The new face of Super Rugby
20 Dec 2010
Find out everything you need to know about the expanded competition in the bumper 156-page issue of SA Rugby magazine.
We kick off our Super Rugby preview section with an idiot’s guide to the new format (if you still don’t know how it works after reading this, we can’t help you). That’s followed by three pages on each South African team (how they are shaping up, player signings/losses, fixtures, previous log finishes, numbers that matter etc) and one page on each of the Kiwi and Aussie sides.
Also in the new issue:
– The Springboks failed to make any progress on their end-of-year tour
– Is Victor Matfield too conservative to be Bok captain?
– The All Blacks capped off an outstanding 2010 with their third Grand Slam in five years
– The Wallabies were frustratingly inconsistent on their end-of-year tour
– If England are to seriously challenge for the World Cup, they will have to stand up to the big beasts of the game
– Behind the swagger lies a secret diary that is driving England wing Chris Ashton to new heights
– Why the Barbarians are still relevant in the professional era
– Yet again the World Cup schedule helps the big nations and hinders the smaller ones. Why can’t the IRB make rugby’s showpiece event fair to all?
– Plus: Why Stuart Abbott is back in SA, Tim Noakes on the Boks ‘doping’ controversy, Heinrich Brussow’s injury battle, SA players in Europe

@carol : Excited about the Ashes, I see
England is playing well but it is hardly the World Cup now is it, although winning the Ashes seem to be enough to get an OBE,CBE,MBE or any other pat on the back, why is this?

@JL1 : I see open top bus parades during London city lunch hours. Perhaps even a heroic song by Susan Boyle.
6 Jan 2011, 00:08 am
@>^..^< katman : Maybe even a Bank Holiday
6 Jan 2011, 00:09 am
@JL1 : @>^..^< katman :
lol, they are very amusing, its still a very popular game over here, virtually every little village has 2 things, a pub and a cricket pitch.
all i want to know is where did pietersen learn to do the ‘living it large’ barmy army dance? hell there cant be many bigger twats on the world stage. geezus what a preener.

@cab : You know he goes by the name of FIGJAM…..Fck I am good just ask me
6 Jan 2011, 01:52 am
lol, damn arrogant fool that one.
6 Jan 2011, 06:09 am
But he’s GOOD, and easily good enough to stroll into the Proteas team ahead of deadbeats like Alviro or even Ashwell.
6 Jan 2011, 06:41 am
Just realised that the Aussie cricketers are touring SA in Sept/Oct this year.
Oh well, the country will go into shut-down mode sporting wise again.

