SA latest – Smit back at tighthead
9 Mar 2011
Keo.co.za brings you news from South Africa’s Super Rugby franchises.
Smit back at tighthead -John Smit will start his first Super Rugby game this season at tighthead prop when the Sharks take on the Rebels in Melbourne on Friday.
Smit replaces Jannie du Plessis in the front row and takes over the captaincy from outside centre Stefan Terblanche.
The other change to the pack sees No 8 Ryan Kankowski promoted from the bench, which sees Keegan Daniel move to openside flank and Jacques Botes drops to the reserves.
Wing Odwa Ndungane has recovered from his light concussion to make the run-on side this weekend, while speedster Lwazi Mvovo replaces the injured JP Pietersen.
Sharks – 15 Louis Ludik, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Stefan Terblanche, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Patrick Lambie, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Keegan Daniel, 5 Alistair Hargreaves, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 John Smit (c), 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Bench: 16 Craig Burden, 17 Jannie du Plessis, 18 Anton Bresler, 19 Jacques Botes, 20 Conrad Hoffmann, 21 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 22 Adrian Jacobs.
Sharks consider London fixture – The Crusaders are planning to stage their home match against the Sharks in London, but they will need the Durban franchise to agree to the change in venue.
Following the earthquake in Christchurch, the Crusaders have moved to Nelson as a temporary base. Since the disaster, there has been a move to stage a game in London in order to help their financial situation.
According to The Witness, Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl has been approached by his Crusaders counterpart and the Durban franchise is weighing up the pros and cons. The fixture is the Sharks’ fourth and final
tour game before they return to South Africa, so to travel all the way to London would place them at a disadvantage.
Both the Crusaders and Sharks stand to make money from the proposed fixture at Twickenham, but Van Zyl said a ‘rugby decision’ rather than a financial one would be made. The decision will be announced following the Sharks’ game against the Rebels on Friday.
Brussow back in action – Heinrich Brussow will make his return to Super Rugby against the Lions this weekend.
Sias Ebersohn will start at flyhalf while Andries Strauss has been named captain for the Cheetahs’ clash with the Lions. Naas Olivier has been dropped to the bench after some poor performances in the first three rounds.
Coach Naka Drotske has made several other changes, with Riaan Viljoen slotting in at fullback, flanks Philip van der Walt and Brussow introduced to the back row and Martin Muller coming in at lock.
Cheetahs – 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Philip Snyman, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Andries Strauss (c), 11 Rayno Benjamin, 10 Sias Ebersohn, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Ashley Johnson, 7 Philip van der Walt, 6 Heinrich Brussow, 5 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 4 Martin Muller, 3 WP Nel, 2 Ryno Barnes, 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Subs: 16 Skipper Badenhorst, 17 Kobus Calldo, 18 Kabamba Floors, 19 Francois Uys, 20 Tewis de Bruyn, 21 Naas Olivier, 22 Fabien Juries.

about time naka
9 Mar 2011, 09:42 am
kaka is useless, he is into his 4th season as super rugby and currie cup coach and his team is the second worst super team ever …. hell kaka what is your excuse?
9 Mar 2011, 09:43 am
Yep cos Sias is getting offers from the force. Like to see if he is as really as good as he thinks he is.
Man that Naas is inconsistant.
9 Mar 2011, 09:59 am
I would say Riaan Viljoen is the best fullback in the country at the moment, followed closely by Aplon
9 Mar 2011, 10:04 am
I’d also make a plan to move if Naas was rate over me.
9 Mar 2011, 10:09 am
@Bok fan(Bok fan)-4: I guess you haven’t you seen Ludik and Taute this year?
9 Mar 2011, 10:14 am
JC I am not so sure Naas has had a horrid run so far.
How do you explain his selection of captain last week then? Surely that suggests that Naka rated him and his play up and till that point?
Also, in the Stormers match, he kicked all the Cheetahs points apart from one kick.
The selection of Sias has more it than meets the eye.
