The new face of Super Rugby

The new face of Super Rugby

Find out everything you need to know about the expanded competition in the bumper 156-page issue of SA Rugby magazine.

We kick off our Super Rugby preview section with an idiot’s guide to the new format (if you still don’t know how it works after reading this, we can’t help you). That’s followed by three pages on each South African team (how they are shaping up, player signings/losses, fixtures, previous log finishes, numbers that matter etc) and one page on each of the Kiwi and Aussie sides.

Also in the new issue:

– The Springboks failed to make any progress on their end-of-year tour

– Is Victor Matfield too conservative to be Bok captain?

– The All Blacks capped off an outstanding 2010 with their third Grand Slam in five years

– The Wallabies were frustratingly inconsistent on their end-of-year tour

– If England are to seriously challenge for the World Cup, they will have to stand up to the big beasts of the game

– Behind the swagger lies a secret diary that is driving England wing Chris Ashton to new heights

– Why the Barbarians are still relevant in the professional era

– Yet again the World Cup schedule helps the big nations and hinders the smaller ones. Why can’t the IRB make rugby’s showpiece event fair to all?

– Plus: Why Stuart Abbott is back in SA, Tim Noakes on the Boks ‘doping’ controversy, Heinrich Brussow’s injury battle, SA players in Europe

    Why dont Lazy Smith have a bowl?

    @Mighty Horua : 1700 don’t worry, it makes quota_sux feel better denigrating black people in whatever way he can. :D

    living amongst those semi-r_etards in forest hill who are either fisherman or security guards eats into his very being…there’s even a mental facility right there in forest hill to house them chop-chop ;)

    pick Tahir ….. Morkel also very overrated … Lobsy won’t make the Warriors team … pick Parnel – he’s a lefty – variation and can bat a bit …

    1 Smith
    2 Amla
    3 Kallis
    4 Faf du Plessis
    5 AB (keeper)
    6 Duminy (2nd spin option)
    7 McClaren
    8 Steyn
    9 Parnel
    10 Morkel
    11 Tahir

    Steyn has deserved to get at least 7 wickets today.

    Unbelievable spell of controlled swing bowling at pace.
    How Tendulkar is still in after the first over of the day is still beyond me.

    Great contest – best batsman in the world v best batsmen in the world.

    trans … the crime rate is higher in Summerstrand than Forrest hill … you can only blame scum in the NMMU hostels for that!

    Have you finally accepted that the sun has all the colours of the rainbow in its emitted bright light and that after after wanting to drop the likes of Prince(top-scored in the 2nd.innings in Durban)? and others like him?

    @E.T. : What cult have you joined? I hope they haven’t overcharged you for the sandals.

    Your hero worship of “The Master” and your demonising of “Mafia Smith” is disturbing, if not tragic.

    Smith is captain of the Proteas, a side my emotional disease forces me to support for a reason. Coming out to bat at the SCG with a broken hand to try to save a test match even with a series won rather than being nice to the little figurine you have bobbling about on your dashboard, is why.

    Every top team has a clique of seniors who run the show. Sometimes it is based around the coach and sometimes around the captain. Without this core the team will never succeed.

    I support the use of all reliable technology in all international matches.It is a moot point here because the players don’t have access to it.

    @E.T. :
    Did he middle anything in Durban or yesterday or for the last 2 seasons for that matter?

    And he’s getting on bit, whats he? 33 34? He aint no Kallis or Tendulkar so its time for him to be put out to pasture.

    Bring in Ingram.

  • 1710.John Galt: Reply to this comment

    @E.T. :
    And if by your ‘colours of the rainbow’ shpeel you’re intimating something racial, if you have a look at the side I would pick, my team has the exact same ratio as it is now.

    Douche bag.

    @stormer in a teacup :

    Certainly not the drunken cricket Mafia cult that all of Smith, J.’Carless’, Boucher and De Vil. with undrlings like Harris and the like belong to.
    Their forte seems to be to extort sponsored, expensive cars for the purpose of drunkenly crashing them into walls and then playing with the help of steroids to hide the damage of contused ribs til the series seems to be heading to a total stalemate.

    @1709

    Try to be gutsy by saying that to him and see how he middles you in the knackers? If Prince is old then J. ‘Carless’ is ancient at 36 hence the need for the Tina-Turner-I got-it-from-Durban-fake hair-implants.

