SA latest – Rookie spearheads Stormers
26 Jan 2011
Keo.co.za brings you news from South Africa’s Super Rugby franchises.
Van Aswegen spearheads Stormers – Allister Coetzee has picked Gary van Aswegen at flyhalf for the Stormers’ pre-season match against the Lions.
Coetzee is yet to settle on a flyhalf to play understudy to Peter Grant in the Super Rugby competition. Van Aswegen and Elgar Watts have not played in the Stormers’ systems before, and that’s why they are preferred ahead of Lionel Cronje in this fixture. Coetzee said that Cronje is likely to battle the Sharks in the next match.
On the injury front, the bad news is that lock Anton van Zyl has dislocated his shoulder and is out for four to six weeks. He will be touch and go for the start of the competition proper.
Others who will miss the Tri-Series but are hopeful for the first official game are Jaque Fourie (foot injury) and Francois Louw (hamstring). Fourie has begun running at training, and the Stormers medical staff are monitoring Louw’s injury.
Dewald Duvenage (hamstring injury) may come into the picture for the final warm-up against Boland. CJ van der Linde has a leg injury and should he not recover before Thursday, Steven Kitschoff will start against the Lions with Wicus Blaauw joining the bench.
Stormers – 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 Gio Aplon, 13 Juan de Jongh, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Gary van Aswegen, 9 Ricky Januarie, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Rynhardt Elstadt, 6 Schalk Burger (c), 5 Andries Bekker, 4 De Kock Steenkamp, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Tiaan Liebenberg, 1 CJ van der Linde.
Subs: Siyabonga Ntubeni, Steven Kitschoff, Frans Malherbe, Wimpie van der Walt, Quinn Roux, Pieter Louw, Siya Kolisi, Nic Groom, Elgar Watts, Johann Sadie, Tim Whitehead, JJ Engelbrecht, Danie Poolman.
Bulls bucks face Kings – The Bulls have named a young side to face the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
Derick Kuün captains a side that includes a string of fringe players. Akona Ndungane makes a comeback after nearly two years sidelined with leg fractures.
Bulls – Jaco van der Westhuyzen, Akona Ndungane, Stephan Dippenaar, Stefan Watermeyer, Sampie Mastriet, Francois Brummer, Ruan Snyman, Gerrit-Jan van Velze, CJ Stander, Derick Kuün (c), Juandré Kruger, Fudge Mabeta, Werner Kruger, Henry Bantjes, Dean Greyling.
Subs: Hans van Dyk, Frik Kirsten, Cornell Hess, Tendayi Chikukwa, Okkie Kruger, Dustin Jinka, Louis Fouché, Bradley Moolman, Courtnall Skosan.
Bulls pair stuck in limbo – Chiliboy Ralepelle and Bjorn Basson will miss the Bulls’ first warm-up game against the EP Kings. The Saru judicial committee that heard their cases on Tuesday has reserved judgment, and the pair remain unavailable.
Ralepelle and Basson, who were last year suspended following positive tests for a banned stimulant, will continue to train in isolation until the verdict is announced.
Brussow to miss start of Super Rugby – Springbok flank Heinrich Brussow will only be back for the fourth round of the new competition. Brussow missed the entire 2010 Test season, and after a second operation to his injured knee, he is still rehabilitating.
The Cheetahs are also waiting on Andries Strauss, who is struggling with a groin injury and will miss the Cheetahs’ warm-up matches on Friday.
The former Sharks centre has been training on his own for the past two weeks, and the coaches don’t want to risk him at this stage. Strauss and fullback Hennie Daniller (calf) will only be available for the practice match against the EP Kings on 4 February.
Prop WP Nel is also battling a hamstring injury and may even miss the Kings clash as well as the Bloemfontein warm-ups.
The Cheetahs’ A team will face Shimlas in a contact session on Friday morning, before meeting the B team in a 20-minute game. The B team will also play a training game against the Griffons.
Lions name Tri-Series squad – John Mitchell has named a 36-man squad for the pre-season games against the Stormers and Sharks. Elton Jantjies and Doppies la Grange have been included despite earlier reports that they will not feature due to their lack of conditioning.
Lions – Jacobie Adriaanse, Martin Bezuidenhout, Michael Bondesio, Jannie Boshoff, David Bulbring, Kevin Buys, Tonderai Chavhanga, Patrick Cilliers, Rory Kockott, David de Villiers, George Earle, Joubert Engelbrecht, Cobus Grobbelaar, JC Janse van Rensburg, Elton Jantjies, James Kamana, Michael Killian, Doppies la Grange, Bandise Maku, Lionel Mapoe, Edgar Marutlulle, Derick Minnie, Waylon Murray, Andre Pretorius, Michael Rhodes, Joshua Strauss, Wayne Swart, Jaco Taute, Franco van der Merwe, Wikus van Heerden, Deon van Rensburg, Dries van Schalkwyk, Jano Vermaak, Warren Whiteley, Ross Geldenhuys and Burton Francis.
Duncan to lead Kings – Rory Duncan will captain the EP Kings in Saturday’s game against the Bulls.
Regular skipper Mzwandile Stick is still unavailable due to a knee injury, and so vice-captain Duncan will make the step up. Tiger Mangweni will take Stick’s place at fullback.
EP Kings – 15 Tiger Mangweni, 14 Norman Nelson, 13 Siyanda Grey, 12 Matthew Tayler-Smith, 11 Paul Perez, 10 Monty Dumond, 9 Jacques Coetzee, 8 Darron Nell, 7 Mpho Mbiyozo, 6 Devin Oosthuizen, 5 Barend Pieterse, 4 Rory Duncan (c), 3 Andre Schlecter, 2 Hannes Franklin, 1 Jaco Engels.
Subs: 16 Jaco Fourie, 17 Ronnie Uys, 18 Ross Kennedy, 19 Lungelo Payi, 20 Marlon Lewis, 21 Shane Gates, 22 SP Marais, 23 Riaan Vermeulen, 24 Frank Herne

