Aussie latest – Mortlock to skipper Rebels

Keo.co.za brings you news from the Australian Super Rugby franchises.

Mortlock to skipper Rebels - Stirling Mortlock will captain the Melbourne Rebels in their debut Super Rugby campaign this season.

The former Brumbies centre was selected to skipper the Rebels as he is one of the most experienced players in the squad having played 123 Super Rugby games and 80 Tests, 29 of them as Wallabies captain.

Welsh flanker Gareth Delve has been named vice-captain. Both players will start their roles against the Crusaders this weekend.

Double blow for Brumbies – Brumbies duo Christian Lealiifano and Patrick Phibbs picked up injuries at training and will miss the pre-season match against the Reds on Friday.

Scrumhalf Phibbs is struggling with a dead leg but is expected to recover in time for the Brumbies’ pre-season match against the Hurricanes next Thursday.

Utility back Lealiifano has been ruled out for three weeks with a quad strain and is unlikely to feature in the Brumbies’ Super Rugby opener against the Chiefs on 19 February.
