Aussie latest – Brumbies recruit Toulon No 8

Keo.co.za brings you news from Australia’s Super Rugby franchises.

Brumbies recruit Toulon No 8 – The Brumbies have signed Toulon No 8 Fotunuupule Auelua on a two-year deal.

The Brumbies have decided to bolster their loose forward ranks with Auelua, with the ARU paying a part of his salary too as he is available to play for the Wallabies.

‘It was a difficult decision to make because I feel really good at Toulon but I didn’t want to look back on my career later on with regrets. It’s a big challenge for me and a great opportunity,’ said Auelua. ‘There’s nothing to say I will play for the Wallabies but in any case, in France I’ve got no chance of being called up.’

The 28-year-old spent four years at French club Toulon, but will now have his second stint in Australia as he played for West Harbour in the Shute Shield from 2003 to 2005.

    I would love to see players like Shaun Sowerby, Marius Joubert, Bradley Barritt, Michael Claasens, Daan Human, B.J. Botha, Derrick Hougaard, Schalk Britzs etc. return and end their careers here in South Africa :)

    @Hondo(Hondo)-3:

    I recall Fotu playing junior rugby in Sydney (Southern Districts) for Canterbury. # 8 is well within his scope. ;)

    @shaunswindon(shaunswindon)-4: The problem is there aren’t enough places for them – who would Sowerby, for example replace in the Super 15 squads (apart from Pierre Spies)? Talent is cheap in South Africa and rarely nutured as it should be, or appreciated.

    It would be good if the other Currie Cup teams in South Africa could become competitive, and perhaps welcome back some of the more experienced players. Then you could have a genuine selection of Super 15 squads. Imagine BJ Botha and Daan Human joining the Pumas, Barrit and Joubert at the EP Dragons in the Currie Cup, and Classens and Hougaard playing for Boland.

    @shaunswindon(shaunswindon)-4: There was talk in a sunday paper a couple weeks back that Marius Joubert would return to SA at the end of the year.

    Even if it was to return to Boland, it would be a great way to pass on the acquired knowledge to some youngsters.
