Pedrie propels Ulster into quarters

Pedrie Wannenburg scored two tries as Ulster confirmed their spot in the European Cup play-offs.

Wannenburg put in a Man of the Match performance in Ulster’s 43-6 win over lowly Aironi. Ruan Pienaar was a key man for the Irish club, and BJ Botha and Johan Muller continue to show their grit in the tight-five.

The South African quartet should be selected when Ulster battle Northampton in the first quarter-final in early April. The Saints have been on form, especially at the scrum where Brian Mujati has been a revelation.

Heinke van der Merwe and Richardt Strauss will be part of Leinster’s assault on a semi-final place when they meet English club Leicester. In other quarter-finals, Perpignan host Joe van Niekerk’s Toulon while Biarritz will battle Shaun Sowerby’s Toulouse.

On the sad end of the scale, Luke Watson and Butch James’s Bath bowed out of the competition with a 26-19 loss to Biarritz over the weekend. The fixture was former Springbok scrumhalf Michael Claassens’ 100th match for the club.

In the little bits I saw of the Bath Biarritz game, neither James nor Watson were particularly impressive.

@stew(stew)-6: I wasn’t sure you could say “Luke played kak” on this site. I heard they electrocuted you through your keyboard.

I’d be surprised if Botha continued to show his grit in the tight five on account of him missing the game with a dislocated elbow.

@>^..^< katman(katman)-5: Bath forwards were dominated, their tight five is pretty awful this year so their back-row and back-line is struggling to shine.

James isn’t yet in the groove post-injury, Watson too has had his injury troubles.
