SA latest – Smit back at tighthead
9 Mar 2011
Keo.co.za brings you news from South Africa’s Super Rugby franchises.
Smit back at tighthead -John Smit will start his first Super Rugby game this season at tighthead prop when the Sharks take on the Rebels in Melbourne on Friday.
Smit replaces Jannie du Plessis in the front row and takes over the captaincy from outside centre Stefan Terblanche.
The other change to the pack sees No 8 Ryan Kankowski promoted from the bench, which sees Keegan Daniel move to openside flank and Jacques Botes drops to the reserves.
Wing Odwa Ndungane has recovered from his light concussion to make the run-on side this weekend, while speedster Lwazi Mvovo replaces the injured JP Pietersen.
Sharks – 15 Louis Ludik, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Stefan Terblanche, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Patrick Lambie, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Keegan Daniel, 5 Alistair Hargreaves, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 John Smit (c), 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Bench: 16 Craig Burden, 17 Jannie du Plessis, 18 Anton Bresler, 19 Jacques Botes, 20 Conrad Hoffmann, 21 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 22 Adrian Jacobs.
Sharks consider London fixture – The Crusaders are planning to stage their home match against the Sharks in London, but they will need the Durban franchise to agree to the change in venue.
Following the earthquake in Christchurch, the Crusaders have moved to Nelson as a temporary base. Since the disaster, there has been a move to stage a game in London in order to help their financial situation.
According to The Witness, Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl has been approached by his Crusaders counterpart and the Durban franchise is weighing up the pros and cons. The fixture is the Sharks’ fourth and final
tour game before they return to South Africa, so to travel all the way to London would place them at a disadvantage.
Both the Crusaders and Sharks stand to make money from the proposed fixture at Twickenham, but Van Zyl said a ‘rugby decision’ rather than a financial one would be made. The decision will be announced following the Sharks’ game against the Rebels on Friday.
Brussow back in action – Heinrich Brussow will make his return to Super Rugby against the Lions this weekend.
Sias Ebersohn will start at flyhalf while Andries Strauss has been named captain for the Cheetahs’ clash with the Lions. Naas Olivier has been dropped to the bench after some poor performances in the first three rounds.
Coach Naka Drotske has made several other changes, with Riaan Viljoen slotting in at fullback, flanks Philip van der Walt and Brussow introduced to the back row and Martin Muller coming in at lock.
Cheetahs – 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Philip Snyman, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Andries Strauss (c), 11 Rayno Benjamin, 10 Sias Ebersohn, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Ashley Johnson, 7 Philip van der Walt, 6 Heinrich Brussow, 5 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 4 Martin Muller, 3 WP Nel, 2 Ryno Barnes, 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Subs: 16 Skipper Badenhorst, 17 Kobus Calldo, 18 Kabamba Floors, 19 Francois Uys, 20 Tewis de Bruyn, 21 Naas Olivier, 22 Fabien Juries.

9 Mar 2011, 21:10 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-401: Yes, it is on our way back. Perth is only a 9 hour flight going east, but coming west it is 11 hours against the head winds. Still fine. We heading in the right direction..haha. Back to Durbs.

@THE MAULER(THE MAULER)-391: For sure they would.
9 Mar 2011, 21:13 pm

9 Mar 2011, 21:16 pm
infact JR the reason those insulting smit day in and day out has nothing to do with rugby and you and i both know it ,
I am not saying you are one of those in that view , but the most are
it is pure and simple re his statement in his book where he said what players were saying and thinking about watson
and infact nowhere did john smit himself say watson is the cancer
but then again one cant help those that only want to read what they feel like reading
so again JR no in my eyes smitty is a class player , that had bad form , but he will be back with a bang
9 Mar 2011, 21:18 pm
@THE MAULER(THE MAULER)-407:
read my post , great minds think alike
9 Mar 2011, 21:19 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-406: Yes, just terrible to read the insults to a Great Captain Smit is. Really ashamed of those saffas.
@justrugby(justrugby)-400: Criticism is one thing. But insulting a person like you mate Grant does over and over is plain disgusting. There is a difference to have a opinion about a player and just leave it. We all get the message, but below the belt insulting (the person) and not the player is disgusting. I think you know that JR.
9 Mar 2011, 21:21 pm
@Puma(Puma)-410: their conduct is extremely childish.
9 Mar 2011, 21:21 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-409:
Ha ha… I just did… And very true!!! Remember 2006? Everyone and their Grandma wanted him out… and In 2007? Speaks for itself….

