The new face of Super Rugby

The new face of Super Rugby

Find out everything you need to know about the expanded competition in the bumper 156-page issue of SA Rugby magazine.

We kick off our Super Rugby preview section with an idiot’s guide to the new format (if you still don’t know how it works after reading this, we can’t help you). That’s followed by three pages on each South African team (how they are shaping up, player signings/losses, fixtures, previous log finishes, numbers that matter etc) and one page on each of the Kiwi and Aussie sides.

Also in the new issue:

– The Springboks failed to make any progress on their end-of-year tour

– Is Victor Matfield too conservative to be Bok captain?

– The All Blacks capped off an outstanding 2010 with their third Grand Slam in five years

– The Wallabies were frustratingly inconsistent on their end-of-year tour

– If England are to seriously challenge for the World Cup, they will have to stand up to the big beasts of the game

– Behind the swagger lies a secret diary that is driving England wing Chris Ashton to new heights

– Why the Barbarians are still relevant in the professional era

– Yet again the World Cup schedule helps the big nations and hinders the smaller ones. Why can’t the IRB make rugby’s showpiece event fair to all?

– Plus: Why Stuart Abbott is back in SA, Tim Noakes on the Boks ‘doping’ controversy, Heinrich Brussow’s injury battle, SA players in Europe

@>^..^< katman : 1903 – Katman, 38 is very hot and too hot for me, but Quatar is far, far hotter. Imagine the heat of Cape Town right now and add another 10 degrees to it. Quatar in the summer is between 45/48 that is now serious heat, throw in the humidity too. Have no idea how they got the world cup. Crazy, they will have to have aircon stadiums. So all stadiums will be indoors for that tourney, no team can play in that heat not ever.

@stormersboy : LOL…ja…i have a big meeting at 12 tomorrow…just came up so thats my plans for the cricket tomorrow in its glory….but meeting too big an opportunity to pass up..

@grant10 : 1906 – Grant, I worked in Saudi years back the temp in the summer was 48 everyday and somedays over 50. Can you imagine that kinda heat? Serious heat that.

Was 34 here in Umhlanga on Sunday with over 90% humidity it felt horrible, the humidity makes it feel much worse than 34. Today just rain and loving it.

@grant10 : 1910 – Grant if you not posting tomorrow. All the best for your Birthday buddy.

@Puma : Apparently they have some kind of stadium cooling plan. I’ll believe it when I see it.

    @Puma : jeepers….i struggle when it hits the 30 s , cant even imagine 40 s !

Thanks Puma…i have a magic evening planned for the bday…..and had the best festive season ever….so hoping 2011 is a special year, not just for me but everyone on the planet!

@grant10 : Good luck and Happy Birthday if you aren’t around!

  • 1916.Puma: Reply to this comment

@grant10 : 1914 – Grant, I struggle when it is 28 never mind 38. I struggled with the heat in Saudi bad, but was so much younger then, so handled it better than I would do now. That was serious heat. You go outside it feels like some kinda hot pressure pressing down on you head all the time. Horrible, have no idea how people can live in that heat, cause you not indoors in the aircon all of the time.

Had a brilliant festive season this year, just party after party, but time to put the breaks on. We have a special evening planned tonight too. After tonight going on a serious health diet..hahaha. Say it every year, but only lasts a week or two with me. This time want to do it for a month. Well hoping.

@>^..^< katman : 1913 – Katman if they don’t cool down the stadiums no-one will go. People can’t sit in that heat, not ever. I have experienced it and it is just damn horrible. I used to do some running in the desert there on a Thursday afternoon. We finished early on a Thursday those days. Well one could have died running in that heat, was crazy. Think we do kinda daft stuff when we younger. Used to run there early before going to work. 5am was around 35 already but running in the desert at 3pm when it is 48 degrees is lunacy.

Petersen is out already, in only the 2nd over of the day. Is he really the right man to open for SA? Hasn’t impressed at all.

SA are a batsman too light… how Steyn is our number 8 boggles the mind, particularly when our keeper at number 7 can’t string any runs together.

1 more wicket here and we are in the dwang.

  • 1924.>^..^< katman: Reply to this comment

Petersen out – lbw to Harbajan. 53 for 3. Fckit.

@Slartibartfast : You don’t need PERMANENT accommodation for people who are only temporary. You need TEMPORARY accommodation for them — which, of course, a first-world country like NZ can, and will, supply. To first-world standards, of course. Right down to the portable WCs in the caravans.

  • 1932.>^..^< katman: Reply to this comment

@Mighty_Horua : Because it’s most irregular for Sreesanth to still be bowling at Amla when he’s already out.

“The Turbanator” is ripping the yarpie top order to shreds with his slow bowling…

4 wickets already, and for only 10 runs and in no more than 5 overs!

Great to see a spinner performing his craft!

  • 1938.>^..^< katman: Reply to this comment

    @TheTackler : Yep, he’s a spinner. There’s only one at Newlands today.

  • 1939.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

@>^..^< katman : Buy your supplies here. You won’t need a lot of it seeing as you’ll be back on the plane at the end of pool play.

  • 1940.>^..^< katman: Reply to this comment

Lobbing it up at 80km/h doesn’t necessarily constitute spin.

No matter how you try and spin it.

Harbhajan is a master of his craft.

Harris isn’t. He bowls slow left arm – and very straight.

  • 1943.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

Harbhajan is another guile-bowler. Uses only just enough turn to create doubt — the way to do it! Nothing extravagant in his deliveries. But he’s got the yarpies in terror: spellbound and crease-bound. And his team-mates are mocking their quaking opponents on their own pitch!

@TheTackler : We’re accustomed to super soft two, even three ply bogroll here. Nothing but the best pampering for our precious posteriors. Are you prepared? Have you stocked your spaza shop with the plushest of the plush?

@Puma : I’m good mate. Had a good festive break, raring to go this year. I love cricket, watch when I can. My wife and i used to go and watch a lot of it, B.C. (Before Children). Not as much time for that lately, but hoping to get back to it soon. I’ll be following it today from the office on Cricinfo.com. They have a good live feed. Although by the way things are going it looks like it’s going to be a 4 day test at this rate. Hope not.

@TheTackler : Perhaps in your day in Proklemasie Heuwel, old timer, or wherever you are from. But this is the modern era of bottom wiping. Since readmission we have utilised only the softest, snuggest loo paper known to man.
