SA latest – Smit back at tighthead
9 Mar 2011
Keo.co.za brings you news from South Africa’s Super Rugby franchises.
Smit back at tighthead -John Smit will start his first Super Rugby game this season at tighthead prop when the Sharks take on the Rebels in Melbourne on Friday.
Smit replaces Jannie du Plessis in the front row and takes over the captaincy from outside centre Stefan Terblanche.
The other change to the pack sees No 8 Ryan Kankowski promoted from the bench, which sees Keegan Daniel move to openside flank and Jacques Botes drops to the reserves.
Wing Odwa Ndungane has recovered from his light concussion to make the run-on side this weekend, while speedster Lwazi Mvovo replaces the injured JP Pietersen.
Sharks – 15 Louis Ludik, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Stefan Terblanche, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Patrick Lambie, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Keegan Daniel, 5 Alistair Hargreaves, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 John Smit (c), 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Bench: 16 Craig Burden, 17 Jannie du Plessis, 18 Anton Bresler, 19 Jacques Botes, 20 Conrad Hoffmann, 21 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 22 Adrian Jacobs.
Sharks consider London fixture – The Crusaders are planning to stage their home match against the Sharks in London, but they will need the Durban franchise to agree to the change in venue.
Following the earthquake in Christchurch, the Crusaders have moved to Nelson as a temporary base. Since the disaster, there has been a move to stage a game in London in order to help their financial situation.
According to The Witness, Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl has been approached by his Crusaders counterpart and the Durban franchise is weighing up the pros and cons. The fixture is the Sharks’ fourth and final
tour game before they return to South Africa, so to travel all the way to London would place them at a disadvantage.
Both the Crusaders and Sharks stand to make money from the proposed fixture at Twickenham, but Van Zyl said a ‘rugby decision’ rather than a financial one would be made. The decision will be announced following the Sharks’ game against the Rebels on Friday.
Brussow back in action – Heinrich Brussow will make his return to Super Rugby against the Lions this weekend.
Sias Ebersohn will start at flyhalf while Andries Strauss has been named captain for the Cheetahs’ clash with the Lions. Naas Olivier has been dropped to the bench after some poor performances in the first three rounds.
Coach Naka Drotske has made several other changes, with Riaan Viljoen slotting in at fullback, flanks Philip van der Walt and Brussow introduced to the back row and Martin Muller coming in at lock.
Cheetahs – 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Philip Snyman, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Andries Strauss (c), 11 Rayno Benjamin, 10 Sias Ebersohn, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Ashley Johnson, 7 Philip van der Walt, 6 Heinrich Brussow, 5 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 4 Martin Muller, 3 WP Nel, 2 Ryno Barnes, 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Subs: 16 Skipper Badenhorst, 17 Kobus Calldo, 18 Kabamba Floors, 19 Francois Uys, 20 Tewis de Bruyn, 21 Naas Olivier, 22 Fabien Juries.

@grant10(grant10)-346:
excuse me where did i denigrate anyone? that is you who has decided my flippant remark indicative of a certain type of protester, it had absolutely nothing to do with Biko. The problem here is that you feel that i been undermining your scrumming authority by talking of the tub and ducky, but its true, you know f-all. what must i pretend otherwise?

9 Mar 2011, 20:40 pm
Howzit SL, Puma.
Looks like the world is all pear shaped except for Sharkie supporters.
Revolution spreads from the Middle East to Keo… Except with the mighty Sharks supporters – all cosy and content
9 Mar 2011, 20:40 pm

@cab(cab)-353: No problems Cabbie.
But he has twisted everything you said. We can all read and he is making out you said something quite different, which you never.
But will leave it. Sorry to jump in, but had too. The guy has turned what you said into something which is not true.
9 Mar 2011, 20:44 pm

I am not ganging up. I am just having a dig at G10 + Mini-me + ET for a change with the revolutionary talk. Thats all.
Thought I would just add some ingredients to the fire
Might as well have a dig at everyone…except for Shark supporters, that is. We all good okes
9 Mar 2011, 20:45 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-354: Howzit brudda. Well and you mate?
Jeepers, hope we don’t have to play our Saders game in London. Did you read it might take place there? HG will enjoy that though…hahaha.
I doubt it will go there. Too much money on changing flights and far too much travel.
9 Mar 2011, 20:45 pm
GO SMITTY!!!! LIVING LEGEND!!!! ONE OF THE GREATEST PLAYERS TO GRACE THE GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
9 Mar 2011, 20:46 pm
Judy = Cab.
I regularly tune in to watch the bickering Punch (skopsnot) and Judy (Cab) philosophy and meaning of life show.
Good value.
The two make a good couple.
9 Mar 2011, 20:46 pm
It beggars belief that they continue to play games involving SA teams on a Friday night down under.
Friday night in Oz and NZ = Friday morning in SA = lower viewing figures.
It’s not rocket science and the name of the game is higher viewing figures.