9 Mar 2011, 10:28 am
@PissAnt
I agree with you. Remember how Robert didn’t want to move (I think it was the Sharks that wanted him) unless his boetie came with. Robert is probably threatening to bugger off if his brother doesn’t get played. Must suck to be such a clutz that your brother has to drag you along in life.

Trying to make sense of a coach that can’t think outside of his prejudice is never going to be easy. This is a coach that still counts the number of black players in his team to see if he is meeting some sort of AA criterior. This is a coach that is still trying to sell white supremacy by clearly demonstrating to the world how inadequate he is. This irony is a reflection of the current state of Afrikanerdom.
TIME TO EVOLVE NAKA!!.. and give Earle Rose a call.. YOu need him more than he needs you
9 Mar 2011, 10:46 am
@JoeK(JoeK)-8:
I mentioned yesterday, the word on the grapevine is that the Force, who has lost 3 flyhalfs to injury are scouting for back-up big time.
They apparently targeted two South Africans, Sias being one, Lionel Cronje being the other – both age-group stars, both (up till now) ignored by their franchises…
9 Mar 2011, 10:47 am
Obvious difference here, Naka and the Cheetahs does not want to lose Sias, Stormers cannot wait to get rid of Lionel…
9 Mar 2011, 10:49 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-11: are you being serious with that statement PA?
9 Mar 2011, 10:50 am
This team selection of Naka is an absolute disgrace.They should re-brand this team the Klu Klux Klan Cheetahs.
9 Mar 2011, 10:50 am
@grant10(grant10)-12: It certainly seems that way given their handling of him….
9 Mar 2011, 10:51 am
@grant10(grant10)-12:
He is quite simply not rated Grant.
9 Mar 2011, 10:52 am
Finally. Naka is just soooooo bad. How long has it taken him to start with Kabamba?
9 Mar 2011, 10:53 am
And if the noises that have been made regarding him, it has little to do with his ability or skill. But please, that is just speculation but speculation which serves as the best explanation at this stage.
9 Mar 2011, 10:54 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-11: Maybe you also cant think outside of your prejudice.. you mention players that are a league or two below Earle Rose. The Force could also have Earle also but because of the Rupert influence in that neck of the woods, they would rather lose. The Loffie syndrome??
9 Mar 2011, 10:55 am
@Ratel Brussow(Morne Steyn is under-rated)-16: Wait, hang on, he’s dropped him???? WTF.
9 Mar 2011, 10:57 am
How can Kabamba not make that starting lineup? I mean its pathetic.
9 Mar 2011, 10:57 am
@youknowwho(youknowwho)-18:
I missed the part where I compared players.
9 Mar 2011, 10:57 am
@youknowwho(youknowwho)-18:
nobody wants earl.
not even in france or japan.
he is hondkak.
give yourself a poesklaap.
9 Mar 2011, 10:57 am
Lions to win this one.
9 Mar 2011, 10:58 am
@Hop Hop Spinnekop(Hop Hop Spinnekop)-6: True havent watched much, based on last year. Taute and Ludik are playing great rugby from the little I have seen.
Just rate Viljeon with his big boat and general play
9 Mar 2011, 11:00 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-17: Was it because of a recent incident, or the situation deteriorating since last years dust-up in the pub?
9 Mar 2011, 11:01 am
@youknowwho(youknowwho)-18: Yip. Earl’s the answer. You got it Shaunie.
You and Charlie Sheen would get along famously. I think you inhabit a similar reality.
9 Mar 2011, 11:02 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-21: You miss a lot pissant.. its an old trick..Selective ignorance. You make as if you are not aware that Earle Rose was shown the door by Naka… did you question this. He also has Morgan Newman in his squad who has covered at Flyhalf.
9 Mar 2011, 11:03 am
@Frankly speaking(Frankly speaking)-25:
Honestly I have no idea.
When I recently asked to someone in confidence about why the Stormers/WP management has not been truthful wrt the Cronje saga, I was asked ‘how do you tell guys in a media conference you don’t rate a player’?
Everything indicating that Cronje will quietly play out his contract at WP in the Vodacom Cup team unless he is bought out sooner.
