The new face of Super Rugby

The new face of Super Rugby

Find out everything you need to know about the expanded competition in the bumper 156-page issue of SA Rugby magazine.

We kick off our Super Rugby preview section with an idiot’s guide to the new format (if you still don’t know how it works after reading this, we can’t help you). That’s followed by three pages on each South African team (how they are shaping up, player signings/losses, fixtures, previous log finishes, numbers that matter etc) and one page on each of the Kiwi and Aussie sides.

Also in the new issue:

– The Springboks failed to make any progress on their end-of-year tour

– Is Victor Matfield too conservative to be Bok captain?

– The All Blacks capped off an outstanding 2010 with their third Grand Slam in five years

– The Wallabies were frustratingly inconsistent on their end-of-year tour

– If England are to seriously challenge for the World Cup, they will have to stand up to the big beasts of the game

– Behind the swagger lies a secret diary that is driving England wing Chris Ashton to new heights

– Why the Barbarians are still relevant in the professional era

– Yet again the World Cup schedule helps the big nations and hinders the smaller ones. Why can’t the IRB make rugby’s showpiece event fair to all?

– Plus: Why Stuart Abbott is back in SA, Tim Noakes on the Boks ‘doping’ controversy, Heinrich Brussow’s injury battle, SA players in Europe

    @carol : Excited about the Ashes, I see

    England is playing well but it is hardly the World Cup now is it, although winning the Ashes seem to be enough to get an OBE,CBE,MBE or any other pat on the back, why is this?

    But he’s GOOD, and easily good enough to stroll into the Proteas team ahead of deadbeats like Alviro or even Ashwell.

    Just realised that the Aussie cricketers are touring SA in Sept/Oct this year.
    Oh well, the country will go into shut-down mode sporting wise again.

  • 2216.Slartibartfast: Reply to this comment

    @Mighty Horua :

    Already the first time ever they lost two games in one series with an innings and some…

    Highest ever score by the Poms in Australia…

    Second fastest Ashes 100 by a Pom…

    Record keep tumbling!

    Just dont know how the once mighty Ozzies will get out of this slump!

    Apart from occasional Mitchell J performances, no bowlers in Oz

    Although with technical difficulties, I say stick with Phil Hughes

    Usman to captain

    Apart from that i dont think the Aussies will get their hands on that urn for at least 10 years!

  • 2219.Mighty_Horua: Reply to this comment

    In the whole match (P)Usman scored 58 of 193 balls ..useless!!

  • 2220.Slartibartfast: Reply to this comment

    @Mighty Horua :

    They will get out…eventually. They should have dropped Ponting two years ago, he is clueless and bowled his best bowlers, first Lee and then Johnson into the ground. Now they just fluffing around.

    161/5 with Mr Cricket gone…

    Outta here!

  • 2222.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

    @Slartibartfast : They’re being humiliated by 4-yarp England, so that’s not redemption. Whacking Biff’s boys — as usual — in their own backyards…

    Now that would be redemption.

    They’ve done it plenty of times before.

    Har har har jou favourite krieket span is kuk Tackles, they won’t get out of this hole for a few years.

  • 2224.Taahirah: Reply to this comment

    @TheTackler : Aussies at present not up to running with the big dogs: India, SA, England. They need to sharpen their teeth on their cricketing equivalent, teams like Bangladesh and the Black Ferns.

  • 2225.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

    @Taahirah : Aussies will always lift their game enough to place their foot on a yarpie throat. As per just about always…

    This is a re-run, not a new movie! And you know it.

  • 2226.Slartibartfast: Reply to this comment

    @TheTackler :

    Just like they had their paws on the Ashes for like forever…and even longer losing a series against SA in Australia…some things do change. But keep up the lame stirring efforts.

  • 2227.Taahirah: Reply to this comment

    @TheTackler : Come on Tackler. You can do better than that. Even if they lifted their game a couple of notches they will still fall short. That Aussie aura is gone.

  • 2228.Slartibartfast: Reply to this comment

    @Taahirah :

    Tackles lost his touch…

  • 2229.>^..^< katman: Reply to this comment

    Hey Tackles, for someone who specialises in backing teams because they are winners, you’re not doing too well at the moment.

  • 2230.Taahirah: Reply to this comment

    @Slartibartfast : Its sad really. Its like watching the demise of a one time sporting great who has clung on to long. Think Pete Sampras, Thiery Henry, Joost van der Westhuizen, Lance Klusener. We cheer them on, the memories of their great past feats making us believe they still can. Only to be dissapointed as a good dose of reality causes them to crash and burn. Tackler, its time to call it a day mate. Your number’s been up for a year or so now. Ride off into the sunset, battle-hardened warrior.

  • 2231.Great White Shark: Reply to this comment

    Australia are on the downhill. They had a good run for a long time but that’s all over now.

    They might be able to knock over the Kiwis on present form, but then who can’t.

  • 2232.Taahirah: Reply to this comment

    @Great White Shark(Predawn) : Bangladesh.
    Oh no, wait…

  • 2233.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

    @Taahirah : Oh, they’ll up their game to whack those yarpies … no worries! Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Wait and see! And BE AFRAID!

    Not sure where all this Japie fan confidence is coming from with regards to Australia?

    The last time they met Aus they got whipped at home… managing only a draw for the home and away… and the last time they met the Poms they only managed a draw at home!

    ****** the Protea’s have only managed one win from five series’ in the last two years.

  • 2238.>^..^< katman: Reply to this comment

    @bryce_in_oz(bryce_in_oz) : Er, it’s called “current form”. And based on this, you’re fooked.

  • 2239.bryce_in_oz: Reply to this comment

    @>^..^< katman(katman) :

    History has shown that the top 2 ranked test teams ‘usually’ need to have 3 batsman and 3 bowlers in the Reliance top 20′s… the Protea’s have Kallis, AB, Amla, Smith in batting list and Steyn, Morkel and ‘surprise surprise’ Harris @ 15 in the top 20 (with King Kallis just outside)…

    That’s a big STFU to his detractors… whether he spins the ball or not!

  • 2240.bryce_in_oz: Reply to this comment

    @>^..^< katman(katman) :

    Er I’m a Protea’s supporter… and on ‘current form’ Harris is the 15th best bowler in the world… above Sharma, above Kallis, above Sreesanth…

    Them’s the ‘facts’ no matter whether he spins the ball or not…