@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-360: Howzit HG.

9 Mar 2011, 20:55 pm
wow sharks and crusaders in London – what a great game that would be. I hope the Sharks take them up on it.
It’s a neutral playing field too, good opportunity for the Sharks to knock over the Crusaders in an “away” game.
9 Mar 2011, 20:56 pm
@Puma(Puma)-376:
It’s always driven me nuts Puma. Friday morning, every buggger is working. I don’t mind getting up at 6 in the morning on a Saturday to watch the mighty Stormers, but Friday makes no sense.
These SANZAR types sell their and our souls to television, and they can’t work out something as simple as that????
Anyway folks, would love to hang about and teach you circling sharkies a few home truths but I’ve got a company piiss up, errr dinner just now so catch you all laters.
Peace out.
9 Mar 2011, 20:58 pm
@THE MAULER(THE MAULER)-381: Well we need you posting more…lol. It also gets to me these Smit haters. Always wonder how much in life they have ever achieved to give them the right to run down a great person like our captain. Makes the mind boggle actually.

9 Mar 2011, 20:58 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-384: hiyas spooner , i actually think we should not play them in england
1 we will have been there 3 weeks and well and truely over the jet lag
2 nelson for them is as good as a neutral ground , they never play there
9 Mar 2011, 21:00 pm
@JockBok(JockBok)-385: I just never work on a Friday….hahahah. All sorted…hehehe. Though I had to last Friday a bit and LAST Saturday. But have everything up to date this week. Friday morning no work. Just watching the rugby.
Enjoy your dinner mate.
9 Mar 2011, 21:02 pm
Cheers JB
Am going too.
9 Mar 2011, 21:02 pm
@Puma(Puma)-386:
If Smit was playing for their respective provinces you can bet your last dollar they would be singing a different tune!!!
9 Mar 2011, 21:03 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-388: I forgot to mention the real reason… I’d go and watch it
But alas, the RFU has said no… apparently citing logistical problems in organising a match for 26/03… sounds bollocks to me.
9 Mar 2011, 21:04 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-384: Spooner it would be great for the Shark and Saders supporters, but really it would not be great for our players. The travel is horendous from NZ. We also have to play Stormers the very next week. Not a great idea. We will be settled in NZ after next week. Rather our team play Saders in Nelson. Even if we have to lose, at least we won’t have to travel to London 24 hours then another 11 hour flight back to SA.
Also can’t see them doing it. Have to play one way air fair to London from NZ then one way air fair to SA. That would cost a bomb. Will be very expensive for so many players.
9 Mar 2011, 21:04 pm
I see the English RFU has turned down the Crusaders proposal of playing at Twickers…………
9 Mar 2011, 21:05 pm
ps the Crusaders had good support in Nelson (granted the capacity is only 12,000) and they looked right at “home” against the (then) table topping Waratahs.
9 Mar 2011, 21:05 pm
@Puma(Puma)-393: last paragraph. typo – Have to play = Have to pay.
9 Mar 2011, 21:07 pm
@Puma(Puma)-393: let them rather go play the game in perth
9 Mar 2011, 21:07 pm
@THE MAULER(THE MAULER)-394: Good. Don’t think it was a good idea at all.
Maybe next year something like that can be organised. Not on the drop of hat. Would have been too exhausting for Sharks players. Also Saders.
9 Mar 2011, 21:08 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-397: That would be just fine…hehehe. Jeepers we had plenty Shark supporters there hey? Kinda enjoyed all the support we had there.
9 Mar 2011, 21:09 pm
You Sharks are a real hypocritical bunch, if Smit was a Stormers player each and every one of you would be bitching and calling for his head, I know it, you know it !!!
Just because he is a Shark he is above criticism ????? Smit has been below average for 2 years now, his contribution to last year’s 3N was diabolical, and cost us big time.
You can deny it all you want , just because he lifted the WC,( thanks to many great players around him) does not mean that he cannot be criticised , he has been in poor form.
I say again if he played for Province each and every one of you would be ridiculing him, blady hypocritical bunch !!!!!
