Blitzboks lucky to be in Cup play-offs
4 Feb 2011
GARETH DUNCAN reports on the Springbok Sevens’ inconsistent performances on day one at the Wellington Sevens.
The Blitzboks will have to thank Canada for their place in the Cup section. After their 31-5 win over the latter, they suffered a 14-12 loss to France in their second group match. All France had to do to confirm their Cup spot ahead of South Africa was to beat the lowly North Americans.
A French victory was expected against Canada, who also lost 38-0 against Fiji. However, Canada upset France with an 19-14 win, handing the Blitzboks a Cup play-off lifeline. South Africa followed with a draw against Fiji, confirming second place behind the Pacific Islanders in Pool D. But it was a match South Africa should have won.
Fiji were far the better team in the first stanza and rightfully took the lead after speedster Seremaia Burotu ran in the corner for the first try of the game. In reply, the Blitzboks couldn’t build any momentum on attack because of poor passing and handling while their defence was easily penetrated. South Africa were lucky to be trailing 7-0 at the break.
In the second half, the Blitzboks produced an improved performance. They camped inside Fiji’s red zone for most parts of the half but could only score one try through Branco du Preez to level matters.
Bernado Botha had the opportunity to dive over for the match-winning try, but he lost the ball forward over the line. South Africa were then awarded an injury-time penalty in a kickable position to clinch the match, but they went for the try and failed.
The Blitzboks will now face Australia in the Cup quarter-final on day two. In the other Cup play-offs, England face Argentina, Fiji play Samoa and New Zealand take on Wales.
Blitzboks results (Day 1):
South Africa 31 Canada 5
South Africa 12 France 14
South Africa 7 Fiji 7

Full time. 34-21 to the Frogs.
Something for Scotland to take away from this though. 3 tries is nosebleed time.
5 Feb 2011, 20:48 pm
The Kaaiwaais will be kakking their broeks.
5 Feb 2011, 20:49 pm
@JockBok(JockBok)-969:
Tough luck on the Scot result. They’re not going to be easy beats this time around. The Boks found that one out.
But if I had to stick my neck out, France should take the 6 Nations again this year.
5 Feb 2011, 20:52 pm
@carol(carol)-973:
Lol. It’s the one thing I dread, a result like the NZ game last year. I HATE it when Scotland get humiliated. We are such a small rugby nation and we play the game for the right reason.
Ah well, Frogs looking good.
5 Feb 2011, 20:54 pm
@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-976:
Yep, Frogs are a class above I reckon. England always give them a game and it’s usually a tough one to call regardless of form, but the French are stronger than anyone ON PAPER. Lol.
5 Feb 2011, 20:55 pm
@I am a stormer(I am a stormer)-976: Might be a bit early to call.
Like to see them play on the muddy isle first.
5 Feb 2011, 21:00 pm
@JockBok(JockBok)-977: But look, you beat the Boks last year….!!
Enjoy the Rose wine, catch you again soon!
5 Feb 2011, 21:02 pm
See you boys…have a great evening whatever you are doing and wherever you are.
5 Feb 2011, 21:03 pm
@carol(carol)-980:
Yep, cheers for now.
5 Feb 2011, 21:14 pm
Scotland v Wales in Edinburgh is a huge game now. And dare I say it, but are Scotland favourites????
5 Feb 2011, 21:22 pm
@JockBok(JockBok)-983: Against this weeks Wales in the Capital. Sure Jocks must be favorites.
5 Feb 2011, 21:33 pm
@JockBok(JockBok)-950: What happened to Scotlands scrum?
5 Feb 2011, 21:38 pm
@JL1(JL1)-985:
Wow, monstered hey? I’m so taken aback by it I don;t know what to say. But I had to laugh when the commentator said that Euan Murray was probably wishing it was a Sunday.
Still, good news is it got ‘better’ towards as the game went on. Couldn’t have got any worse mind you.
5 Feb 2011, 23:42 pm

@Great White Shark(Predawn)-975: gees mate, a little thought goes a long way…
the kaiwaiiis have organised it so if we lose to france this time around it wont knock us out of the tourny… thats why they happened to end up in our pool group.. we planned it that way
please try thinking, it is so important..