9 Mar 2011, 11:07 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-26:
except that charlie is a winner who drinks tigersblood.
and langers is a loser who drinks whatever is left unattended on the bar counter.
9 Mar 2011, 11:08 am
@The X-factor is staying at home.(gunther)-22: The World of rugby revolves around media exposure… It was supposed to sell white supremacy. Players get selected based on media exposure because white coaches are too fickle to move beyond what they see as media prefence.. Typical twat mentality which you seem to display at most times..
BTW.. Dollie seems to be doing fine in Japan.. but SA media which is still controlled by white twats cannot bring themselves to discuss this.
9 Mar 2011, 11:10 am
@youknowwho(youknowwho)-27:
Not really, when I spoke to Earl personally last year regarding an incident (not related to the Cheetahs at all) where he gave me an on-the-record account of events claiming his dignity and morals was being unfairly attacked or questioned.
Only for this guy to turn around, stab people in the back who put their reputation on the line to save his career, I got a very clear and first-hand account of Earl Rose the player, and the person and how he conducts himself in a personal capacity, and that of a rugby player.
At that point I realised questioning anything regarding Rose is useless, so I stopped.
With regards to Newman, he was given away by WP rugby.
9 Mar 2011, 11:10 am
@youknowwho(youknowwho)-30: of course he would do fione in japan , its like school rugby strength
and him being a midget would fit right in with the *** midgets
and now go crawl back into that hole you crawled out of you racist pig , go join the likes of hondo and capo
9 Mar 2011, 11:11 am
fione = fine
9 Mar 2011, 11:11 am
@youknowwho(youknowwho)-30:
PS, Dollie is back in SA, has been for a while now too…
9 Mar 2011, 11:11 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-26: I dont expect you to understand what I am talking about… like I said to Pissant.. a case of selective ignorance. It seems to be contagious among certain social groups on this blog… A cultural thing??
9 Mar 2011, 11:11 am
It seems you miss quite a lot.
9 Mar 2011, 11:12 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-31: pity about Newman as he seemed a good prospect
9 Mar 2011, 11:13 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-34: he only here to start his racial tirades mate
9 Mar 2011, 11:13 am
and good morning Morne
9 Mar 2011, 11:13 am
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-38:
Oh well okay, I will move on and ignore then.
9 Mar 2011, 11:14 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-31: Morgan was given away by Rassie… A typical example of Afrikaner inadequacy. Rassie is useless to the core but still calls the shots at WP. I bet he still earns more than AC… this demonstrates the imbecilic nature of SA rugby
9 Mar 2011, 11:15 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-40: best way mate
newman should have gone sharks way , he was looking good when he burst onto the scene
9 Mar 2011, 11:16 am
@youknowwho(youknowwho)-30:
the rugby media world is controlled by white supremacists?
has anybody told the ozzies and kiwis that?
by the way why did your nephew morgan move to the cheetahs?
does he enjoy being around white supremacists?
or was he desperate?
9 Mar 2011, 11:16 am
@youknowwho(youknowwho)-41:
He is Director of Rugby, so of course he calls the shots, its his job. he also gave away Conrad Hoffman, and loads of other players. But like I said, time to move on.
9 Mar 2011, 11:17 am
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-32: You are too stupid to understand what I am talking about… I blame apartheid. That false sense of superiority is the embodiment of Twatism
9 Mar 2011, 11:18 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-28: Well they must know more than we do. If he impressed in the Vodacom Cup/U/21 matches, he duly would’ve got a start during the CC (like JJ, Gary, and the newbies in this years S15)
It sounds a lot like what happened with Conrad Hoffman too
I wish they would apply that policy to Ricky, although I doubt there’ll be any takers…
9 Mar 2011, 11:20 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-44: onle games like pogo and yahoo have a mute/ignore system
wish Keo would setup this in here , would be easy then , you would not see the ones that are here not for rugby but for their own sick trashy views
9 Mar 2011, 11:21 am
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-42:
Morning, sorry moving on from this thread, lost my interest due to the direction of the discussion.
9 Mar 2011, 11:21 am
