Beast stays with Sharks

Beast stays with Sharks

The Lions have failed to bring Beast Mtawarira to Joburg.

According to The Mercury, the loosehead prop has signed a three-year contract with the Sharks and been pushed up to the same salary bracket as the likes of John Smit, despite being a relatively inexperienced Bok.

‘The Beast is a big part of the Sharks having come from nowhere to advance from the Sharks Academy to the senior team and then to the Springboks,’ coach John Plumtree told the newspaper. ‘He has gone on to become one of the best loosehead props in the world and our coaching staff are excited about continuing his development.’

However, while Mtawarira’s immediate future has been determined, the boardroom battle between the Sharks and Lions could continue well into 2011 after the Sharks lodged a complaint against the Lions with Saru. The Sharks said the Lions offered Mtawarira an alternative contract when he already had a binding contract with the Sharks, which was in breach of the governing body’s regulations.

ah some rugby news, how was he ever not on the same salary as smit to start with, Beast is probably the best LH in world rugby at the moment and with Bismarck and Alberts is probably the Sharks team imo.

  • 4.Oxy moron: Reply to this comment

@cab : Yes, Sharks are going to have a really solid year. Consistency with Running Rugby.

  • 5.grant10: Reply to this comment

best for boks that the current bok front row stays intact at the sharks

  • 6.Tacitus: Reply to this comment

    Point 1:

Anyone paying John Smit more than Beast Mtawarira needs their head read. In fact, if Smit is earning more than Willem Alberts, Jean Deysel or Bismark du Plessis then we have a prime case of fruitless and wasteful expenditure on our hands.

Heck, based on his current abilities, Smit should be no higher than a mid bracket earner – on a similar level to Keegan Daniel, Hargreaves or Adrian Jacobs at the Sharks.

    Point 2:

The Sharks really don’t have a leg to stand on with this complaint, considering their own actions over the last few seasons.

My point is that the Sharks are rather hypocritical if they complain about other teams doing exactly the same thing they’ve been doing for the last 2 years.

The Beast “a relatively inexperienced Bok” what a load of BS. 3 years with Boks and 26 tests.

John Smit doesn’t deserve any money cause he is a useless spare wheel to any team he is with.

Look in the mirror John…retire already PLEASE!

  • 21.sharks_lover: Reply to this comment

@daydreamer : look in the mirror urself , you will see a moron, enough said

“Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl commented that the Sharks are paying “top dollar” to keep the highly sought after 26-year-old front ranker in Durban after increasing Mtawarira’s salary to that of seasoned Springboks such as John Smit.”

Ummmm if you wanna hang onto your players then pay them what they are worth!

The real winner in this scenario is the Beast as he doesn’t have to leave Durban & gets a pay rise.
I reckon he deserves every cent he earns from his new contract & he can thank the Lions for making the Sharks realise his value!

there go the hypocritical Sharks, bunch of arseholes their whole management! straueli was poaching the ebersohn brothers just a couple if months back and the kids had to tell him to wait for the ‘window period’ but he went on and gave them ultimatums! now he’s one to lodge complaints with SARU, what a w_anker!

    ROAR!

I can’t believe that those miser Orks were paying Beast an absolute pittance.

Now thanks to the Lions the Orks were forced to pay Beast a market related salary (unbudgeted of course) hell we even forced them to pay JPP, Kanko and fat boy Smit a decent salary.

Orks know this … the cold war will continue and no player is safe from a Gumede cheque. The good guys will do to you what the USA did to the USSR … bankrupt you.

    p.s.

Kallis congratulations on your 40th ton. 1 more than Ponting and coming in 7 less tests WOW.

  • 26.Tacitus: Reply to this comment

I can’t help but wonder whether the Lions would also have offered R14m for John Smit…seeing as Beast and Smit are apparently on a par as far as the Sharks are concerned.

  • 27.BlackShark: Reply to this comment

Let’s be honest, Sharks fans: the Sharks shouldn’t be acting all self-righteous on this one. Remember the Mapoe saga?

I bet Brian van Zyl can’t look his kids in the eye. I’d be bloody ashamed to be related to/associated with such a blatant, underhanded hypocrite. Hope the court case embarrasses the hell out of him.

  • 41.Great White Shark: Reply to this comment

If the Lions had Beast, Butch, Pienaar and Steyn it STILL wouldn’t help them.

It goes down to team dynamic, spirit and a desire to win.

That Joburg zol and party ethic does very little for serious rugby players.

I believe that our group will be the most closely contested group in this coming super competition. The Sharks, Bulls and Stormers will play well, but occasionally so will the Cheetahs and Lions. All the teams can actually (and have in the last year) have the beating of the other teams, particularly at home.

This means that in my opinion we will be unlikely to host a home semi, which means a semi final place at best for our sides. But thems the breaks I guess…

And I’m glad that Beast is at the Sharks. Good to keep that front row together. we’ll need that sort of “understanding” come WC time.

  • 49.Redlion is doing pre-season conditioning: Reply to this comment

Orks will not make it into the play-offs … not with the Cheatahs and Mitch’s Lions around.

  • 50.Great White Shark: Reply to this comment

The Cheetahs and Lions will make South Africa proud this year..and when I woke up my coffee was cold.

New year, same tired old story.

Lions please…playing the Aussie and Kiwi teams are not the same as playing the Wannabes and All Blecks.
