Stormers shut out Maties

A Stormers XV kept Stellenbosch scoreless in a warm-up match at Coetzenburg on Saturday.

Coach Allister Coetzee targeted this fixture as an opportunity to trial fringe players. Apart from the 17 points for, he will pleased that his charges kept Maties scoreless.

Tythan Adams scored the Stormers first try, and Elgar Watts’ conversion ensured they went to the break with a 7-0 lead. Adams scored his second in the next 40, while Michael van der Spuy also got on the scorecard.

‘Conditions were not easy with the wind and the Maties offered tough opposition,’ said Coetzee. ‘We got the answers we were looking for, with some players impressing.

‘All in all though, it is great to be giving players the vital game time they need in preparation for the season ahead.’

The Stormers will play the Lions next Friday in the first fixture of the pre-season Tri-series.

think it must be a backup role, most will be rightfully very upset if he is selected over beast and Bismarck, who are at the top of the game. that can’t justified just for leadership. And I don’t think smit wants to play 3, tho I thought he did well in tha role but bulked up unecessarily, which means he must be flexible and happy to play backup. Tell you what tho I’d rather have smit than matfield in the tightloose, the latter offers zip in that aspect these days, be ntersting to see how bekker goes in the s15

Agree with you about the selection and the role to be played so late in the day.

    The WC is almost tomorrow.

Read this sentence again very carefully. Don’t tell me that you actually speak like that. You must be so boring to engage in conversation. See what I mean when I say you can’t write. Just one example.

“The thing is you are sucking things out of your thumb/s and that/those thumb/s has/have been in COLONS because of your indicated ano-rectal fisting fetish that took you about 90mins.plus to state(12.56am to 2.26am) Sat. morning early.”

it’s going to be damn interesting to see how the selection unfolds especially with the brilliant brussow returning from injury and alberts doing so well on tour. The springboks I believe have the best set of forwards in the world at the moment and the pack is even better than 2007. The AB forwards are damn good too, but there backs are the real danger. Should be v interesting to watch the first Bok clash vs SBW and how they take him on. The Maestro is planning as we speak…

Can u imagine a midfield of Carter, SBW and Kahui? Holy **** ek se.

@E.T.(ET) : Not sure if you had any association with Johnny Issel but he passed away today… We shared some time when he was in “Exile” in London.. We also shared some “experiences” in Belgravia Rd

    Robzim knows him well..

Rob, Trust you heard the news

    Hamba Kahle Comrade Johnny… RIP

@cab(cab) : I seriously doubt the “Maestro is planning as we speak”. Right now I reckon he’s snoring in his favourite armchair, much to the wife’s annoyance – drool leaking down his chin and splattered Chicken a-la-king down his Sunday shirt.

    @cab(cab) :

I think the S15 may reveal some disappointmenting performances as some of the ‘favoured’ ones protect themselves to get to N.Z. and play with a stymied motivation which will irritate their franchises. Then too as you indicate some return from injuries with question marks, rightly or wrongly.

Only the actual play as it unfolds will reveal all.

    So come on S15.

Yes, I know him very well outside and inside(V.V.) and am disappointed to read that.

I was aware that he had some medical problem some years ago already.

Thanks for that information however bad it may seem.

Jonny was since ’94 sometime involved with the fishing industry I believe.

yes, it will be interesting to see if matfield holds down his spot if the Bulls don’t start well, burger is still robust as all hell tho he took a big hit from groot willem alberts last year. Similarly be inretsting to see how the Sharks play Smit since they currently have the Bok frontrow – bad team performances and these boys could lose ground.

Also be interesting to see how fdp and brussow come back from very long lay offs, will they be the same players or more tentative? They’ve got to do what schalk did which is to go he’ll for leather, invariably injuries are picked up when guys play tenatively or hold back.

    @cab(cab) :

But I doubt whether they will lose ground with the coaching staff and that may not sit well with some players who could lose out.

Too many semingly comfortable eggs in that basket.

Cab ek is nou uit. Sal weer later in die week met jou sekerlik praat. Totsiens.

Yeah but it’s good that PdV has kept them on, they are class players, he must however have the balls to pick them on the bench if needed, which I think he will do. So far I think he’s played it mostly all right, even the move of smit to 3 resulted. In one of our best years ever.

    @cab(cab) :

Cab, I used to be a huge PdV supporter, really wanted him to do well, but at this stage I believe he is only a puppet in the hands of John Smit and company so I do not expect any changes- the old guard will start and … well, probably lose the wc for SA- hope I am wrong but ….

    Hi Shaun,

Thanks for the info- very sad to hear about Johnny- we had a few arguments but I always respected him for his stance – a great bloke- lovely sense of humour- and yeah, he did well in the fishing Industry for a while but then it all went wrong, long story.

He is a legend though – RIP Johnny I.

    Adam is more valuable than
    Giteau
    2011-01-23 10:15:02

    The Brumbies have
    effectively told Matt Giteau
that he should pack his bags
at the end of the season.

    They regard Adam Ashley-
    Cooper as far more valuable.
This is the gist of the message
    from Brumbies boss Andrew
Fagan, who made it clear that they will be working very hard on retaining Ashley-Cooper.

The Brumbies have accepted that Giteau will move on after the World Cup, with French clubs
    Bayonne and Toulon leading the
    race for his signature.

“By the time he [Giteau] leaves,
he will have played about 100
    Tests and 100 Super rugby
    games,” Fagan told The
    Australian.

“He has played in a World Cup
final, won a Super Rugby title and achieved virtually everything
    there is to achieve.

“So like George Gregan and Steve Larkham and George Smith before him, he has reached the point
when the time is right to go.

“I’m not going to change his mind when he has reached his
    decision.”