@I am a stormer : \
Sheesh,better start saving up some brownie points with the boss…
6 Jan 2011, 07:28 am
@I am a stormer : Aussies will be keen to earn a measure of redemption by really STICKING it to the yarpies…
6 Jan 2011, 07:37 am
@TheTackler :
Ja just like they doing it to England at home…
6 Jan 2011, 07:44 am
See…
Australia 280 & 124/4 (43.4 ov)
England 644
Australia trail by 240 runs with 6 wickets remaining
6 Jan 2011, 07:49 am
@Slartibartfast :
So glad Clarke failed yet again!
Time is up!
6 Jan 2011, 07:56 am
Winning with an Innings and three times in 5 matches!
Ozzies down and out!
Damn even their u21 couldve been better!
6 Jan 2011, 07:57 am
@Mighty Horua :
Hahahaha I am listening to the ABC Radio and they saying his performance gave Ponting a second life
How kuk can you play?
6 Jan 2011, 08:01 am
@Mighty Horua :
Already the first time ever they lost two games in one series with an innings and some…
Highest ever score by the Poms in Australia…
Second fastest Ashes 100 by a Pom…
Record keep tumbling!
6 Jan 2011, 08:07 am
“In conjunction with the McGrath Foundation, the army unveiled their own pink shirts with the tag ”England’s Barmy Army like boobs so look after yours. Be breast aware”.”
6 Jan 2011, 08:13 am
Just dont know how the once mighty Ozzies will get out of this slump!
Apart from occasional Mitchell J performances, no bowlers in Oz
Although with technical difficulties, I say stick with Phil Hughes
Usman to captain
Apart from that i dont think the Aussies will get their hands on that urn for at least 10 years!
6 Jan 2011, 08:22 am
In the whole match (P)Usman scored 58 of 193 balls ..useless!!
6 Jan 2011, 08:26 am
@Mighty Horua :
They will get out…eventually. They should have dropped Ponting two years ago, he is clueless and bowled his best bowlers, first Lee and then Johnson into the ground. Now they just fluffing around.
161/5 with Mr Cricket gone…
6 Jan 2011, 08:29 am
Forest Hill scum
Outta here!
6 Jan 2011, 08:30 am
@Slartibartfast : They’re being humiliated by 4-yarp England, so that’s not redemption. Whacking Biff’s boys — as usual — in their own backyards…
Now that would be redemption.
They’ve done it plenty of times before.
6 Jan 2011, 08:34 am
@TheTackler :
Har har har jou favourite krieket span is kuk Tackles, they won’t get out of this hole for a few years.
6 Jan 2011, 08:45 am
@TheTackler : Aussies at present not up to running with the big dogs: India, SA, England. They need to sharpen their teeth on their cricketing equivalent, teams like Bangladesh and the Black Ferns.
6 Jan 2011, 08:49 am
@Taahirah : Aussies will always lift their game enough to place their foot on a yarpie throat. As per just about always…
This is a re-run, not a new movie! And you know it.
6 Jan 2011, 08:52 am
@TheTackler :
Just like they had their paws on the Ashes for like forever…and even longer losing a series against SA in Australia…some things do change. But keep up the lame stirring efforts.
6 Jan 2011, 08:58 am
@TheTackler : Come on Tackler. You can do better than that. Even if they lifted their game a couple of notches they will still fall short. That Aussie aura is gone.
6 Jan 2011, 09:01 am
@Taahirah :
Tackles lost his touch…
6 Jan 2011, 09:11 am
Hey Tackles, for someone who specialises in backing teams because they are winners, you’re not doing too well at the moment.
6 Jan 2011, 09:12 am
@Slartibartfast : Its sad really. Its like watching the demise of a one time sporting great who has clung on to long. Think Pete Sampras, Thiery Henry, Joost van der Westhuizen, Lance Klusener. We cheer them on, the memories of their great past feats making us believe they still can. Only to be dissapointed as a good dose of reality causes them to crash and burn. Tackler, its time to call it a day mate. Your number’s been up for a year or so now. Ride off into the sunset, battle-hardened warrior.
6 Jan 2011, 09:15 am
Australia are on the downhill. They had a good run for a long time but that’s all over now.
They might be able to knock over the Kiwis on present form, but then who can’t.
6 Jan 2011, 09:17 am
@Great White Shark(Predawn) : Bangladesh.
Oh no, wait…
6 Jan 2011, 09:26 am
@Taahirah : Oh, they’ll up their game to whack those yarpies … no worries! Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Wait and see! And BE AFRAID!
6 Jan 2011, 09:30 am
@TheTackler(TheTackler) : Even with your man, Paul Harris, wreaking havoc in their batting line-up?
6 Jan 2011, 09:52 am
Superkallis fragile ribsticks hairpiece halitosis.
6 Jan 2011, 09:53 am
The halitosis bit may be inaccurate, I was struggling with the rhyme.
6 Jan 2011, 10:06 am
Not sure where all this Japie fan confidence is coming from with regards to Australia?
The last time they met Aus they got whipped at home… managing only a draw for the home and away… and the last time they met the Poms they only managed a draw at home!
****** the Protea’s have only managed one win from five series’ in the last two years.
6 Jan 2011, 10:08 am
@bryce_in_oz(bryce_in_oz) : Er, it’s called “current form”. And based on this, you’re fooked.
6 Jan 2011, 10:18 am
@>^..^< katman(katman) :
History has shown that the top 2 ranked test teams ‘usually’ need to have 3 batsman and 3 bowlers in the Reliance top 20′s… the Protea’s have Kallis, AB, Amla, Smith in batting list and Steyn, Morkel and ‘surprise surprise’ Harris @ 15 in the top 20 (with King Kallis just outside)…
That’s a big STFU to his detractors… whether he spins the ball or not!
6 Jan 2011, 10:23 am
@>^..^< katman(katman) :
Er I’m a Protea’s supporter… and on ‘current form’ Harris is the 15th best bowler in the world… above Sharma, above Kallis, above Sreesanth…
Them’s the ‘facts’ no matter whether he spins the ball or not…
6 Jan 2011, 10:28 am
morning Kat. You on holiday mate? You should be at the cricket, like I plan to be later this pm, work permitting.
I’m going to put this out there and see what flies in.
