Beast stays with Sharks
5 Jan 2011
The Lions have failed to bring Beast Mtawarira to Joburg.
According to The Mercury, the loosehead prop has signed a three-year contract with the Sharks and been pushed up to the same salary bracket as the likes of John Smit, despite being a relatively inexperienced Bok.
‘The Beast is a big part of the Sharks having come from nowhere to advance from the Sharks Academy to the senior team and then to the Springboks,’ coach John Plumtree told the newspaper. ‘He has gone on to become one of the best loosehead props in the world and our coaching staff are excited about continuing his development.’
However, while Mtawarira’s immediate future has been determined, the boardroom battle between the Sharks and Lions could continue well into 2011 after the Sharks lodged a complaint against the Lions with Saru. The Sharks said the Lions offered Mtawarira an alternative contract when he already had a binding contract with the Sharks, which was in breach of the governing body’s regulations.

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTT will still ring out at King’s Park!
5 Jan 2011, 15:39 pm
ah some rugby news, how was he ever not on the same salary as smit to start with, Beast is probably the best LH in world rugby at the moment and with Bismarck and Alberts is probably the Sharks team imo.
5 Jan 2011, 16:08 pm
@cab : Yes, Sharks are going to have a really solid year. Consistency with Running Rugby.
5 Jan 2011, 16:11 pm
best for boks that the current bok front row stays intact at the sharks
5 Jan 2011, 16:12 pm
Point 1:
Anyone paying John Smit more than Beast Mtawarira needs their head read. In fact, if Smit is earning more than Willem Alberts, Jean Deysel or Bismark du Plessis then we have a prime case of fruitless and wasteful expenditure on our hands.
Heck, based on his current abilities, Smit should be no higher than a mid bracket earner – on a similar level to Keegan Daniel, Hargreaves or Adrian Jacobs at the Sharks.
Point 2:
The Sharks really don’t have a leg to stand on with this complaint, considering their own actions over the last few seasons.
5 Jan 2011, 16:16 pm
@Tacitus :
Point 2:
Depends on whether they broke the law don’t you think.
Or in other words who has better lawyers.
5 Jan 2011, 16:17 pm
@Oxy moron :
Last I heard, the court ruled against the Sharks in the Mapoe case.
5 Jan 2011, 16:20 pm
what a new article..?!?! so the rumours that keo closed down wasnt true after all..
other rugby websites at least had some articles the last while..
5 Jan 2011, 16:24 pm
@Tacitus :
So therefore neither do the Lions
5 Jan 2011, 16:28 pm
@Oxy moron :
My point is that the Sharks are rather hypocritical if they complain about other teams doing exactly the same thing they’ve been doing for the last 2 years.
5 Jan 2011, 16:36 pm
@Tacitus : again your lack of knowledge about anything comes to the fore , as longs as its blue you think ur knowledgable
the bulls can only wish they had john smit
for a clown you sure like pointing fingers?? why not worry about your team thats on the DOWN

Hehehe. Got to admire their optimism.
5 Jan 2011, 17:13 pm
The Beast “a relatively inexperienced Bok” what a load of BS. 3 years with Boks and 26 tests.
John Smit doesn’t deserve any money cause he is a useless spare wheel to any team he is with.
Look in the mirror John…retire already PLEASE!
5 Jan 2011, 17:21 pm
@daydreamer : look in the mirror urself , you will see a moron, enough said
5 Jan 2011, 17:25 pm
“Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl commented that the Sharks are paying “top dollar” to keep the highly sought after 26-year-old front ranker in Durban after increasing Mtawarira’s salary to that of seasoned Springboks such as John Smit.”
Ummmm if you wanna hang onto your players then pay them what they are worth!
The real winner in this scenario is the Beast as he doesn’t have to leave Durban & gets a pay rise.
I reckon he deserves every cent he earns from his new contract & he can thank the Lions for making the Sharks realise his value!
5 Jan 2011, 17:26 pm
there go the hypocritical Sharks, bunch of arseholes their whole management! straueli was poaching the ebersohn brothers just a couple if months back and the kids had to tell him to wait for the ‘window period’ but he went on and gave them ultimatums! now he’s one to lodge complaints with SARU, what a w_anker!

