Aus latest – Another Wallaby committed

Keo.co.za brings you news from Australia’s Super Rugby franchises.

Another Wallaby committed – Berrick Barnes becomes the fifth Wallaby to sign a two-year contract extension with the ARU this week.

With the fear of a player exodus in the southern hemisphere after the World Cup, the ARU has been negotiating contract extensions with several players. Flyhalf Barnes is the latest player to commit until 2013 while hooker Stephen Moore, utility back Adam Ashley-Cooper, wing Drew Mitchell and prop Ben Alexander signed their extended deals earlier this week.

More Wallabies are expected to agree extended contracts with the ARU and their respective franchises over the next couple of weeks, except utility back Matt Giteau, who has been linked with a move to France next season.

I thought this was going to be a news article about Aussie rugby players being placed in an asylum.

@grant10(grant10)-2: Not really…the ARU have really left all this to the last minute and have been frantically renewing contracts only because a lot of their stars were on the verge of heading overseas with the ARU trying to play it cool. The ARU still have the old school amateur mentality that you should be playing for the wallabies for 5 bob and lunchmoney, and nobody deserves to have negotiations to up their salary. This attitude is what constantly keeps sharks swimming around their waters (rugby league and overseas clubs) and their players signing really short contracts

@flanka(flanka)-4: Nobody in rugby league gets anywhere near the top rugby dollars. Their attempt to buy Quade Cooper was all bluff, no club has that sort of money.

True about the negotiations though. Problem is the players are just as bad, of the mentality that they should be paid top dollar regardless of how they’ve actually performed. See Giteau, Tuqiri for reference. Hopefully Quade not about to join that group with the entitlement complex.

They’re gonna need Barnes when Giteau (and possibly Cooper) walk