See what happens when he leaves The Sharks. His game falls to pieces and he gets crocked.

Lack of depth dragons
26 Jan 2011, 09:34 am
Bad news for Brussow fans too, he will only be back on the field in the 4th round of the S15.
26 Jan 2011, 09:40 am
@pissant: I hope that he is strong and doesn’t relapse. He is too good to lose.

The Bulls have some nice depth at lock and loose forward.
The team for this weekend’s King’s game as Gerrit Jan van Velze and CJ Stander and Derick Kuun as the loose trio, and Juandre Kruger and Flip vd Merwe (pending fitness test) as the lock pairing.
That is a formiddable group of forwards in their own right, but they can all be replaced by:
Pierre Spies
Dewald Potgieter
Deon Stegman
Victor Matfield
Bakkies Botha
with Danie Rossouw still hanging around as a replacement, to top it all off.
Certainly, from 4-8, and at 9 as well, the Bulls will have significant quality in depth.

The verdict is only delayed because the tirbunal is too lazy to get a move on writing the report on their decision.
Probably going to take them a week to find just the right words to make themselves sound intelligent, all the while pretending that they know what they’re talking about.
All they needed to release was a one page document stating their decision, the reason for the decision and that the matter was now closed.
From what I can see no one is going to challenge the outcome, even if they let the guys of scott free, so no need to write a long legal justification.
Just finish up this unnecessary matter and get back to your day jobs, guys.

Sharks new jersey unveiled.
26 Jan 2011, 10:17 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-9:
Before even looking at it let me venture a prediction that it is bound to look better than the Kings jersey.
26 Jan 2011, 10:17 am
@Tacitus(Tacitus)-10:
Haha, was my first comment on it!!!

@PissAnt(PissAnt)-11: John Smit is looking lean (if not mean) in that photo. I don’t particularly like the new Sharks jeresy.
The Kings jersey, why I quite like it. Don’t know why it’s getting so much stick. It’s very Chief-esque.
26 Jan 2011, 10:21 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-11:
John looks quite fit.
26 Jan 2011, 10:22 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-12: @WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-13:

