble opinion but Reid also good choice
17 Dec 2010, 10:30 am
I would have given it to Jerome Kaino, who ended the rugby year like Keiran Read started it.
17 Dec 2010, 11:27 am
the article refers to “Read” – because it is written by new zealanders – and the title of the thread reads “Reid” – because it is written by r_etarded & incompetent keo nutjobs.
17 Dec 2010, 12:37 pm
Read is a great call. Huge development in the last two years. Best No 8 in the world
McCaw deserves it most years lets face it. He got the IRB award for the year.
Mulliana s outstanding season ending with breaking NZ test record with Ritchie think could be recorded with an award this year. Worthy award winner as well. He’s a legend now.
17 Dec 2010, 14:02 pm
Read thoroughly deserves it, has had a great year..
if Pierre gets some harder roids he too could be as good as Keiran…
could being the operative word..
17 Dec 2010, 15:09 pm
Read was massive this yr
Best no.8 since Toutai Kefu retired.
no.8 position has been largely talentless for a few yrs.(Barring So’oialo 2005-2007
17 Dec 2010, 15:12 pm
@mshiniwami : is that including all the nh blokes like parisse?
17 Dec 2010, 15:34 pm
@Transformation :
Parisse is talented,possibly the best 8 between 07-09 but cant really judge that without indisputable evidence as his best game were played for Stade Francais in Heineken/Top 14-which we all know is not Test standard.(Lets not even speak about that lump of a 8 for England,Picamoles-France,Wales-???,Leamy-Ireland..No chance)
for Italy….Few shining lights in rubbish team but not enough to be indisputable no.1 eigthman.
Since Cribb/Joe van Niekerk/Kefu/Harinodiquoy era in early 2000′s…No.8 play has been rugby

Read, Kaino, McCaw — the perfect back row for a RWC.
17 Dec 2010, 23:44 pm
@tackler. You left out quarterfinal exit.
18 Dec 2010, 10:17 am
@stormer in a teacup : These men play for NZ, not the QF-exiting Boks. They will be playing in the RWC champion team in 2011. They’re looking forward, not backward.
18 Dec 2010, 11:37 am
The Opium Pushing Slave Traders are the Queens of the RWC chokers. They have lost so many finals matches I cannot remember how many. Referees get them there but cannot get them through.
18 Dec 2010, 20:56 pm
McCaw Kaino Read now the best AB loosie-combo since Josh Zinny & Ice in ’96
18 Dec 2010, 21:43 pm
@AiDoc : The third-world muti-men from darkest Africa can’t even beat an egg these days, especially with their clown “coach” with the soprano voice.
18 Dec 2010, 22:48 pm
Future All Black captain, very intelligent player.
18 Dec 2010, 23:39 pm
Makes sense, McCaw wins World Player, but Reid is best New Zealand player c.c .
Point is, the panel decided not to give it to McCaw but share the spoils. I don’t take much notice of these awards. What matters is what happens on the field.
18 Dec 2010, 23:48 pm
read is a great player.
but our bok backrow will punish the kiwis again when back to full strength.
and the kiwis know it.
2011 wc will be a cracker.
19 Dec 2010, 00:05 am
Kaino is over rated
19 Dec 2010, 01:50 am
@rangerman :@17.
Who’s that then? Brussouw, Smith, And Spies?
19 Dec 2010, 04:12 am
The AB back row totally dominated their Bok opposites.
19 Dec 2010, 09:24 am
@TheTackler : kuk man, in 2009 the bok back row did the dominating. the backrow hasnt been the same since due to injury and you know it.
keep talking though sonny, i see the four year record has hit the scratch again
19 Dec 2010, 09:53 am
The Bok back row have never dominated the ABs — the best they managed was parity. But in 2010 the ABs totally overwhelmed the Boks at the breakdown, in the set-pieces, everywhere.
19 Dec 2010, 10:25 am
@TheTackler : kuk man.
in 2009 they dominated the ab’s at the breakdown.
dominated.
sure, reechee the cheat wasnt there and this year juan wasnt there to begin with and neither was brussow at all.
the bok loosies have the measure of the ab backrow when both sides have their first choice players available.
you know this, i know this.
19 Dec 2010, 10:26 am
@JL1 : @ 18
of course he is, he’s not from Pretoria.
19 Dec 2010, 10:27 am
The Springbok midfield destroyed the All Blacks in that department as all the Boks points were scored exclusively by them….the forwards simply set up the platform for them and the rest was history..
19 Dec 2010, 10:28 am
@Black Panther :
He is?
19 Dec 2010, 10:30 am
..oh..not from Pretoria. Bit foggy this morning.
19 Dec 2010, 10:32 am
2009 ?
um, its 2010. Days away from 2011.
And the breakdown rules are completely different in 2010 to 2009.
In 2010, the Bok loosies couldnt dominate Scotland.
In 2009, they couldnt dominate Ireland. Or France.
Always living on past glories, are Bok fans the New English ? “we won the World Cup in 1966….”.