9 Mar 2011, 21:22 pm
Now wait for Capo or MTN Red Lion to enter from stage left with “arrogant guppies”…
Gwantie, Just Rugby, Transportation and Bossy Rossi with their snide “Plod” chorus from stage right…
9 Mar 2011, 21:22 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-411: Agree Spooner.

Cheers HG, if you looking in..hehe.
9 Mar 2011, 21:25 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-404:
SL, you at leat respond in a mature manner, the “denial” and beyond reproach status iro Smit that Sharks supporters front on this blog is hugely frustrating.
I have said from a Sharks perspective that they can do what they want with JS, but when it comes to the Boks I have a vested interest and want the best possible side to play for the Boks and if this excludes JS I have the right to that opinion.
A lot of name calling is done in banter , but the Sharkies here become overly sensitive when it’s JS, but legends like JDEV, Habs , Schalk etc can be ridiculed at will be the likes of HG , as i said hypocritical !!
cheers !!
9 Mar 2011, 21:25 pm
@Puma(Puma)-417: good night brudda , talk 2morrow ^5
9 Mar 2011, 21:26 pm

Smit led Sharks to a 5 losses in a row and a mid table S14 finish last year from TH
He then subsequently led Boks to a 5 from 6 TriN defeats
Now they trying to recreate the same scenario all over again.
This all started the year before where he led Boks to a 2 from 2 int. losses vs France and Ireland with a little help from his play to our dumbfck archaic traditional up and under strengths FdP and M. Steyn, which they still haven’t eradicated out their system yet.
Now we got all the Sharky happy clappers here telling everyone the man is LEGENDARY, therefore he gonna walk on water once again.
What you gonna do if he sinks beneath the waves of his own hyper self infatuation, just like the 5/6 triN losses in 010, wtf you actually gonna do then?
As Sharks leadership goes, Terblanche is streaks ahead of happy clappy look at me ma I’m only bleeding SA blue eyed wonder boy, he goes about his professional business without so much as a look at me blush or blink, unlike Captain Marvelous or his 2IC Lady Victoria, and the other 2 prima donnas in tow, FDP and Schalkie the Hulkie.
Sharks are playing russian roulette here switching captains and switching tight heads, they reckon Rebels is a safe enough bet to gamble this on, you better hope to God that Plum and Smitty boy is right.
9 Mar 2011, 21:30 pm
@justrugby(justrugby)-420: JR agreed we are all allowed to voice our opinions ,
you will never find me trashing players , not even januray or rose , even though i feel they are not upto standard
not over sensitive ?? banter is one thing mate , daily insults to someone that has done so much to Bok rugby?>???
when you guys have insulted Smitty for example who have i attacked back ??? province players ??? or the insulters on this blog??
january for example is not to blame for example grants immature rants on here
infact i have no doubt if januray saw what grant said about smitty ?? he himself would tell grant where to get off??
anyhows good night

9 Mar 2011, 21:31 pm
I thought it was stated in Black and in White not in one book but in both of them that Luke Watson was the absolute cancer that infiltrated the Boks camp and they all and sundry despised him to hell.
How come suddenly we changing the ancient tune? Since Jake shook hands at Hillsong, was that when the tune was changed?
9 Mar 2011, 21:33 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-425:
Show that to skop…. Didnt Smit also lead the Sharks to the top of the Super14 in 2007 only to lose the last minute when he was OFF the field… hmmmmm
9 Mar 2011, 21:34 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-426: thanks mate

