Wits edge UWC in thriller
3 Feb 2011
Wits scored a last-minute try to beat UWC 22-19 while CUT secured a 31-12 win over Fort Hare in the second round of the Varsity Shield on Thursday.
In Johannesburg, Wits surrendered a 15-0 half-time lead as UWC scored 19 unanswered points in a strong second-half showing. However, flanker Clayton Allem denied the visitors a great comeback victory as he crossed the chalk in the final action of the match to seal the win for hosts.
Wits dominated an out-of-sorts UWC outfit before the break as wing Riaan Arends and lock Charles Baggot scored a try each and fullback Michael Sephton-Poultney kicked a conversion and penalty.
UWC turned things around in the second half as they went ahead 19-15 via three tries scored by wing Anthony Volminck, flanker Rashaad Williams and speedster Adriaan Herman. But Allem saved the hosts as he dived under the posts for the match-winning try.
In Bloemfontein, CUT scrumhalf Inus Kritzinger grabbed a brace in his team’s 31-12 win over Fort Hare.
The hosts led 10-6 at half-time as Kritzinger scored his first and flyhalf Jannie Myburgh slotted a penalty and conversion. Flyhalf Qondani Katywa kicked two penalties for Fort Hare.
The floodgates opened in the second stanza as CUT scored two more tries through Kritzinger and centre Leon Pretorius to seal the win.