    @1710

    Is the analytically challenged and prejudiced one struggling to spell the simple word “spiel”?

    There I have done for you. Say thank you mutt.

    @E.T. :

    Thats your argument? Seriously? Kallis vs Prince?

    Wow.

    I’ll help you out, its easier this way.
    Kallis last 7 tests, 5 hundreds including a double ton. Career avg over 56.
    Prince? I could very easily look it up as well but its no use, you know the answer already.

    Goodbye and thank you Shloser.

    It is hilariously amusing to witness the essence of this notion of “if you can’t beat them then join them” as the hypocrites join the enormously HUGE and GLOBAL Sachin Tendulkar Fan Club.

    They would obviously wish it were not so and can clearly not ignore the mastery of THE Master as he continues to drum home the point like Pele and Sobers and many, many more that SKILL is just that and belongs to any and ALL.

  • 1716.John Galt: Reply to this comment

    Steyn, yet another 5for.

    Whats that 19 wickets this series? Against the best batting lineup in the world. Take a bow Sir Dale.

    Amazingly, for too many, India have bettered every SA innings bar the very first in he first test and that against the seeming best fast bowlers in the modern game presently.
    Also that very first innings failure can be ascribed to Indian administrators’ and coaches’ arrogance in not asking for at least one warm-up match.

  • 1720.Boo_Habana: Reply to this comment

    Kallis vs Prince is like Tendulkar vs Hudson

  • 1721.Boo_Habana: Reply to this comment

    SA played with 1 less bowler = Kallis … huge difference … also in India it was 1 – 1 … these 2 teams are just to close to each other … both should be nr 1 in the world . … .. .

  • 1722.E.T.: Reply to this comment

  • 1724.Boo_Habana: Reply to this comment

    there was the comparison between Ponting, Tendulkar & Kallis after 145 Inn… Kallis was on top … and then he also has 250+ test wickets …. Kallis = MASTER!

    @Boo_Habana : the problem with summerstrand is it’s close proximity with that ghetto called forest hill! That place is a relic of the old regime should be flushed down the toilet it deserves to be in!

    6 years ago i used to stay in the townhouse complex just next to forest hill and i took a walk with a friend to the garage and next thing while i was paying for the goods i bought, some scruffy r_etared-looking hoodlum who i could see was progeny of those scummy fishermen came to us to ask as where we’re from and that we should watch our back as forest hill was ‘theirs’ hahaha

    he was lucky we were in a good mood ;)

    Naughty Cape Spanish.

    Did you see the look of horror on Paul’s face when shouldering arms and being trapped LBW! You see Mr Harris – Newlands is tailor made for spinners – IF – you can actually spin a ball. I know it is not your fault, but I really think this may be your swansong! I have even seen JP Duminy spin a cricket ball and he is a make-shift spinner. Enjoy your last test mate! JP and Imran are waiting in the wings.

  • 1748.Bill Reyts: Reply to this comment

    As I said earlier – The Turbanator will spin India to victory, IF we don’t bat sensibly tomorrow.

  • 1749.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

    @nama1 : Harris’s record suggests something quite different to his supposedly “being average”.

    He’s ranked 15th best in the world, three places behind Vettori and with only Steyn and Morkel ahead of him in SA. (Kallis only ranks 22nd and Chucker Botha a lowly 54th)

    And his record places him as SA’s best-ever spinner since Tayfield. Substantially ahead of the likes of all those aforementioned SA legends, both pre and post isolation.

    Harris is a great.

  • 1750.Bill Reyts: Reply to this comment

    @TheTackler :

    Rankings are just that! To be a great you have to consistently take wickets, especially on spinner friendly tracks like Newlands. There is no doubt that he can stem the runs for a while, but taking wickets wins test on a regular basis. Harris is pretty ordinary and the rankings say a lot if they have him ranked 15. Anyways take the top three teams in the world and average 4 bowlers per team, that doesn’t even get him in to the top three teams as a specialist bowler. He makes it into the fourth best team. Explain that to me? How does that make him a great. The top four bowlers and six batsmen is what really matters in the rankings, if you want to throw the ranking system into your argument.
