The new face of Super Rugby

The new face of Super Rugby

Find out everything you need to know about the expanded competition in the bumper 156-page issue of SA Rugby magazine.

We kick off our Super Rugby preview section with an idiot’s guide to the new format (if you still don’t know how it works after reading this, we can’t help you). That’s followed by three pages on each South African team (how they are shaping up, player signings/losses, fixtures, previous log finishes, numbers that matter etc) and one page on each of the Kiwi and Aussie sides.

Also in the new issue:

– The Springboks failed to make any progress on their end-of-year tour

– Is Victor Matfield too conservative to be Bok captain?

– The All Blacks capped off an outstanding 2010 with their third Grand Slam in five years

– The Wallabies were frustratingly inconsistent on their end-of-year tour

– If England are to seriously challenge for the World Cup, they will have to stand up to the big beasts of the game

– Behind the swagger lies a secret diary that is driving England wing Chris Ashton to new heights

– Why the Barbarians are still relevant in the professional era

– Yet again the World Cup schedule helps the big nations and hinders the smaller ones. Why can’t the IRB make rugby’s showpiece event fair to all?

– Plus: Why Stuart Abbott is back in SA, Tim Noakes on the Boks ‘doping’ controversy, Heinrich Brussow’s injury battle, SA players in Europe

    a 1 year plan b!tch.

    @Two Eyed :

    Stats do the talking man , if you made Number 2 out of all top Southern Hemisphere clubs in Super 14 then you can consider it a success , if you become the only SA team in Super Rugby history to beat all Kiwi sides. 15 year plan bla blah haha

    But how long have Rassie been with the WP/Stormers?

  • 57.Mighty Horua: Reply to this comment

    BTW

    I hope they drop that USELESS Paul Harris!

    And since when is Paul Harris fielding at Slip?

    Johan Botha way, way, way better than this quota

  • 58.Mighty Horua: Reply to this comment

    From a pool of 55 million Saffas (ZImbos included), there no better SPIN bowler than Paul Harris?

  • 59.gunther: Reply to this comment

    15 year plan.

    snort :)

    @Mighty Horua :

    Agreed, although no one is more useless than Tsotsobe.
    Epic quota.
    In what universe and on what planet is he a better cricketer than McLaren?

    Day 1 of this test, ball moving all over the place, batsmen looking in trouble and this clown goes for 50 in 9 overs??!

    Ditto for their second innings.
    At least Harris took a few important wickets.

  • 61.Two Eyed: Reply to this comment

    @Mighty Horua : Tsotsobe battles to get above the 130km/h mark. On that first day with all the help from the pitch he was useless.

    @John Galt : Yep….agree.

    @John Galt : lopsy is not effective, needs to go back to supersport series.

    @John Galt :

    Agree on Tsotsobe but the USELESS title must go to Paul Harris

    I think the reason why hes at slip is that he’s effing slow or just effing lazy.

    There are much better fielders that could be slip – Like AB or Amla

    Johan Botha should play – however the clique will decide otherwise

    Who was MOM?

  • 67.Mighty Horua: Reply to this comment

    Apart from just bowling 40 overs of arm balls, taking the odd wicket in between, looking at the oppostion players as if the ball spun – Paul Harris contributes F-ALL

    loppers needs to find an extra two yards of pace.

    if parnell has come through the 4 day game unscathed they might go with him.

    otherwise its maclaren.

  • 70.Mighty Horua: Reply to this comment

    Even JP Dumniny posed a bigger threat than Paul Harris – and that was last year vs Poms

  • 71.Mighty Horua: Reply to this comment

    The reason Paul Harris left the Titans – actually the Titans discarded him cause he was behind Roelof

    Paul isnt even first choice at his franchise

  • 72.John Galt: Reply to this comment

    @Mighty Horua :

    I remember that, JP got a few key wickets whilst relegating Harris to the ‘specialist fielder’ tag.
    Harris is very unathletic. Same with Lonwabe ‘Kwashiokor’ Tsosobe.

    I think they both need a good gym program.

  • 73.PissAnt: Reply to this comment

    Paul Harris cannot even turn a bloody doorknob

  • 74.PissAnt: Reply to this comment

    Milk has a more consistent record of turning than Harris

  • 75.PissAnt: Reply to this comment

    The only way he ever gets wickets is when batsmen are fooled to play for the turn (which is never there).