26 Jan 2011, 10:32 am
On the jersey itself, looks a bit cheap to me.

Maevis adores Monsieur Pricee.
She also adores Barney.
Today is a twofer.
26 Jan 2011, 11:03 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-11: 11
John looks like he has lost at least 10kg in that pic. Looking great. Someone on sw said they saw him when Sharks were up in Rustenburg training. Said he looked lean and fit. My neighbour also saw him a few weeks back and said John is looking great.
26 Jan 2011, 11:06 am
@Puma(Puma)-26: don’t know how u can tell how much he’s lost from a pic, but yeah the Plod looks lean…
26 Jan 2011, 11:13 am
@Transformation(Transformation)-27: Transie,
Not sure how much weight he has lost, but it looks plenty. Remember Plum had said John had lost 8kg a few weeks back, so going on that and it must be at least 10kg now. Cause he is way, way thinner than last year.
Captain is back…..
26 Jan 2011, 11:15 am
Heinrich only fit for the 4th round. This sounds like he’s really struggling with his rehab. This is the actual big news, as many are counting on him for a big showing this year to lead us out of the fetching wilderness….
26 Jan 2011, 11:19 am
Richie McCaw: Gawd sent me to earth to show people how to play rugby…
Fourie du Preez: I sent nobody!

26 Jan 2011, 11:35 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-19: it looks better than that fugly WP blue white jersey slapped with that red and yellow yucky DHL logo.
26 Jan 2011, 11:37 am
i like the sharks jersey…..has anyone got a link to the kings and stormers jerseys>??
26 Jan 2011, 11:38 am

26 Jan 2011, 11:39 am
@grant10(grant10)-36:
Kings, check News24 archives.
Stormers, not officially released yet.
@RedLion is waiting …(RL)-35:
Says the guy who will buy a yellow and blue Ayoba supporters jersey…
26 Jan 2011, 11:41 am
@grant10(grant10)-34:
You said it Grantie.
No more talk of him as an international loose or tight head.
Now it’s hooker all the way. And if he isn’t the best hooker, well, then we have a bit of a problem, don’t we?
Personally, I think Bismark is the best hooker SA has had since readmission. He is probably the first hooker who is a geniune contender for being the no.1 in his position in the world.
None of the guys before him came close to that level.
It’s like leaving Bakkies Botha out of the team because Johan Muller is a great captain or something along those lines.
Everytime you make that selection, it becomes more difficult to justify. And more difficult to keep a straight face while trying to convince the public that your case has merit.
26 Jan 2011, 11:42 am
@Great White Shark(Predawn)-1: You do know Strauss is an old Cheetahs player, right? I assume you’re talking about him.
@pokkel(pokkel)-2: Hmmm. weird. I read in the article above ‘A team’ and ‘B team’… despite the injuries. Are you sure there’s a ‘lack of depth’?
26 Jan 2011, 11:45 am
@Tacitus(Tacitus)-39: @grant10(grant10)-34: Plum said Plod will play in ALL 3 frontrow positions and is the ONLY player in the world to do it!
26 Jan 2011, 11:46 am
Bulls team for Kings match:

@PissAnt(PissAnt)-42:
Gonna be a tight match, I reckon.
Bulls team not playing on Saturday:
Zane Kirchner
Bjorn Basson
Gerhard vd Heever
Jaco Pretorius
Wynand Olivier
Morne Steyn
Fourie du Preez
Pierre Spies
Dewald Potgieter
Deon Stegman
Victor Matfield
Bakkies Botha
Bees Roux (the only position where the first choice player is playing)
Gary Botha
Gurthro Steenkamp
Bench players that would also make the starting 15 for Saturay:
Chilliboy Rallapele
Flip vd Merwe
Danie Rossouw
Francois Hougaard
Nice outing for the B team. Worth the 50 bucks I spent on a ticket.
26 Jan 2011, 11:53 am
@Tacitus(Tacitus)-43:
Never heard of some of those names…
26 Jan 2011, 11:54 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-44:
U21 and Vodacom Cup players, mostly.
26 Jan 2011, 11:57 am
@Tacitus(Tacitus)-43: Tac you still up for drinks after the match
26 Jan 2011, 11:57 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-44:
The most important performances will be those of Francois Brummer and the two centres, as those are the areas we are the shortest of depth. Particularly Brummer. We really need him to step up, as Morne Steyn will HAVE to rest 3 or 4 games during this long tournament.
26 Jan 2011, 11:58 am

I never said I was in the first place. All you need to know is that somewhere in that sea of people on Saturday, will be the man sometimes known as Tacitus.