KEO writers, the best “copy and paste” journalists the rugby world has seen.
This site is a joke. Go to Rugby365 if you want some proper rugby journalism.
5 Jan 2011, 19:42 pm
ROAR!
I can’t believe that those miser Orks were paying Beast an absolute pittance.
Now thanks to the Lions the Orks were forced to pay Beast a market related salary (unbudgeted of course) hell we even forced them to pay JPP, Kanko and fat boy Smit a decent salary.
Orks know this … the cold war will continue and no player is safe from a Gumede cheque. The good guys will do to you what the USA did to the USSR … bankrupt you.
p.s.
Kallis congratulations on your 40th ton. 1 more than Ponting and coming in 7 less tests WOW.
5 Jan 2011, 21:24 pm
I can’t help but wonder whether the Lions would also have offered R14m for John Smit…seeing as Beast and Smit are apparently on a par as far as the Sharks are concerned.
5 Jan 2011, 21:53 pm
Let’s be honest, Sharks fans: the Sharks shouldn’t be acting all self-righteous on this one. Remember the Mapoe saga?
5 Jan 2011, 22:49 pm
I bet Brian van Zyl can’t look his kids in the eye. I’d be bloody ashamed to be related to/associated with such a blatant, underhanded hypocrite. Hope the court case embarrasses the hell out of him.

6 Jan 2011, 07:00 am
@Tacitus :
Legally, The Sharks have a leg to stand on if it is found that the Lions did breach regulations.
6 Jan 2011, 07:08 am
Don’t you girls worry about who’s wrong or right…worry about the coming Super 15.
The Sharks are gonna get you Gautengalengers!!
6 Jan 2011, 08:08 am
@Great White Shark : blah blah blah…the Sharks are the last team to be crying about this…how did mapoe end up training at the shark tank while contractually bound to the cheetahs? harold verster told van zyl from the get go to leave mapoe but the sharks continued till they lost multiple arbitration cases. bloody hypocrites!
6 Jan 2011, 08:10 am
@Mighty Grogg :
Relax Matey – nobody comes here for the journalism.
It’s rather like choosing the Spur over the Famous Butcher’s Grill for supper. You don’t go for the chef, but for the vibe and to let the kids have a play!
6 Jan 2011, 08:28 am
@Mongril :
Grogg does not understand what a blog is, a place where you DO copy and paste articles. It is not a news site with proper journalists…blerrie hell, just look at their pictures at the bottom of this page for confirmation!
6 Jan 2011, 08:33 am
@Tacitus :
Point 1 – Disagree , John Smit is the Bok Captain up until last year and should things change for him salary wise it will happen this year when he gets reviewed.
6 Jan 2011, 08:39 am
171/7…Tremlett on a hatrick…
6 Jan 2011, 08:48 am
Beast would never have gone anyway. His church and a winning team are both in Currie Cup country.
6 Jan 2011, 08:50 am
@Mongril.
You’re right, that’s just what this site is, a kiddies playground.
Cheers
6 Jan 2011, 09:13 am
bloody Shark hypocrites!
6 Jan 2011, 09:19 am
If the Lions had Beast, Butch, Pienaar and Steyn it STILL wouldn’t help them.
It goes down to team dynamic, spirit and a desire to win.
That Joburg zol and party ethic does very little for serious rugby players.
6 Jan 2011, 09:25 am
@Great White Shark(Predawn) : Roar
dawn luv why you so scared if the Lions?
6 Jan 2011, 09:25 am
@Great White Shark(Predawn) : Roar
dawn luv why you so scared of the Lions?
6 Jan 2011, 09:26 am
@Great White Shark(Predawn) : Ha ha, you sound like you desperately want that to be true.
6 Jan 2011, 09:26 am
Yes!
6 Jan 2011, 09:27 am
Come the Super 15 and the Lions are terrified of their own shadows.
6 Jan 2011, 09:28 am
Roar
6 Jan 2011, 09:28 am
I believe that our group will be the most closely contested group in this coming super competition. The Sharks, Bulls and Stormers will play well, but occasionally so will the Cheetahs and Lions. All the teams can actually (and have in the last year) have the beating of the other teams, particularly at home.
This means that in my opinion we will be unlikely to host a home semi, which means a semi final place at best for our sides. But thems the breaks I guess…
And I’m glad that Beast is at the Sharks. Good to keep that front row together. we’ll need that sort of “understanding” come WC time.
6 Jan 2011, 09:30 am
Orks will not make it into the play-offs … not with the Cheatahs and Mitch’s Lions around.
6 Jan 2011, 09:35 am
The Cheetahs and Lions will make South Africa proud this year..and when I woke up my coffee was cold.
New year, same tired old story.
Lions please…playing the Aussie and Kiwi teams are not the same as playing the Wannabes and All Blecks.