  • 76.Mighty Horua: Reply to this comment

    @John Galt :

    Gym wont help!

    They are good provincial players and needs to be content within that realm

  • 79.Mighty Horua: Reply to this comment

    Imagine they send Paul Harris to the Gym – We might end up with a Shoaib Aktar looking Harris

  • 80.Transformation: Reply to this comment

  • 81.Transformation: Reply to this comment

    @gunther : lopsy looks a tad chubby to me, he needs to be fit as a fiddle, maybe some fitness training with that warhorse makhaya will do him some good…

    Come on guys its not as if we have ever had a good spinner in recent years.

    Gogga Adams, Nicky Boje,Johan Botha, Harris , Symcox etc etc, they never scared opposition.

    Vinnige Fanie, Donald, Pollock , Steyn , Morkel.

    We breed fast bowlers, spinners are not in our blood.

  • 83.gunther: Reply to this comment

    @wp_boytjie :

    symcox was ten times the spinner harris is.

    adams and boje even robbie petersen were all better than harris.

    harris can’t even tie up an end.

    he is the worst spinner in world cricket.

    even that dude from zim is better than him.

    the sooner Imran Tahir qualifies the better.

    Dilettante!

    Cheers Jinx the Lynx. Catch you on the B-side.

    Imraan Tahir is a must for the Proteas. That guy is a fantastic Legspinner! Can you imagine the team with him in it! All round they would be good. Harris is ok, but not a match winner in Imraan’s class. He is married to a SA girl and has qualified.

    Well done Proteas and congrats Jacques! The ****** is off your back now.

    After England match

    “Harris “to be charged” for contravening Trade Descriptions Act

    Sources tell me that the South African government is in the final stages of an investigation into whether Paul Harris has contravened the South African Trade Descriptions Act.

    The investigation was started following video evidence provided from the third test match between South Africa and England at Cape Town, which finished on 7 January. The video evidence mainly centred on the final days play when Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell and Graham Onions saw England to a narrow nine wickets down draw much to the frustration of Graeme Smith, Proteas supporters and so it seems the South African government.

    Having checked a wealth of other materials including Wisden, CricInfo and transcripts of interviews with Harris himself, the investigators found that he was described by all as a slow left arm spinner.

    However, on viewing the video evidence from Cape Town and that of several other test matches that Harris has played in, the investigators found no evidence of spin, turn or even a mild tweak. My source tells me the fact that JP Duminy was able to extract considerable spin and turn from the pitch was the final nail in the coffin for Harris.

    Charges are expected to be brought shortly and Harris’ place in the squad for the impending tour of India is expected to be in jeopardy.”

    some dudes must be bloated from the humble pie down under :D

    No Beer?

    by David Lloyd

    It looks like a u-turn rather than a U2 for Australia in the third Test match.

    They’ve made some extraordinary selections and the talk is that they’re going to play four pace bowlers with Michael Beer being left out. They’ve got Steven Smith to provide a bit of spin, but I think they’ll need Simon Smith and his amazing dancing bear to beat England!

    There’s a programme called Inside Cricket on Fox Sport out here, and the panel have been getting really stuck in to the Australian players. Of Xavier Doherty, Mark Waugh said: “He bowled that many pies he should have opened a bakery.”

    Ricky Ponting says they deserve all the stick they’re getting after playing some pretty ordinary cricket. He’s not hiding and I admire him for that. As usual people are talking about sacking the captain, but if you take a step back you wonder who else could do the job. He’s only as good as the team he’s got.

    In my opinion, the best bowlers are in the side, but the problem is they’re all coming back from injury. It was pretty clear they were unfit in the first two Tests and maybe 10 days off will have helped.

    They need a spark and everybody here is saying that Mitchell Johnson has to perform. This bloke was International Cricketer of the Year in 2009, but as I’ve written in this blog before, we in England have never seen anything like that. I don’t think it’s unfair to say he’s been dreadful every time I’ve watched him.

    I thought they might send him away to play some cricket, but he has stayed with the group and just netted. Well, there’s a time when those nets are going to get taken away.

    And if he was that great, why did he get left out in the first place?

    A final word on Australia. You could say that their cricket is a bit of a laugh at the moment. Well, I’ve just been watching a one-day game on TV and a fellow called Tommy Cooper has taken two catches!