Bring back Geoff Hurst !
19 Dec 2010, 10:39 am
@Black Panther :
I agree with you. Rules have changed and the Boks weren’t coached to adapt.
Answering previous bloggers on the 2009 season dude.
Looking forward to the RWC. I still think it’s wide open although the All Blacks are looking red hot. Anything can happen hey.
19 Dec 2010, 10:42 am
@Great White Shark : @ 25
In fact it was the Bok tight-5 who laid the platform for Bok success in 2009, not the loosies. Bismarck was superb esp in the loose, Vic dominating the lineouts, the maul was the key weapon. Bok fans have got drunk on Brussows emergence on the scene, and he really was brilliant, but this was because they finally picked a proper openside flanker instead of a bludgeon like Burger. The effect was dramatic. But outside of the breakdown, Brussow was anonymous except when he was consigned to ball-carrier at the back of that magnificent maul. To assume Brussow will have the same effect under the new ‘rules’ is grasping at straws, his tackle/turnover technique, which was his point-of-difference, will now be penalised.
The best SA loosie is, by some considerable distance, Juan Smith. But even he would have struggled to beat any team on his own, which is what he would have had to do with Spies persona non grata in TriN’10.
19 Dec 2010, 10:44 am
@Great White Shark : @ 29
of course its completely wide open. Always was. The only people making the ABs red hot favourites are opposition fans, and we all know they would like to deflect the Favourite tag away from their team.
The same 5-6 teams will contest the trophy, as in previous RWCs.
19 Dec 2010, 10:47 am
Yep it was marvelous to see the young Brussouw doing what we haven’t see many Boks do in years. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve sworn at the tv, watching our ball being taken because of a lack of specialist fetchers…much like 2010.
If the Boks don’t rectify this in 2011 we’re in big shite. That and our impotent, and dare I say, tiny midfield.
19 Dec 2010, 10:49 am
@Black Panther :
Australia will be dark horses. England might just fire on the day. Not sure if France are in it this time.
19 Dec 2010, 10:53 am
@Black Panther : @24
What exactly has Kaino done so far.In big games you seldom see him, but that is exactly what you would expect of a Samoan,hey
19 Dec 2010, 11:04 am
@JL1 :
In ‘big games’, the Boks disappeared en masse. But only a fool would right them off. But, then, youre a fool JL1, so thats why you write-off anyone who is not wearing Green’n'Gold. Or Blue.
Kaino was astounding in winning the Grand Slam, look for the immense repeat-tackles when the ABs were under the kosh on their line vs Ire and Engl. His stats showed he won 90% of his lineout calls. And he was also prevalent in giving the final pass in key tries throughout the season, in partic in TriN and, again, vs Ire and Eng showing hands worthy of the best centres. Given that his schoolboy career was primarily at 13, then thats no surprise.
Still living on past glories, arent you JL1. Cant quite believe that 2 x S14 Finalists couldnt produce a dominant Bok side, whilst ignoring NZ providing 3 x S14 SemiFinalists in 2009 but then capitulating in the TriN.
Man-up, JL1. Is that even possible ?
19 Dec 2010, 11:08 am
@Black Panther :
You have a better coach. We have a better circus performer.
19 Dec 2010, 11:20 am
@Great White Shark : @ 33
Ive been saying for 12mths already that the Aussies will be the team NZ fear the most. Its the rivalry, the coach, the confidence of youth, the NZers (Cooper & O’Conner) and Devils Spawn (ARU CEO) himself.
Safas dont see any further past their own noses when it comes to their rivalry with NZ, but the Aussies like nothing better than beating the ABs in rugby and can do so when least expected to. Im not sure if this young Aus team can go all the way, but they most definitely have it in them to beat any team, incl ABs, in a 1-off. And thats all it takes.
19 Dec 2010, 19:46 pm
Shows how useless the IRB awards are.
Reid was exceptional this year.
Well done to a player with perhaps not so much natural talent, but an honest and damn hard worker.
Reminds me quite a bit of Mark Andrews this guy.
Well done.
19 Dec 2010, 23:24 pm
@Black Panther : But only a fool would right them off.
It’s “WRITE”, right?
19 Dec 2010, 23:26 pm
@rangerman : Parity, nothing more.
19 Dec 2010, 23:41 pm
What more could a team ask for…two Richie McCaws…
20 Dec 2010, 01:03 am
@TheTackler :
My brain said write write, but my right hand wasnt right.
Well done Tickler, perseverance finally claims its reward. I would have jumped on that too.
Merry Christmas and kia kaha you old b@st@rd !
20 Dec 2010, 01:04 am
@PissAnt :
Good analogy.
26 Dec 2010, 05:52 am
@Black Panther : I think my team as come a long way but still very inconsistent, not like the AB’s, The EOYT showed that we are not as adaptable in different conditions and thats a real worry. We’ve got some great players to come back in as well remember, Horwill, Digby and Palu, it will be good to seem them compete for spots which is unusual for us. It will be a big year next year, I hope we are the last team standing
Have your say