otherwise he’d be here lapping up the adulation from his lackeys
9 Mar 2011, 21:43 pm
Smit LOST the S14 in 07
my recent recollection of Smitty is a flat out belly flop with twinkle toes Nonu prancing right over him to entrench his legendary status on his 100th mammoth stupendous glorious Bok appearance, Nonu and his AB buddies stole his thunder from right over his flattened butt.
Smit shouldn’t have been on the field, and it might very well not have happened, but then again I reckon its due to Smit and his JW entrenched up and under ‘we play to our delinquent archaic strengths’ strategy that we gone backwards at a rate of knots since we fluked the Bil’s due to favorable laws and refs that accompanied such ‘playing to archaic strengths’ enhanced.
2010 and it all turned around pretty dramatically, and that is the most recent recollection I have. From Eoyt 2009 we lost to France, Ireland, and then to continue the rot into 2010, NZ, Aus, NZ, Aus, and NZ again. All under the legendary immaculate leadership of his royal highness Johnny Boy Smitty Blue Eyes.
9 Mar 2011, 21:46 pm
who raised the RWC 2007 trophy?
9 Mar 2011, 21:47 pm
thats right JB smittertjie, with a twinkly smile and a powerful marauder in the tightloose.
9 Mar 2011, 21:47 pm
@cab(cab)-436:
22 warriors !!
9 Mar 2011, 21:48 pm
atleast if the Sharks do show the balls to turn up in London they will experience what not many South Africans get to in that World Capital city….

9 Mar 2011, 21:48 pm
yep, captained by warrior smittertjie.
9 Mar 2011, 21:49 pm
LEGEND
9 Mar 2011, 21:49 pm
Spurs/AC Milan looking like a nice open game !!
Cheers all
9 Mar 2011, 21:50 pm
Lemme tell you what is astounding immaturity, stupefied blind idiotic hero worship is as immature as those that gang up on so called villains.
There is absolutely nothing mature about hero worshiping somebody beyond his hero status, but if thats what you call maturity, then go ahead hero worship them till they can’t hold up your hyped up hero worshiping expectations no more, you not doing yourself nor them no hero worshiping favors whatsoever one little bit.
9 Mar 2011, 21:50 pm
are we talking about the same john smit who snubbed the post-match interview on his 100th appearance for the sharks last year after his team got beaten by the cheetahs? Where was the class that evening?
All his adoring sharks cheerleaders were waiting to hear from him in the stands but the ‘aura’ petulantly stormed into the changeroom never to come out leaving the dry-mouthed in the sweltering humidity
9 Mar 2011, 21:52 pm
who raised the WC 2007 trophy, fck me splintertjie, who the fck you beat, Argy bargy and 7th rate Engeland? This RWC hail Mary garbage just gotta come to an end, if thats how you rate hero’s from villains then you blinder and thicker than I actually thought you were.
9 Mar 2011, 21:53 pm
@cab(cab)-440:
Not just by him, yes he speaks to the refs, and press etc,
Who do you think captains the backs when Smit has his head in scrums or is at the bottom of a ruck ??, who organises defences ?? who captains the lineout s etc??
Many captains in that side !!!
9 Mar 2011, 21:53 pm
@too 2rue(too 2rue)-439: Hi mate, I was at Twickenham for the Boks game in November last year! Brilliant game. And sold out crowd too, not a spare seat in the house. Fantastic atmosphere.
@skopiskoobidoo(ilanjo)-443: let it go Skop, frothing over Smit will only give you a hernia.
9 Mar 2011, 21:53 pm
seems to me everyone gots their own heros and favourites, and in fact, its often those who really into hero worship who the first ones to cut other ppl’s heros asunder.
9 Mar 2011, 21:54 pm
@skopiskoobidoo(ilanjo)-445:
i’m a lot thicker than you thought i was, but nevertheless who raised the trophy ou baas?
@justrugby(justrugby)-446:
totally agree with you, team effort, great effort by all.
9 Mar 2011, 21:55 pm
@justrugby(justrugby)-446: so you’re quick to attribute the losses to Smit alone but very quick too attribute the wins to the “many captains in the side”?
GTFOH.
