The new face of Super Rugby

The new face of Super Rugby

Find out everything you need to know about the expanded competition in the bumper 156-page issue of SA Rugby magazine.

We kick off our Super Rugby preview section with an idiot’s guide to the new format (if you still don’t know how it works after reading this, we can’t help you). That’s followed by three pages on each South African team (how they are shaping up, player signings/losses, fixtures, previous log finishes, numbers that matter etc) and one page on each of the Kiwi and Aussie sides.

Also in the new issue:

– The Springboks failed to make any progress on their end-of-year tour

– Is Victor Matfield too conservative to be Bok captain?

– The All Blacks capped off an outstanding 2010 with their third Grand Slam in five years

– The Wallabies were frustratingly inconsistent on their end-of-year tour

– If England are to seriously challenge for the World Cup, they will have to stand up to the big beasts of the game

– Behind the swagger lies a secret diary that is driving England wing Chris Ashton to new heights

– Why the Barbarians are still relevant in the professional era

– Yet again the World Cup schedule helps the big nations and hinders the smaller ones. Why can’t the IRB make rugby’s showpiece event fair to all?

– Plus: Why Stuart Abbott is back in SA, Tim Noakes on the Boks ‘doping’ controversy, Heinrich Brussow’s injury battle, SA players in Europe

You’re probably right. 430 is too much. I was just throwing it out there. 380 more like it as long as Kallis, the king pin, comes in next or after AB at 5.
Still 2 days to go in this test – hold onto your hat.
    It’s enthralling. :D

skittle sticks nowhere nearly as exacting or skillful as tennis or squash or badminton, not even as pin point accurate or athletic as baseball, which at least also produces a winner at the end of the innings.

Also not in the least athletic like rugby or soccer or swimming, tennis, squash or badminton for that matter. Never mind the real Mackoy king of all sport types the pure athletics endeavors that ancient Greeks and Romans and other civilizations hailed as the epitome of human athletic appreciation, track and field.

More I think of it the more ridiculous a sporting code it emerges. All kinds of stupefied ramifications at how to bowl this hardarsed missile, can’t bend your arm this a way but you can bend it that a way, and defending your stumps with this block off the stump of a willow tree, padded up like a malletjie on makeshift mickey mouse megamayhem, jumping jamming jimminy crickets its the most ludicrous jelly wobble gobble di gook archaic paraphernalia of a so called sport effect known to man. Any aliens had to land on a cricket field while these earthlings cavorting around in their lily white flannels they’d think they’d slipped down a black hole into Mary Poppins land by mistake

Come to think of it Golf comes a mighty close second as the next most ridiculous sporting pastime that mankind has evolved out of momentary madness. .

Aaah yeah, a new year and some things stay the same……you still speaking kuk and smoking your usual.

Funny how your perverted opinion is always pushed as a given fact hey?

@skopiskoobidoo : Hi Skop, your feelings on cricket are rather like mine about tennis.

I HATE TENNIS – The dull, repetitive thud of balls, the grimaces of the players when they miss a shot…please don’t start me on womens tennis!

If I were given a free ticket to Wimbledon I would get rid of it as soon as possible!

    Cricket is beautiful…… Long Live Skittlesticks…!! ;-)

You know what? The Proteas will still get a result here. Mark my words.
And with that, I bid you farewell till tomorrow. For another enthralling day’s cricket.
    Don’t miss it.

tennis vs skittle sticks is not even worth a comparison on the same wavelength. Tennis leaves skittle sticks in the cold in a totally different league in any terms of outright athleticism, artistry, deft control, power, guile, creativity, energy, skill, you name it,…… the sheer classic artistry and athletic equipoise and character built mastery of any tennis player anywhere in the top 50, maybe even top 100 of ATP rankings is streaks and light years ahead of any poefta skittle sticks cavorting mamma’s boy moegoe

And that goes for squash, badminton, hell even table tennis requires more artistic control and skill, never mind most the other sport type disciplines..

Tennis requires the sharp focussed discipline of an outright warrior, skittle sticks just requires a big fat ego with a little pratassed gumption and a whole lotta lottery type luck to get you anywhere resembling quality or class..

  • 1808.skopiskoobidoo: Reply to this comment

and tennis you got to go out give it your best shot, master the conditions and your opponent and win, can’t go and hold out for a draw, or pray for rain, or sledge the umpire for a result or call it in when its out, or snick it to the third man and not walk. Tennis is cut and dried outright sporting mastery and skill and accomplishment aligned with fitness guile speed power and dexterity. Skittle sticks on the other hand pales into mediocre insignificance by comparison,

@skopiskoobidoo : 1800 skop, wasn’t the currie cup shared between the bulls & cheetahs 3 years ago? What was the point of playing a FINAL if there wasn’t going to be a winner?

  • 1810.skopiskoobidoo: Reply to this comment

on the very rare occasion in rugby (probably less than 1% of games) when two teams are so evenly matched that one cannot outright dominate the other you might get a draw as the end result.

Unlike skittle sticks or hockey or soccer where a draw is almost more often than not the end result and even desired by the defending team on the day. In rugby its the excepting rather than the rule, whereas in skittle sticks or quite often soccer its quite the other way round.

@>^..^< katman : And Harris’s limited repertoire of “two stock balls” and “no spin” have — miraculously, it seems — yielded no fewer than 102 test wickets with impressive best innings figures of 6/127 and match figures of 9/161…

Imagine the absolute havoc he’d wreak if ever he invented a third stock delivery!

  • 1812.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

@skopiskoobidoo : Dumb people don’t get it when it comes to cricket. And of those bright enough to get cricket, the dumber among their number don’t get spin bowling — they only get fast seam bowling.

To get spin, you’ve got to be among the smartest two percent of those already smart enough to get cricket.

The current poll (the one that’s been up there for about 4 weeks) has obviously been rigged.

Which 2010 victory saw the Springboks producing their best rugby?
    vs Wales in Cardiff
    6403 86%
    vs England in London
    615 8%
    vs France in Cape Town
    300 4%
    vs Australia in Pretoria
    67 1%
    vs Ireland in Dublin
    40 1%
    Total Votes: 7425

Ignoring the fact that the Boks played Wales twice in Cardiff in 2010

Sheesh, there have been some beauties around Adelaide a week or so ago. Had the one, 3 m gw swimming around a boat for about 15 minutes before it gave up…they were just about to go for a dip when it appeared! I assume they dropped the idea of a swim…

    @TheTackler :

  • 1834.Slartibartfast: Reply to this comment

But avoiding the question I assume there were none…but don’t worry, still a few months left.

  • 1835.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

Chemical WC portaloos for caravans and motorhomes — very “first-world”, one supposes? It might even get to the Third World later someday?

    Potaloo w/c’s………theres a W/C maybe the Kiwi’s could win :)

    What’s the prize? A bogroll?

  • 1838.Slartibartfast: Reply to this comment

You would think “first-world’ will have enough permanent accommodation not to need caravans, motorhomes or portaloos but I suppose it is a good second prize…

Anyway, what you going to do with the ‘new’ longdrop now?

@Slarty “only the smartest of the smart gets it” is correct. Of course it does require the reader to have the ability to comprehend smartest as singular. Probably not enough crayons in that box.
